Manchester United Thread

I think defensively and midfield wise we look really good and to be honest that's the hardest part to nail, you can actually kind of just throw money at top attacking talent to get the forward line up to scratch.

Rooney

Memphis kind of highlighting what we already knew, he's a talent but hes most certainly a work in progress and not someone whose ready to lead the attack for us or a top european team just yet but is by default in that position at the minute, I think our attack is probably 5th best in the league at best to be honest, its a massive step down from the rest of the side.

Again we shouldn't have sold Van Persie.

We just need to always remember that by human nature, some or many players relocating to other countries need time to settle. Language, culture, food, family and friends all make a difference.

Hey bud. Is Muller coming in or not? Everyone in my Manchester club seems convinced that he is. Most of them are pub drunks that follow gossip pages so I think I'll only believe it when I see him in a kit

In a short answer, I'd say no.

Bayern fans are already pretty annoyed with losing Schweinsteiger and he's a somewhat on the decline, however a symbol of Bayern and a club legend, Muller is one of the best in the world and similar to Bastian a club icon, Pep is more likely to be sacked before Muller is sold.

Yes but apparently Muller wants out himself.
I know that in Germany it is absolutely not done to put pressure for a transfer as a player on a club (Sterling).

But if he would come,Boy, he would be some catch. To me he is the fourth best player on the planet, right after Messi, Ronaldo and Suarez. And he is perhaps the best big match player in the world. He is so underrated.

If he comes, United are my favourites to win the title...don't forget that it was Van Gaal who unearthed him.

Something different.
What do the United fans think will happen with Januzaj? Will LVG play him more frequently? And if not will he be loaned to another club. It's pretty useless to have him and not using him, that is loosing capital as a club...

Maybe Muller would want to connect with Van Gaal again. Add Schweinsteiger to the mix and hopefully he's more encouraged. Unsure if Pep has any influence on Muller wanting to leave too. Wish I knew more of behind the scene happenings.

I LOVE Muller. What a player. Workrate, intelligence, ability...man.

But that's a pipe dream. No way Bayern lose two of their German stars in one summer. Move along.

Re: Adnan - I think he'll stay and get a lot more games if we don't get a striker. LVG seems to put him no3 in the 2 spots for Memphis/Rooney up front. That's going to mean lots of minutes.

Unless we buy Pedro and a striker, then he's got to go on loan.

Strange that nobody is talking here about tonight's match against Club Brugge.
Is that because you guys are convinced that it will be a Wall in the park?

Well, to be fair, it should be a piece of cake. Normale spoken Begian teams haven got the slightest chance against EPL clubs, let alone a club like Man Utd. To make things worse currently Brugge have 7 first team players who are injured, and 5 amongst them are absolutely key players (both CB's, refaelov, Izquerdo and Geddoz).

On top of that they will play most certainly with Tom Desutter upfront who will go to Bursaspor next week (transfer almost done).

Nevertheless, for the people who are able to see the match, watch out for Hans Vanaken. He is the best player in the Belgian competition and reminds me of Kevin De Bruyne. Very intelligent player.

Hey, Gerd. It's just that the thread hasn't been very active lately.

I'm part of another forum about United and believe me, we are very excited to be playing an European fixture again! Belgian football has produced quality players in the last years, so you can never underestimate a Belgian club. :)

I'm just hopeful we manage to qualify for the group stage while also playing some good football. I didn't like the way we played against Spurs and Villa...

I'm so excited for a CL evening! Can't wait, though am struggling to find it on tv here which would be a shame.

Think Bastian should get his first start, have to imagine Carrick will have a rest. Unfortunately would imagine that Valencia will come in at RB, but I doubt we'll see many youngsters.

Qualifying is pretty much the single most important thing LVG needs to do in the next 6 months, so I'm sure he'll put a very serious team out.

Stacked in CM but do Utd have strength in depth at CB+Attack to deal with 4 competitions? Doesn't look like it to me.
Smalling is playing quite well but only a matter of time before he gets injured, and Rooney looks ready to retire atm

I feel like Rooney has already retired. My Benteke v Rooney bet is looking good already!

Would love to give Hernandez a chance tonight. Stick 3 of Herrera, Depay and Mata behind him. Movement, pace! Madness.

And you're right on Smalling, always like this. Looks good, twists ankle, out for 5 months. Sigh.

We have real issues. GK, CB and ST are not positions you can really get away with.

Seems pretty obvious to me, all Brugge have to do is keep chipping it over Blind and they can get another away goal or 2. And just keep Depay on his left foot

Well, at last we managed to win by playing some lovely football!
We could have won with a bigger difference if we pushed them more, but the goal by Fellaini happened, so I'm ok with that. :D

Memphis is the real deal it seems! Such a shame he couldn't bury the chance after that awesome flick by Rooney.

God, Michael Owen. Sigh.

We were pretty good in fairness, especially the second half before the sending off. People make out like it's easy playing in Europe, but aside from botching a backpass, I don't think Romero touched the ball. We stifled and dominated in a way that a Mourinho or Benitez would be praised, but for us isn't good enough.

We had something like a 10 minute spell where the ball didn't leave their half :)

Also looked SO much better with Hernandez on instead of Janujaz. Who'd of thought Hernandez might look better as a 9 than Janujaz. Oh yeah, everyone thinks that. Except Louis.

Also with Pedro collapsing that puts our net spend this summer at 'just' 20m GBP. Wonder if the Glazers are tightening things up again, despite the 'narrative'. If we get any pennies for Valdes, could be down around 15m by the end of the window. Then if we sell big Dave, could even be in the black...

Please Ryan, it's JANUZAJ as in Yanuz-eye. Been bugging me for more than a year how you type it! :D

The problem is not Januzaj though. It's Rooney - and Hernandez played as a 9, as you said, with Rooney behind him. Before that it was Rooney up top with Januzaj at 10.

I personally think it's costing the team that Rooney is captain and thus has privileges - he's been shit the whole last season, and he's been abysmal this one. Nobody was putting any pressure on him last night, that's why his touch looked a bit better. But IMO he's done at the highest level. If we're aiming to win things, Rooney shouldn't be a starter. In any position.

If he keeps being a starter for us even if he's shite, then we're the new Liverpool (see Gerrard in last 3 seasons).

Oh, and we're a laughing stock on the market. Pedro should have been wrapped up weeks ago at that price. But instead we were screwing around and chasing Muller, who was never going to leave Bayern this summer...

its ridiculous, another Spaniard fail after months and weeks of negotiating.

Thiago - fail
Fabregsa - fail
Ramos
Pedro - fail

MUFC doesnt back down from a few quids. So something is wrong I wish it was black/white to see it

@Spektram - sorry! Brain is stuck on Januzaj's name. No idea why. Will make more effort, normally rather good at this English malarkey.

Totally agree on Rooney. He's woeful at present. There are just two mitigating factors:

1. There's no one better we can get
2. Rooney does this. Looks utterly crap for 5 matches, then scores in 8 straight.

Problem is that his touch, shooting and overall hold up play has been poor for like 4 seasons now. Can't see that changing. He might get on the end of some chances soon, but the Rooney of old is gone. He's been at the top for more than 10 years, and very few players manage to do that.

I'm on the fence with who to blame though. Ed and LVG have done a proper gutting job as I keep harping on about. It's almost an entirely new squad, so some stability is required, and I can see backing Rooney when making that decision, particularly a year ago. But if we persist with him every match til January at the earliest, we're going to win nothing.

I've always been told that LVG needs a striker who is very much a 'team player' - one who can lead the line, hold the ball and leverage the movement around him. At the moment Rooney couldn't trap a bag of sand, much less bring it down and pass the ball. To be honest I'd be tempted (shudder) to stick Fellaini up top if we keep looking this poor.

Januzaj?
Think you'll find it's...

Kind of unrelated q, but does anyone understand why we're playing early on Saturday?

I think we're the only EPL club playing a midweek match, and then we're chosen to play first?

Weird.

2 early kick offs and a Friday night so far. Feels weird.
