Manchester United Thread

mutd are missing only 3 players? Janzu , RVP n Fellani... RM/City have been playing mostly B-team. Liverpool have 99.9% playing...Arsenal are the worse Cteam/Bteam mixed w/ Ateam...most of starting XI wont play at the start of the season -Community shield.

Yh agree preseason is getting the legs n conditioning..mutd are at cross roads so the players have to perform . They're taking preseason serious for a reason. Hence the talk of fear factor!!

We've played Johnstone, Amos, Blackett (in every match), James, Lingard, W. Keane, M. Keane and Ashley Young at full back. In the second of every match we've played Nani as a lone striker.

But agree that Van Gaal is definitely trying.

well he is experimenting, he has a different style to SAf :)) So how many players are MUTD missing? this 3-5-2 , 3-6-1 are just seeing what the players can adapt too. I see Evan,Jones ,Rooney,Shaw,Valencia,Mata,Herrera,Welbeck all mixed from top-middle n back. Im not provoking...just stating 'facts'

Look, I think Mutd will get into Europe easily this season...Hell even could win (injuries fan fare)Im happy to see Mutd fans excited they can almost possibly could understand what Arsenal fans been feeling ..almost

Strong rumour in Belgian press about Fellaini.

Benitez wants Fellaini at Napoli. Napoli can't afford the amount of money Man Utd ask.
So Napoli want to let go Dries Mertens to Man Utd and pay money for Fellaini.

I wouldn't hesitate, imo Mertens is better than Hazard.
He was fabulous in Napoli, i'm baffled that Benitez wants to let him go...

Was also good at World Cup but I don't think he's outstanding by any stretch. Isn't a player good enough to change the 3-5-2 into a 4-3-3 IMO.

Seems a bit inconsistent, but then we have Nani...so...

So sad about Nani. Could have been one of the best in the world in his position, but just doesn't have the mentality. In terms of being a true winger, his ability to bring the ball into his control, beat his marker and whip in a cross was phenomenal..but only for 2 years. Strange to lose that. Wouldn't have traded him for almost anyone in that role back in 2011.

He looks in great shape too, so it's not that. Just can't make good decisions anymore.

What is going to be the opinion here if Van Gaal keeps the 5-3-2 and plays like that during the season ? Is that a formation for a club like Manchester United ?

Sooooo, it's August now. League starts in 2 weeks. And we're looking, erm, a bit light in a few areas. Can't tell if I'm worried because so much of what LVG has said and done has been an improvement, I would like to trust him.

But, there's no doubt that City, Arsenal and Chelsea have made great signings this summer, and all finished comfortably above us last year.

We've signed a midfielder who looks good (praise be) and a young left back. And lost no less than 4 ex-captains.

The squad:

Keepers: Fine, De Gea is my jam.
Centre Backs: We have 3, for 3 starting positions. And Jones plays on average 1 game in a row before breaking himself with exuberance. And the other two are Smalling and Evans. We're f*cked.

Wing Backs: I think Valencia will be good here, but essentially we have a LB who has never played that role (Shaw), a RB who is perma-crocked who potentially could be good in that role but will only ever play 14 minutes a month (Rafa) and some kids that have never played at OT. Oh and Ashley f*cking Young. As a wing back. FFS. We are f*cked.

Central midfield: We have Herrera, who has played 0 minutes in the prem. We have post-disease Fletcher. Carrick is out til mid-season. Fellaini is not a midfielder. That's kind of it. And again, some kids that have barely even played at reserve level. We are f*cked.

Forwards/strikers/wingers: We're stocked and awesome.

So, erm, anyone else worried? I dig we're playing one match a week for most of the season so it's not hugely testing on the squad size, but unless we're promoting Tyler Blackett and Tom Thorpe immediately, we literally don't have enough bodies in defense and midfield.

All I can say in response time your post is: I've seen enough of LVG over the years to not be worried. At the very least we have another coach who clearly seems to enjoy the resources at his disposal and wont waste the excellent Academy to fall in line with the stop gap solutions other clubs seem to go for. Not to say we won't splash some more money... I'd be absolutely shocked if we don't bring in at least 2 more after the US tour. There is only so much young talent to be promoted to first team action in a year when the pressure to return to the top 4 will be tremendous. At least it seems like we have a coach who isn't fazed about the uphill battle at hand.

Yeah, that's my feeling too. Have to trust in LVG in the end. Just hope the fans don't turn on him quickly if things start badly.

Would love to think that players like Thorpe, Pearson, Rothwell and Lawrence are close to being good enough, but I honestly don't. Maybe 2 seasons away.

Fallow LvG since 1995 and I'm not worry that much. I can see United back at the top. At least some of preseason stuff I see was indeed promising. And with the option of bringing in some new talent - maybe one or two CB and hopefully another CM alternative - the sky over OT is looking not that dark.

Make no mistake were not challengers and it doesn't look like anything higher than 4th is realistic but I am confident with LVG.

It's up to Woody to get these signings sorted, unfortunelty seems to have gone really quiet but same happened before we wrapped up Herrera/Shaw.

You will challenge. Maybe not on team strength but should do on momentum. You'd expect to win all your first 6 games. If the momentum helps you get good results against Everton, Chelsea and City in Oct/early Nov then who knows what could happen.
Arse showed last season what momentum can do and they had CL to contend with

Dont see why we cant challenge this year, especially with no Champs League football.

Squad is too broken, we can challenge if we make like another 2-3 signings of real quality but otherwise our squad is broken.

Like Ryan said, we have 3 CBs with which 3 need to start every game with little quality in midfield.

Can't wait to have Janujaz back - though no idea where he plays in LVG's system. Really works best in a 433.

I think I've repressed the vast majority of last season, and that includes just how 'ready' Adnan looked. Had virtually forgotten about him, but he has to move towards being a starter this season. Give him the 11 jersey please.

If you guys get Hummels and Vidal, with no champs league and if they gel, you have a great chance in my opinion. imagine if you got Di Maria aswell! that would be crazy.

We won't get either, unfortunately. And I'm happy enough with Hummels staying where he is in the sense that I like to see some loyalty at such a great club as Dortmund.

Vidal's another story. I think he will move in the near term, but I don't think we're capable of getting him out of Juve.

Nemanja just scored his first for Inter. F*cking Moyes. Can't believe we lost such a player, he's going to be a colossus in Italy.

Excited to see us play Madrid today, even if Ronnie is out. Amazing to hear that he was hanging out with Paddy Crerand and all the United staff. Clearly has a soft spot for us still, I'd be absolutely shocked if we didn't, at some point, go back after him for the end of his career.

Could see him 'replacing' RVP in 2 years time, something like that. He'll have to move centrally as his pace goes, but he could be an amazing striker even after 30 with his ability to strike a ball from anywhere, and aerial threat.

"Subs: all remaining Tour players except Chris Smalling who is injured, as confirmed by van Gaal at his pre-match press briefing."

Here we go again, Smalling's injured... We desperately need at least 1 central defender.

Good first half against Madrid. Seems van gaals getting that little bit extra out of all the players. Still need a new defence though.

 LVG has made Young decent! certainty to start season ahead of 30M signing in Shaw.

really good performance, that first goal :...

nice to see Ronaldo come on too, he'll never return but its nice to see him praise us, genuinely loves the club.

Just got back. Tired as fuck after drinking, kicking a ball around and oh yeah watching United. Nice touch bringing Ronaldo in today. More later.. Maybe a pic or two as well.

Will be interesting to see how seriously the managers take tonights friendly. Would hope despite the rivalry, neither team is overly rough, it's so close to the season start now injuries would be a real waste.

There are a few players I worry about showing their 'exuberance' though. Guess we'll see. Apparently the weather is terrible, so that's not likely to help.
