Manchester United Thread

Di Maria was a disaster and was a huge loss financially . He was great the year before and was great over the summer tourney . Players with the right ingredients can amplify a squad . I`ll take Canvani or Benzema for Arsenal. I dont think Theo will get that chance to lead the line in this life or the next. MUFC can`t depend on Rooney to lead the line is my point.

Childish bragging rights aside, that's a pretty fair indictment of LVG's ability to get our attack working.

I guess LVG deserves some forgiveness - no one could have predicted how poor Rooney would have been - but at the same time it's so obvious Mata doesn't work out wide.

Obviously I've got nothing on LVG in terms of football tactics, but for the life of me I can't see why we don't pull Mata into the middle, and stick to actual pacey players out wide. That would in theory force teams to commit more defenders to the flanks, and actually give Rooney some room in the middle.

At present Rooney is typically surrounded by at least 3 central defenders, because no one else is supporting him in the box, and our number 10 tends to be Memphis/Januzaj who have no idea how to play that position centrally.

To successfully play a one-striker system you need a striker who is powerful and able to create chances alone, and goals from central midfield. At present we have a striker than can't run and a midfield who can't make it past the centre circle.

Very good post. Completely agree.

ST solved : Felliani

Haha. I think Fellaini is a sound if all else fails option especially against vertically challenged opponents. Also he might actually be less foul prone in a more forward position as the refs have his number when defending in the middle.

It sounds all very logical now though now that LVG more or less said that qualification for the CL will be a deciding factor in whether we bring in anyone else. If it truly is a big name like has been hinted at numerous times then it only stands to reason that those types of players first want to ensure we even are in the CL group stage to begin with rather than it being a maybe.

I want to see Ibra in Red and up top. He'll light this fecking league up if he's healthy and motivated

so Fellaini is the new striker

Well, LVG has surprised us all. Sigh.

Strange summer. All 4 of our signings look to be excellent choices for various reasons, so we should be really happy.

But I can't help but feel the decline of Rooney is going to ruin us this season. We'll see I guess.

The new 'hope' is that if we qualify for the CL this evening, that'l release the funds to make our other attacking purchase, whoever that might be.

Heard Dirk Kuyt might be available.

Not a chance Beach,Kuyt has returned to the club of his dreams: Feyenoord.

But i guess you were merely being sarcastic?

I think you guys are too negative towards Fellaini. He served you well last season, and i would kill for a player like Fellaini at Spurs...

Yeah, not serious about good ole Dirk.

Fellaini is useful, but I just don't think you get a top 5 European team with him as a plan A, starting lineup type. And that should be our goal, wasn't long ago we were comfortably in there.

He's great as a backup or a plan B mind, and we'll benefit from having him back.

I honestly don't see any English club being among the top 5 in Europe.
The only club that was ever in end (this century) was United, but i have a feeling that you lost contact (that is vertain) and never gonna recover again.

Clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern are too far away...(if you are the best of the rest you are still top 5 of course, but imo there is gonna be a gap between those 4 and the rest, PSG is getting nearer the 3 other clubs but they stil are a distant fourth).

Every now and then there will be a club like Juventus last season, but those 4 will Always compete...
Chelsea and City have the money, but they are not able to bridge the gap...every single Chelsea (longer period) or City (more recently) lacks something to compete as a European super power...

Think that's just viewing the world through today's lens to be honest.

Not so long ago we had 2 years of 3/4 CL semi finalists being EPL clubs. United were in 3 CL finals in just 4 seasons, and despite losing two of them would have to have been considered to be 1 of the 2 best teams in the world.

Barca and Real have done an amazing job of keeping the duopoly on talent going in Spain, but Messi and Ronaldo only have a couple years left and both teams are pretty 'peak' right now. With the money moving to the EPL, I'm not sure what will happen with their dominance in another 2/3 seasons.

Germany is a bit different because Bayern are just able to hoover up anyone remotely good playing in that league - typically from their closest rivals - and so should always be the top team there. Their pedigree has more or less been constant.

And PSG is just a drop in the pan. They're excellent right now, but that level of spending won't happen again there, and most of their players are at peak age now. Will look very different when they have to try and replace Silva, Ibra etc.

Sadly money talks, and the EPL is where the money is going to be for the next 5 seasons at least. So I'd expect that to tell on the pitch.

That makes sense, but on the other hand has the train not left the station?
At the beginning of the EPL both Liverpool and Spurs had a couple of very mediocre seasons and they never were able to catchup with the big four.

Spurs is not a gigantic club, but Liverpool are and to be honest i can't see them breaking in the top 4. They could have one or two outstanding seasons, but that will not be enough.

Spurs is more and more loosing ground...

Of the English clubs the only one that is capable to win the CL more than a once off seems to be Man United, but i'm not sure if that is still the case.

Man City (never ever), Arsenal (very unlikely) and Chelsea (once in a while but not able to compete every season) will imo never bridge the gap with Bayern, Real and Barcelona. I don't think Real and Barcelona will be lesser clubs without Messi and Ronaldo. For some strange reason playing for those clubs seems to be every player's dream (ask Hazard what the club of his dreams is and he will say Real Madrid). on top of that they have plenty of money avalaible (somehow).

Plz, the days of an EPL club winning CL is over. Maybe the next generation .... EPL with all their cash spreading only cripples the chances of winning the prestige trophy. It's like a generation living on the Dole and now gets added bonuses .Besides the matches are getting harder towards the 1st half its only through injury and winter shitty pitches amplifies the old common hammy injury . When clubs (squads) get jaded and the better squads are able to extend their winning streak. By then most are out of the CL lol.

Disagree bout English sides not being able to win the CL . think City will inevitably win the Champions League in the next decade, Chelsea will too probably and United have a history and tradition which means we'lll always be competitive in it.

Next decade ... You will have 2 kids and might be living abroad running your own business. 10 years is a long time, Messi n Ronaldo retired, MCity might not be the rich club. Newcastle maybe the new club lol.

Ajax and Benfica have an even bagger history and tradition, so you see them winning CL titles too? IMHO that is not a reason to win CL titles.

I hope English clubs can win CL titles, because the EPL is my favourite league, but i honestly can't see it happening the next feb years. Of course i've fouten been wrong in predictions such as this one.

Rooney scored 3 goals against a very mediocre and very weakened team. Club Brugge missed 3 of their usual defenders and their defensive midfielder (you might know Timmy Simons, tik, since he played in Holland). On top of that they missed their 3 most important attacking players and Preudhomme (the manager) choose to play without his best playmaker.

I think Preudhomme realised immediately that this weakened team didn't stand the slightest chance against Man United.

As a conseqquence of this all, i wouldt conclude too much about a Rooney resurrection against EPL teams...Van Gaal might make the same conclusion...

Was impressed with Schweinsteiger. Man Utd was so much better with him on the pitch.

Even though the opposition was mediocre, the goals were good. Rooney might've got more confidence with this now so should help. I'd rather keep Rooney there and buy a solid CB and a backup striker. I don't see anyone talking about Berahino btw, what do you guys think of him? I thought he looked hungry and always looked to score, and was good on the ball too. Helps that he's young as well.
