Manchester United Thread

The simple fact is, City and Chelsea bought their league titles in recent times.

Because if they didn't do that, the usual top 4 in PL would persist. It took large sums of money to be injected to enable two clubs to climb their way to the top and break the top 4 glass ceiling. It will be a monumental task if Soton finishes in Top 4 this season.

SAF won titles year after year with a quite an above or average squad. Without Chelsea and City, PL won't be as exciting as it is. United has also spent a lot of money this season to return to top 4.

It's a different league now than before. The "Rich" clubs only made the money ball roll faster and crazier. In the history of all big clubs, there were people who threw in money for the club to succeed. And once the club has started to succeed, money came in and they threw more money to buy more success. Every single success in the past has come from investments. Chelsea, PSG and City are just modern types of investment and they shortened the usual 10 year process into 2 or 3 short summers. All "traditional" big clubs were always the ones to break transfer records in the past, so money is always thrown in. It's just a matter of timespan.

I have said before, I LIKE Chelsea and City challenging now, its why the Prem League is the most interesting. La Liga is boring, just same 2 teams (apart from last season - that wont happen again for 50 years), Real Madrid and Barca hoovering up all the good talent, playing their own little league - BORING.

Then we have Bundesliga - ONE team. Bayern are too big and powerful for anyone else to get close now. Dortmund WERE challengers but Bayern just buy all their best players. BORING!

French league is very weak but has decent young talent playing there. I am glad Lyon are doing well, I like them.

Dutch league is average but very interesting.

Serie A is nowhere near the quality it was in the 90s. Corruption, scandal and debt has effected the league and also half empty stadiums don't help the clubs - I think only Juventus have a modern and full stadium every match? Serie A clubs will struggle to keep best players who will look to move to Spain, Germany or England.

MLS is just awful. A retirement home for has beens like Robbie Keane.

Anyway, I didnt know your Alex Ferguson supported City now?!

Completely agree.

About Southampton: it is fantastic that a club with a good youth academy is up there. I wonder how much of the players will be there in a couple of seasons.

Clubs like Southampton and Swansea deserve all the praise for their philosophy.

Must say that i'm also surprised by West Han United this season. Even Caroll is scoring wonder goals.

Sorry to hijack this thread.
There is a very strong rumour in the Belgian press that Kevin De Bruyne is Van Gaal's main transfer target at the moment.

I'm well aware that i'm not objective, because this guy is absolutely my favourite player, but he has it all.

People who really follow Belgian football that De Bruyne is by far our biggest talent. Forget Hazard or Kompany, De Bruyne is the real thing.

Personally i would like to see De Bruyne a couple of seasons more at Wolfsburg, but he deserves a very big team like Man United. Give him a few :months to settle and you would have the best midfielder of the EPL.

To give you an idea what other football players thin about him: just before new year there was a poll among German football players (all the Bundesliga players). Robben was voted best player and De Bruyne second best. De Bruyne was voted the best midfielder of the Bundesliga...

You are right, he is such a good player. I really hope Man U dont get him.

It's also in a few UK newspapers today as well, saying he is linked with them.

De Bruyne made a good impression in the World Cup too. That match against the USA... the world would end and he'd still be running!

I think Chelsea will regret letting him go some day very soon.

Can he player in central midfield? I really rate De Bruyne too and he's been great at Wolfsburg, but the last thing we need is another number 10!!!

He can play number 10, DMF, CMF, SMF and winger.

IMO he is better than the numbers 10 you have...still can't understand why Mourinho never played him.
He played the first match against Hull, was man of the match and then one half against Man Utd and that was it...

Most Chelsea fans will not complain because they have Fabregas, but i don't understand that Hazard is seen as one of the 20 best players in the world and De Bruyne isn't even in FourFourTwo's top 100...(he isn't in the Guardian's top 100 either).

When he played for Werder Bremen he was a DMF and at the end of the season he was in the best 11 of the Bundesliga, not Schweinsteiger but De Bruyne and before Werder he never played at that position...

His flexibility is something Van Gaal would love I'm sure. Wonder if he'd be willing to come back to England though, after clearly being very good and comfortable in Germany.

Would love to see him in an United shirt, but I have doubts that Woodward will be able to get him.

Why do Utd fans say this still? He brought in Mata, Di Maria and Falcao - who could see that coming?

I would LOVE Woodward at Arsenal instead of our clueless board.

There is a City fan in Uni with me who is adament that there are more City fans in Manchester. I showed him this today, he is very quiet now!

You get lots of Chinese people at the Emirates, Anfield and Old Trafford. But I dont care, they have a right to support Arsenal or Liverpool just like we all do.

They spend money on the club, they can support who they want.

About the De Bruyne rumours. Now Liverpool has also shown an intrest in him. De Bruyne's mother is England and since he was a kid the family followed English football. The De Bruyne family are Liverpool fans...

To be honest, i think most of these stories are bullshit. There is a slight cahnce that De Bruyne will leave Wolfsburg if they can buy or loan Schurrle and if they find aclub that is prepared to give at least 40 million euro's to buy him...

For De Bruyne's carreer it would be better if he stayed a couple of seasons at Wolfsburg.

You must believe that there are more Villa fans in Dublin than there are in Birmingham if you think that stat matches reality

he would be ideal Gerrard replacement...but it won´t happend sadly.

I can't bear another upset. Already had two today (Federer in Australian Open and Japan in Asian Cup)...another one would be way too much to handle....

We're still quite slow in the play. By the time the players actually set up for attack, the cambridge players would already be back in numbers

People often think football is 'easier' than it is.

Cambridge have been organised, played smartly (lots of falling down for such 'tough' league 2 fellas) and can easily run around with us for 45 minutes.

It's really hard to score against that. For any team, with any talent. There's no space, and the pitch is pretty bobbly which stops short passing/triangles.

I still expect United to win in the end, but it's just stupid to think we should be 5 goals up just because of reputation.

Also Chris Foy is hilarious. He's clearly doing his utmost to keep this tight. Looks to be holding our players to a higher standard of what it means to be fouled.

well, I don't expect us to be 5 goals up, just a few more shots on target and testing their keeper more. OR maybe 1 goal in front if taht's too much..haha...

But yes, I do agree that Cambridge is very smart in the way that they are playing and its harder to scout lower teams and the football played is very different...

And there we go, bus parked, result achieved.

To be fair to the United players, it's just really difficult to do much better than that. In the second half we basically had 80% possession, all of the territorial advantage but on that surface, in that wind, what can you do?

There was a point when Valencia missed a simple pass, looked awful in real time. You see the replay, and a ball along the ground literally bounced 2 feet up right before it reached him off a divot. Not sure anyone in the world can play sikly football in that.

We created chances, Van Persie had the worst miss and we did look a different league apart in the second half. But sometimes you need some luck, and had none.

It'll be very, very different situation at Old Trafford.
