Manchester United Thread

Bony has been brilliant. Always been an admirer. Strong and intelligent player. That intelligence is exactly the reason for the Swansea s two goals

First ever home defeat to Swansea in the league
First league opener Utd have lost in 42 years

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss :WORSHIP:

Surely lvg now analyzed his players enough to bring in some fresh faces. Swansea was very solid tho. Looked like a proper PL team. United looked better than last season at times at least. Slowly..

Only decision that baffled me was why we took off Herrera for Fellaini, as soon as that happened all our pre-season football went out the window.

LVG is the right man, it's now time to unfortunately scrutinize Woodward's position, just has failed to deliver.

I thought Herrera was bulied around a lot and not really in the game. Fellaini only made sense in that we seemed to be missing some height in the box.

1st game ... No worries. You have to wait after (10) matches at least. I think Mata was exposed by forgetting to track back a bit.

When will you accept that sir Alex left this team in shambles. Bad signings evey where. How in the world Ashley young is still on united is beyond me, one in a long line of terrible signings.

I've been saying that for 3 years before he retired. I think this is about 75% SAF's fault, 20% Woodward's fault and 5% LVG/Moyes.

SAF wore the squad into the ground, did no long term planning and stubbornly refused to reinforce the team. Just look at our 'peers' in the last 5 seasons. This isn't entirely scientific, but it's at least an indicator.

Since 10/11:
Chelsea - 44 Players in - 474m Gross
City - 31 Players in - 440m Gross
LFC - 42 Players in - 323m Gross
United - 22 Players in - 267m Gross
Arsenal - 26 Players in - 229m Gross

Obviously that didn't include transfers out and what not, that's just pure gross players coming into the club (at all levels).

I'm not saying that throwing in new players is the only answer, but those numbers are stark. And Fergie oversaw most of that. Whether it was his ego or hte large bonus checks he was getting from the Glazers he (and Wenger to an extent) had to /chose to ignore the fact that massive spending is going to win the league 9 times out of 10.

Just watch this season. It's going to be a two horse race. And it'll be the two most heavily invested horses.

If United really want to be the big boys in world football that they claim, they need to spend. It sucks, it's sad, but it's no longer the case that you can win anyhting with kids. The two best squads in the premier league basically don't have a single academy kid between them playing any major part, John Terry aside.

That's not even considering Madrid, Barca and Bayern - who have all outspent even the big PL clubs.

Utd's outgoings have been the fewest as well tho and Net spend reflects this. CFC 290m, MCFC 270m, MUFC 220m, LFC 115m, AFC 75m

Let's face it, your squad is significantly stronger any way you measure it. We had to play Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard in our league opener, not to mention Ashley Young as a LB. You guys have literally bought 2 international 'stars' for every single position, as per the two teams in your thread.

If United want to compete with City, they need to build a squad similar to City. If United are unable to spend like City, then that simply won't happen, and we shouldn't expect United to compete at that level.

That's where I am these days. We'll challenge for 4th, because that's where the investment is. You get what you spend, now that Ferguson isn't around. He was a freak, who consistently in the last decade took under-invested teams above the much wealthier clubs.

He remains the only manager to beat Chelsea/City to a league title since the billionaires rocked up. He might remain the only one for a long time.
