Manchester United Thread

Great read, I think overall he's done really well and been quite unfortunate, The 1999-2001 period was SAF getting to grips with the right tactics for the game and the 2007 team unfortunately got broken up and the Barcelona machine woke up Real Madrid also.

Forgot about Braga today - love CL nights at OT (not that I'm there..)!

Carrick in central defense, but other than that exciting team:

------------------De Gea----------------
--Rafael----Carrick--Evans---Buttner----
----------Cleverley--Fletcher-----------
------------------Kagawa------------------
-------Rooney----Chicarito-----RVP-------

Interesting.

wonder if Chicharito will be appreciated more now...fantastic striker imo.

Sometimes. He was absolutely ace in our system 2 seasons ago, but has struggled over the past year. This was his best game for us in recent memory.

The big problem with him is that he really does offer almost nothing other than finishing. The one move and run he made today shocked myself and most United fans.

Some systems and teams can accommodate a one-dimensional player, but you get the feeling Fergie looks for more in a striker.

Great to have him back scoring though. That's 4 this season, not terrible.

He was brilliant today, showed he has the potential to be an all round top CF, he looked like he needed to prove a point.

I blame the 'comeback Kings' on you Beachryan, didn't you say we 'never' come back anymore recently :))

I'm actually getting all of the credit over on Redcafe for posting the identical thing there after the Everton game. Did my digging and saw we'd not come from behind to win in 18 months.

Since then we've gone behind 7 times, and won 6. Mental. The only one we didn't come back from was Spurs - and we were mighty close then too. I've probably just undone the curse. Or the jinx. Or whatever. Damn you superstition!

Can you start a topic asking when the last time we scored 6-7 goals was? Just so we can start racking up some goal difference, not that GD would ever be important in the title race.

Defensively suspect last night, but I'm pretty happy with the football we're playing at the moment. Awaiting a return to form for Kagawa who seems to be lacking a bit of confidence, though he's still producing assists and goals - that has to be a good sign. Saying that the reports are he's twisted his knee, so he could be out for a few games, I initially thought it was just a dead leg, because he was trying to play through it for so long.

Chicharito is impossible not to love, his work-rate, his movement, his bullet headers and he's a down to earth guy. Hopefully this will mean more game time for him, because he deserves it now, whereas perhaps others don't deserve it as much at the moment.

Another solid performance from Fletcher too, which has kind of gone under the radar.

- and that cross from Cleverley was immense, I don't mind repeating the words Beckham-esque even.

Hernández was fantastic yesterday, made a couple of good runs and great finishing. I did thought that Braga's defence was too focused on closing down Van Persie and Rooney, therefore letting Hernández having too much freedom. This pretty much led to both Chicharito's goals. Braga played well and I really liked Éder, Alan, Hugo Viana, Elderson and Rúben Micael.

I love Hernandez - and I really really really wish I could see him as a first choice, starting player - but I don't think our team is good enough at the moment to afford that. If we could play a 'pure' 442 with just two central mids, and 2 wide players supplying him than maybe. But because we have to drop another player into midfield it generally leaves our front man isolated - and he's pretty useless with his back to goal.

He would be an absolute monster playing alongside someone like Saha (at his peak) or even RVN.

Also meant to add that he scored another last night and was 1 on 1 with the keeper but pulled up both times for offside - neither time was he. Pretty awful from the assistant ref though, particularly the one in the second half. At the time it was 2-2 and Hernandez must have been a full 2 yards onside when the ball was played. Nothing will be worse than the Porto offside for Scholes' goal, but this was close.

I'd take a point at the bridge, nothing against the League Cup but it shouldn't be a priority and then we need to beat Arsenal.

We won't get anything at the bridge in the league - I'm actually more bitter about us having yet another major team away in the CC. We have tons of great youngsters that need a chance and keep getting these ridiculous draws in the cups. Now we're going to lose at Stamford Bridge (no shame in that, Chelsea have an entire team of internationals as a second XI to field that need game time) and it means no more first team matches for Tunnicliffe, Petrucci, Macheda, King and so forth.

The only good news is that apparently Martin Atkinson was overlooked for the Chelsea match. If he'd been the ref again I probably wouldn't have bothered watching.

Their front 4 will tear us apart, thing is though Van Persie quite likes the Bridge and Hernandez's record isn't that bad either.

EDIT: Just heard on November 24th SAF getting his statue unveiled which is nice (Ruud will be their) but is this more signs pointing to this is it for him, last season?

It wouldn't be United if we didn't have half our first team injured. We need to get back to the top of the injury league like last season!

Nice to maybe have Smalling back. Waaaay moreso than Phil Jones I believe he is good enough in the middle. Only issue is that neither he, Evans nor De Gea are good defensive leaders - so a combination of all of those just doesn't communicate well enough for my liking. But alongside Rio or Vidic, Smalling is generally a beast.

Also, I'm thinking 3-1 to Chelsea Sunday, but we might nick something midweek. Thoughts?

If that happens we'd be 7 points off already...but...I still don't know about this Chelsea team. Cold winter on crappy pitches and all that.

Alrighty, game day! Hope we put in a performance. And for the love of God please no starting of Giggsy, especially if Scholes is in there too. We'll get absolutely battered.

United!

How about this time, we don't concede 1-2 early goals?

I think that'll make our lives easier.

Hoping for a draw or a Chelsea win. Looking at the bench of both teams, utds looks stronger. Taking everything into account, I'd rather be chasing Chelsea than utd (despite last year)

Yep. Once again, no midfield.

It's so sad. Our attack looks like it score everytime it goes forward, but it's wasted as Fergie refuses to sign one of the those central midfield type things.

Overrun, and possibly a 4-2 to the Chavs.

Also, Chelsea fans - you're booing Rio Ferdinand. Think for a moment why you're doing that you f*cking spastics.

Edit - Ivanovic off - had to go.
Edit 2 - United are now playing a 4-1-5.
Edit 3 - Torres shouldn't be off imo. There's a teeny, tiny bit of contact. Doesn't explain why his front leg collapses in a heap, I'd argue possibly not a foul but you can't book someone for that.

Don't like winning like that, we already had a 1 man advantage and I was fairly sure we could get a result, but Torres going off removed any doubt. He dived in the sense it wasn't the tackle that took him down, but he had every right to go down because Evans did make contact, never a yellow and definitely not when it's a 2nd yellow. Ref clearly under pressure to book divers.

Good game before all that though, tense.
