Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

There is a fairly big age difference so its almost unfair for compare anyway.
The thing about Vieira was a joke. (I need to use more smilies)
But if we did a trade, I'm sure Arsenal would be a much better team with Keane playing for them compared to Man Utd with Vieira.
Regardless of his age, ability or stats, Keano is still very important.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

i think these days his influence is more important than his actual playing skills for you lot and thats why he is so important to replace!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

Yeah. Thats what I mean.
Its a bit like Cantona too. We know he had great ability but the way he influenced the then younger players like Beckham, Butt, Giggs, Scholes, etc was very important. I remember hearing a story from Giggs on MUTV where after every training session, everyone would leave but Cantona would continue to practice and all the younger lads like Giggs and Scholes would just watch him and be amazed with his dedication. This then spread through the entire team and got them to where they are today.

Keane is a bit like that too. People on MUTV were saying that managers can try their best for hours to motivate players but what Keano did when standing up for Gary in the Highbury tunnel is probably the best motivational team talk anyone can ever give. Theres nothing better than knowing that your captain is ready to battle with you no matter how tough the challenge may seem.
Keane plays a big part in the way our players develop and also the type attitude all our players go into a game with.

You can buy all the players in the world but you cant buy what Keano and Cantona gave us which is why its so hard to replace them.

vieira is a good player but even though keano is older i'd still take keano, im sure his passing stats are amongst the best for the season...

also look at what keano has done for the team while he's been with us, all the trophies he's led us to, that night in Turin alone is greater than anything Vieira has done for the arse bandits....

plus you dont get "he's off to madrid" rumours every season with keano, he's loyal to us.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

Yeah. Turin was a night to remember. Keano turned that match around after his first goal. Sadly he got a yellow card which stopped him from playing in Barcelona.

Our team owe him a European Cup final.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

Strong links coming out of the club with a move for Owen, even though I had got info on him going to arsenal, Fergie is apparently strong on the idea..

But we've got a player with great potential in Rossi who will feature more next year..

Wilf McGuiness on Rossi:

"I watched Rossi score a hat-trick in the Reserves' play-off win over Charlton: absolute class. He’s got a magic wand of a left foot, and he can use his right to deadly effect as well. He’s developing well. But there is no need to get too carried away. You have to put it into perspective. There’s a young lad in the reserve team playing lovely football. That’s the stage he is at in his career and he has to be allowed to develop. The Premiership is a very big jump. However, if he keeps playing well at reserve level, that gets noted by the manager and his staff and they will pick the right time for him to make that jump.

"We’re all hoping he gets the opportunities next season. I’m sure he will because people think very highly of him at the club. And there are other players coming through. It’s not all about Rossi. David Jones has looked a quality player as captain for the Reserves, while Lee Martin has come on a lot this season and Pique has started to shine. The reserves have been wonderful this season. It’s a marvellous achievement to win four trophies. Congratulations must go to Ricky Sbragia and Brian McClair for the job they have done. More so because we’re not talking about a team of first-team squad players. The focus has been on young players coming through."

So why on earth would we want to buy Owen with Rossi coming through? We need a midfielder!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

On MUTV, they interview Sir Alex after every game in the tunnel and they asked him after the Arsenal game, "So what do you think United need to do to overcome this goal scoring problem?"
And Sir Alex replied "We need a new striker." And then laughed.

Not sure what we should make of it. Do you think he's serious?

i've heard that he's serious about getting Owen, but like I said we need to get the midfield covered and also its gonna mean one or two strikers leaving and we dont wanna lose Smithy!

Even though the man is clearly demented I do like this quote

"I think I should have been the centre-forward this season. Or maybe we should bring back Denis Law?!"

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

Just read that a bunch of clubs are after Scott Parker from Chelsea, could be worth a bid....

Apparently Everton are favourites cause they can guarantee first team football and hopefully champions league.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

shit, next time i'll have the job done proper...

"David (Bellion) has had an operation (on a fractured fibula) and the Club will be assessing his injury at the start of the new season."

sos folks we are working on getting rid of this fella, i'll keep you posted...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

I doubt that Bellion will leave. Fergie still thinks he can become a better player which is why he plays regular reserve team football. I could see him loaned to another team but not sold.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

Well if anyones leaving, it aint Ruud:

Thanks to Red News...

The press have picked up on a few comments from his interview with the Dutch magazine, but RN reader Jan, exclusively for Red News translates the most interesting part which hasn't been picked up yet

Van Nistelrooy, a classic lover of the game, never played on the legendary pitch of Wembley. In Wales, the striker already thinks about next season.

Well, maybe next season when the cup final is staged as the opening game for the new Wembley.

"Then we have to show something again because to be honest, for two seasons our performances are very disappointing. Ok by winning the FA cup you make up a few things, but United have to win more than just the cup."

"Regularly the tabloids wrote that I didn't like it anymore at United and even that United wanted to get rid of me. Absolute rubbish. I love to play here and will stay here until my contract ends in 2008. For next season we have to close the gap with Chelsea, that's the obligation we have to our fans."

"If you see how much they care for the club and how deep their love is, that's incredible. That's what you noticed again with Glazer, the emotions! This is a very big issue for them."

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

If anyone has ever heard Fergie talking about Ruud you'd know he's absolutely crazy about him.
This season when he was out he kept saying how there were chances that Ruud would not miss, and that United needed Ruud.
I hope Ruud will be able to have an injury free season next time.

Personally, I think these Owen stories are just rumors.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

I personally like the idea of having Ruud, Rooney, Saha and Owen as strikers and Smith in midfield.
Rooney sort of plays on the wing with a free role so we'd only really have 3 out and out strikers.

Heres a stat for ya. Did you know that we dropped 18 points this season to teams in the lower half of the table?
I know we have problems in midfield and are in need of a new keeper but the real issue is that we cant convert out chances into goals. Now lets imagine for a second that we were able to take our chances more often. With the amount of chances that we do get per game, we'd be averaging almost 3 goals per game. And with a defensive record like ours, we'd hardly lose a game.
If theres anyone that can make that happen then its someone like Owen.
Just look at Arsenal. Their defensive record is pretty bad but the amount of goals they score makes up for it.

I'm telling you. Owen would be really useful. Plus we probably would have to pay much cuz Real Madrid only paid about £8million for him so we souldnt have to pay any more than that. And Owen IMHO is worth more than £8million.

i cant see how anyone could think owen wouldnt be useful for us, he's a natural goalscorer, him and Rooney, feck me that would cause some probs for defenders...

FYI Owen has a £10mill buy-out clause..

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

Somehow I don't think that Owen would quite do it for us.
While Owen has a high goal to minute ratio in la Liga, I don't think his goals were all that impressive. I'd rather wait til the January transfer window to see if we really need him.

You talking about me? I said I'd like Owen to join.
Imagine Ruud and Owen with Rooney playing is Scholes' position.

Ruud's goals dont look that impressive either. Its winning the game that counts.

he's scored some beauties!!

they may not all be rooney-like but he finishes moves of or scores in games when there are few chances...

but your right its winning that matters!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

That may be true, but what I meant was that there's no real special skill in most his goals. While Ruud's goals don't look that pretty, he's very skilled at positioning and finishing, he's plain leathal in the box.
I'm still not completely sold on Owen regaining his world-class striker status, I'd like to see him play more games before I decide. But I can understand why you think he'd make a good signing.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

Examples of how he's one of the greatest finishers alive when he's 100% fit.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

Owen is small, quick and good at losing his marker. And his finishing isnt that bad either. His goal against Portugal was nice.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

When will we get to see previews for the new away kit, anyone know ?

Also did anyone see the news last night, ITV tracked down Glazer and one of his sons and tried to get a word about the take over but they both just said something like "Where here for the NFL" (they had a meeting in the U.S about NFL)

I wish one of them would open their mouths soon to say whats going on

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

Yeah i saw a interview on sky today Glazer was at some kind of NFL thing explaing about the Casino being buit at OT i dont think your allowed to do that in the NFL, anyhow the Sky reporter asked if he had a few words for the Britsh people? and one of his guys said your talking about the wrong type of Football then one guy took him back inside saying its not the time to talk! Shamefull!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

Thats strange. I heard Man Utd were developing the Casino. Not Glazer.
The Casino is supposed to be a big franchise in the US and we're opening one next to Old Trafford.

tons of clubs have been looking at the possiblity of opening Casinos, newcastle, city and united are just among the few, its nothing to do with glazer....

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Rio to Barca??

The NFL rules say your not allowed any ownership interest in a casino and prevents partnerships with gambling establishments. and as he is Man Utd now so its breaking the NFL rules, I believe it was the Shareholder united guys who told the NFL, i thought they would of give up by now!:)
