Manchester United Thread

Now the rumors seem to be about Modric again. I'd love it and think he d be great but I'm going a lil dizzy bc of all the names being thrown around. I still think we ll sign an established name. Correct if I'm wrong tho but other than the usual Ronnie talk I've only consistently heard of our interest in Bale and Modric well before the end of the season. We ll see if this is a case of the writing having been on the wall.

Were not even considering Bale, he's out of reach with his price tag, its something even Real are squinting at.

Gustavo would be a decent signing but the priority is a deep lying playmaker, not a destroyer (with that said even Carrick is getting on now! :()

Metallica's line-up looks likely, only changes I could see would be Anderson for Cleverley.

I've given up on this summer. I don't think we're signing anyone.

Martinez has confirmed that Fellaini's release clause has now expired. So if we wanted him at all Moyes must have known that, and didn't move.

Maybe there's something we don't about with regards to the finances - either in the club or for the Glazers as a whole.

Nice to see Moyes has just noticed that the 'random' computer basically spat out the hardest possible start for the new manager. Not like those fixtures have been out for months or anything.

I mean, if I'd seen we had Chelsea, and away trips to City, Liverpool and Swansea in the first 5 weeks, I would have tried to strengthen the team well in advance of the new season. But that's just me.

I realize my optimism might be nauseating, but try and step away from the ledge until it looks like there is a solid reason to jump :D

Every thread has one, we have Bobby . I love n hate him sometimes :) . I was think 2 things.
1. There's a certain benefit waiting towards the end( clubs realize they need money and willing to let go of players for peanuts.)
2. Moyes was brought in for his management on a shoe string budget. (He stay mid table w chicken feed , above Liverpool for 2 seasons

Sorry, don't always mean to be the doom and gloom merchant, I'm just a bit disappointed with the way the club are acting at the moment. Not that they care a jolt, season tickets are sold out, stock price is up and everything is peachy.

It'd be one thing if the club had come out and said - we're going to give David a chance to really get to know the squad, see what his management skills can do before we decide to go to the market. But they didn't. They explicitly said we have a ton of money, and we need to bring in signings.

So it's interesting.

I'm not someone that wants us to buy the league. At all. I'd be happy enough with us sticking to buying relatively unknown youth players and developing them into the first team.

But we've now lost Hargreaves, Scholes, Fletcher - even O'Shea and Pogba - from central midfield and replaced them with no one. Not even a relatively unknown, potential-filled central midfielder. And the only player from the youth ranks that has even looked close to first XI quality we let go almost immediately.

Anyway, maybe Cleverley will manage more than 25 games for the first time in his career. Maybe Anderson will manage more than 25 games for the first time in his career. Maybe Michael Carrick will go the whole season uninjured, playing literally every serious match. Because if he doesn't, we're in a world of hurt.

I see talk of you guys needing a playmaker, but what happened to Kagawa? I always rated him. Isn't he in Moyes' plans?

That something i also noticed about Metallica's line-up, no Kagawa. He's your most talented player.
In the end United will end up buying a good player, but i'm pretty sure the board see this as a transitional season. They went after Moyes because theyvare thinking long term. Moyes will end up being a very good manager. Buy not buying tons of high profile players, the club avoids too much pressure on Moyes and all in all they became champions with these players. This is a good squad.

I probably would have chose Kagawa but he hasn't really looked the sharpest tool in the drawer during pre-season also it don't help when he's involved in a international friendly round the other side of the planet a few days before the season starts

Exactly, the fans love Kagawa, in fact the one positive of Rooney potentially leaving was it potentially allowing Kagawa time to shine playing behind the striker.

But the fact is he's not a partner for Carrick and that's what we need right now.

I'm looking forward to season regardless of whether we sign someone anyway.

My prefered line up would be (and I'm striking Rooney off, I don't want to consider a season with him at the club, disrespecting a legend in Ferdinand is just too much) and how I'd prefer to see the team run is:

De Gea

Rafael/Jones (use Jones sporadically in this position to keep match fitness)
Vidic/Ferdinand (rotating so as to keep both fully fit, and available for the big games and CL)
Evans/Jones/Smalling - Keep them rotating, and gaining experience (Evans being a priority as he's the best imo)
Evra (or Baines if he joins)/Fabio(/Evra if Baines arrives)

Carrick/Cleverley (deep lying playmaker)
Anderson/Jones (deep lying paymaker/defensive player, when holding results)
Valencia/Januzaj/Zaha (Wide right) Valencia is more stable option imo
Nani/Zaha/Welbeck/Januzaj (Wide left) I still feel Nani has a lot too offer the club, and Welbeck has a workrate.

Kagawa/RvP/Januzaj/Anderson (playmaker) Klopp said it made him sad not to see Shinji central, and I can see why!

RvP/Hernandez/Welbeck - Main strikers in obvious order.

Its just how I would run, but it kind of is calming to reflect in the depth we have in the squad, even if some players aren't the very best possible.

Generally things are pretty good against most teams. The issue is that any combination in midfield that doesn't include Carrick is awful:

Anderson/Cleverley - has failed defensively every time it's been tried. Really badly.

Anderson/Giggs - Haven't seen it much, but would suggest similar to above. Also negative because it has Giggs in central midfield

Cleverley/Giggs - See above

Jones/Anyone - Still not playing a 20 year old central defender with little to no experience in midfield is what a club of United's stature should be doing, but hey, what do I know.

Barring the annual injury crisis, defence is fine, attack is fine and I'm even okay with the wings, despite last season's no show.

.

(On phone so easier to bold the bit I'm responding to) Oh, Christ! Which position this season.. injury curse.

Kagawa is a number '10' or even someone who starts wide and drifts like a Silva/Nasri.

We need a 'Deep lying Playmaker' or a Regista' if your a hipster :))

Regarding him not starting, he's had a weird pre-season, just like Rooney and Nani he's not match fit to start the season (which IMO is our three best players to play behind Van Persie) which shows we actually have a really good squad, its just in the middle of the pitch we have a massive gaping hole:P

You're gonna get Boned today, lads!

I'm saying 1-1 draw, Bony for Swansea and RvP for United. I will even guess that Bony will score between 25-30 minutes with a header and RvP 75-80minutes with a left foot volley! More specifically 26 and 78 but now I'm pretending to he psychic! ;)

Bony is an awesome get for Swansea. Was impressed w him saw in some dutch league games. Along w Michu they have one of the most formidable strike forces in the PL imo. Swansea has had more serious gametime ahead of this so they have a minor leg up but regardless of how we do today, we lost our first game last season so perhaps we should do the same this time :)
