Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Because hes a player you dont need! Why spend 10m on him when you have Scholes? Im still sure Smith Isnt technicly good enough for DM, it will be good to see when you play a better standard of oposition, looks like Kleberson's off to Celta Vigo i was certain he'd end up at Benfica!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

True but Ballack would give you a better attacking threat than Smith.
And Bayern are going to be at the Far East when we go there for our tour so maybe a deal will be done then.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

It could be done but a midfield of ballack and Scholes would be a bit lightweight in defence! Unless your going withe the 4-3-3 like last year a trio of:-
Scholes----Ballack
--Keane/Smith----

That will give most midfields in the world a run for there money with Keane and not Smith obviously!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Or you can turn that upside down so you have one attacker in Ballack and 2 defensive players in Keane and Smith.

Ballack move talk
Wednesday 20 July, 2005

Inter target Michael Ballack has moved a step closer to leaving Bayern Munich.

Reports in Italy suggest that the Nerazzurri are keen to sign Ballack when his contract with the Bundesliga champions ends in 2006.

However, they may now look to make their move this summer after recent comments from Bayern director of football Uli Hoeness.

“When people start talking about contracts of more than €10m I just don't understand the world any more,” Hoeness stated.

“Surely nobody believes Ballack earns more than €4m or thereabouts? And we're supposed to be considering more than doubling that?

“We insist on sporting success being tied to financial prudence. The point may come when we have to say no.”

The 28-year-old is considered to be the most influential player in German football.

He has already led Bayern to numerous domestic honours and he was crucial in Germany’s run to the 2002 World Cup Final.

Looks more likely to end up in Italy.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Just rumours. He's just as likely to move to Man Utd.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Not sure if this fits anywhere, but Inter have a history of succesful Germans ranging from Matthaus, Rummenigge to Klinsmann.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

What I mean is that no one has made a bid for him. Theres equal chance that he will stay at Bayern too.

True but as with most of Italian football, Inter have no money.

Michael Ballack is confident he will be at Bayern Munich for the 2005/06 season and has intimated he will sign a new contract.

The Germany national team captain is a target for Internazionale and Manchester United and has just 12 months remaining on his present deal.

Bayern want to secure the midfielder on an extension but talks regarding an extension are progressing slow.

The snail's pace at which the negotiations are proceeding has prompted suggestions that Ballack could quit the Allianz Arena before the start of the new season.

But the 28-year-old has attempted to quell any notion of his departure by affirming his desire to play for the Bundesliga champions this term.

"We're all assuming that I'm going to be playing here at least until 2006," said Ballack. "That's why I'm here.

"Bayern have big aims. We want to defend the league championship as well as the German Cup and go far in the Champions League and I want to be part of that."

Bayern have already refuted rumours they will offer Ballack a €10 million yearly salary to keep him in Bavaria.

Ballack concedes that, with his contract expiring in 2006, he is in a strong position to dictate his future but hinted a new deal with Bayern is his likely course of action.

He added: "I'm in the good situation that I can choose.

"It's a very important decision for the club and for me and that's why it should be carefully considered.

"It could take a few days, a few weeks or perhaps a few months.

"But the possibility that I'll extend is high. I feel good here."

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

We're still gonna get another player so if its not him then its someone else.

I think Owen is still likely cuz Smith has almost officially moved into midfield now, Solskjaer playson the wing at times and Saha might be loaned or sold to Fulham or Everton meaning we need another striker since we only have 2 left.

I'm still wishing for both Owen and Ballack. That would complete our team.

Sorry Inter no money??? Their owner is the owner of Pirelli, and every year they have big name signings. Theyre also on the verge of signing Samuel for 17m! Theyre in the top 10 world richlist.

I read an interview with Franco Carraro, the 65-year-old president of the Italian Football Federation, he seems to think there are problems.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Yeah every year inter make huge signings, ballack wouldn't be an exception. In some ways he'd be an exception to United's trend. They don't tend to get targets from other big champions league teams. Owen and Ballack in one year would certainly solidify Glazers backing, but I can't see it happening. And to be honest, if Saha stays healthy, and Ole is 80% of his former self we don't really need him. And he might prevent Rossi from fully developping, which is something we're all looking forward to.

But bring in the Ballack!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Ultimately its down to the player so we shall see...

Smith's My New Keano
Alex Ferguson believes Alan Smith can become his new Roy Keane. Manchester United boss Fergie has been using Smith in Keane’s midfield holding role during pre-season friendlies. Keane, 34 next month, has a hamstring injury and may retire after the World Cup next summer. Ferguson has tried and failed to groom a number of players to take over from his skipper. Now Smith has stepped forward, or back from being a striker, and could even be a future captain. Ferguson said: “Alan has a lot of potential and he is still only 24. But in time he could become a replacement for Roy. We keep talking about needing to find someone, but you are not going to get another Roy Keane. Alan is a different type of character, but it’s something we are looking at.” Smith himself is quite happy to take on a midfield role, having done so at times with Leeds. He said: “I’ve proved I can play in both positions. I’ve shown that whoever I play for, whether it’s England, Leeds or Manchester United.” Smith would be a popular choice as captain with the United fans, who have taken to him since his controversial switch from Elland Road. His all-action style immediately won them over.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

I'm still dubious about Smith. It would be great if it was true, but he wasn't brought up and trained as a midfielder.

Team flies to Asia today, I'm looking forward to seeing some of the Asian tour, well highlights anyway. I wonder if theres anyway to see it online..

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

But like Sir Alex said, he's still young so he has a lot of time to develop new skills.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

As for me,between all the other midfielders Sir Alex tried to play in place of Keano...Smith is the closest to the captain in terms of pride, drive, determination and passion. With the right mentality, which Smith has in abundance, skills can come later.Imagine how devastating he can be soon,he has a great first touch, has a great spring, heads superbly, passes well and more importantly, has an eye for goals.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Smith passes well phrase? thats one of his worst aspects of the game!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

I have to agree with you. Smith's passing isnt the greatest but its just one of the things he's gonna have to work on.
But like Phrase said, he has the pride, drive, determination and passion which is a lot harder to learn than the ability to pass or defend. And he's still young so IMO, he could become our future captain in about 3/4 years time.

And Ballack has come out and said he's staying at Bayern so it looks like we're gonna have to go elsewhere.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

YAY!!! Man Utd arrive at HKG Tomorrow!!! just can't wait to see them!!! i hope that i can see them like i saw Juve stars last month!!!

newayz...funny how Smith is now playing in the DMF role and is accepting it and playing hard as VDS says...

Mr Jamie Mack....have u seen our last two friendlies?? In the combined 90 minutes Alan Smith played as a DMF,I clearly cant remember him giving away a pass.He dosent go big, spreading 70 yard passes ala Becks or Gerrard but his short passes are great, like all DMFs should be doing...worst aspects of his game? c'mon now, maybe he did a lot of homework during the summer break? Looks like he did to me...next time analyse the game, dont just watch it.And yes,we are cool, mate.Cheers~

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Who knows. Maybe in the future, we might see him playing for England in a 4-3-3 just behind Lampard and Gerrard.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

yeah now that theres no hope for Ballack, I wonder if that's that for transfers. If so we should be able to sign a seriously expensive target next year, having only spent about, what 8 this off season (park/VDS/foster)?

It'll be nice to see Smith back in the starting XI, and he has a great mentor in Keano, so who knows, maybe it'll work out! I'll ahve to give it a try in WE8LE, that'll be the true judge.

Wish i could get bittorrent working so I could dwld the second half against petersborough. Noone has any other ideas do they? Its not on kazaa i don't think. Stupid corporate firewalls.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

LOL. Its only worth watching the second half of that match. Rossi, Ruud and Ronaldo were on fire.

And I still dont think thats the end of our spending cuz as far as we know, Ballack isnt the player that we're after. And the club have said that we're gonna have one more signing which hasnt been done. So if its not Ballack, its not the end of the world.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Smith shouldnt give a pass away against the standard of opp you were playing! Only time will tell! How do you think Fergie would work it Keane in for the big games and Smith in against lesser oposition?

If your going to get owen i think the time is nigh! Madrid have supposed to have agreed a fee for Robinho! Guillem Balague from Sky says Owens the one making the moves!? Anyone know why Ronaldo hasnt travelled out to Asia?

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

With Robinho going to Real, the Owen thing could become a hot topic again
