Manchester United Thread

Do we really need another injury-prone, left-footed Brazilian attacking midfielder?

Did we really need another Right Footed Wide man last year when we decided to buy Young?

He would be perfect to pair in the holding pair in a 4231 and would fit my obsessive need to have a L/R foot pairing in the centre of my teams :P

Was a big miss last season, hopefully he's fully recovered and we see his form from prior to his injury.

Im hearing we've bid for Lucas Moura, he looks an interesting player but have no idea really what to make of him, Rentboy you seen much of him and if so what you think of him?

I haven't seen as much of Lucas since I'm following the Brazilian League from afar and I watch more Fluminense when I get the chance.
But from what I've seen, he is a gifted player no doubt. Some Brazilian journalists say he's the Brazilian Theo Walcott, and that tells you something about his pace :)
But I don't like such comparisons and Walcott himself is far from being the finished article.

Lucas is seen as a midfielder, as a wide player. But I've seen him playing in attack in a more central position. In both positions he certainly benefits from his pace. But not only that, the lad is good on the ball too. I remember I liked his first touch. Compared to Wellington Nem, I'd say he has less flare in terms of dribbling, but he's a more clinical, accomplished finisher. He is a tad more experienced too. He has more caps for Brazil than Wellington Nem - but I'm pretty sure he "appeared" in the spotlights one season earlier.

He certainly looks promising and he gets a fair amount of coverage on the media, though he is obviously out-shined by Neymar.
But hey, he will be with the Brazilian Olympic team in London, so you guys will have a chance to watch him. Wellington Nem, however, wasn't called up. I don't know why. Mano Menezes got a lot of stick for that, even Romario heavily criticised him for that.

As for Ganso, mark my words: overrated. Again, I've been away from Brazil, but I got to watch him once in a while both in the League and Libertadores. I haven't seen him play really well in one single match. He's classy, skilful, has a good pass, and all that, but he is not a game changer in my opinion. He's not much more than supporting act to Neymar in Santos.

Thanks Rentboy.
Damn shame Nem won't be at the Olympics, I've read a lot and watched a fair few YouTube videos would have loved to have a chance to get a good look at him.

If you had to pick out of the Brazilian wonder boys which would you rather see play for Arsenal?

The easy obvious answer would be Neymar of course. With that hair "style" of his he would fit right in with Gervinho, Song, Sagna... :D
But seriously, he is extremely talented (although too light weight) and apart from the fact the the Brazilian media is getting to the point of spoiling him. There's just too much attention and distractions, he'd better concentrate solely on football. All this superstar thing for someone his age can't be good.
He would benefit a lot from a move to Europe, as it's a step up in terms of level. He needs a bigger challenge, somewhere he would have to get out of his comfort zone, get his head down and keep working hard.

But in all fairness Arsenal would never pay the kind of fee his transfer will command.

Was also watching that Matherto, Scholes screamer against 'pool brought a smile :))

Cheers for the insight Renboy :TU:

Some of Twitter's transfer talk I've picked up.

@TransferScoop: Star Sports headline: Van Utd or Van City #mcfc #mufc - RvP spotted house hunting in Hale http://t.co/yR033eEZ

@Bob_Cass: @Vik_manutd @MartinLipton Hi pal. The Lucas situation is United are in talks to buy him. But his agent wants fortunes - its holding it up.

@BusbyMUFC: (Sao Paulo) President Juvêncio agreed to sell Moura to MUFC after London 2012. 1/2 of the money now 1/2 in 18 months

(via @SaoPauloNewsEng)

I believe we're interested in 50% of the entire footballing population according to the papers/twitter.

It's weird that we've signed so few considering our interest in so many :P

Who want new third kit of Chievo Verona? :D

The joys of being a United fan:

The bad news is that the tour is starting and we've still not signed a midfielder

The good news is that Bebe is on that tour

Welcome to Manchester kid :P

Tour squad looks interesting enough.. Though why Bebe is allowed to go I don't know, perhaps it's an advertising campaign :L

Also read somewhere Everton are set to price themselves out of a deal for Baines as they ask for £5m more than originally expected, and United may seal a double Brazilian Coup with Moura and Ganso joining for a combined fee of £42m, not sure how that would breakdown, most likely £17m for Ganso and £25m for Moura, how his value has dropped from £40m I don't know.

I think Ganso would be the most expensive of the two. Lucas Moura would be somewhere in the region of £15m.

Rumour has it we're trying to get in contact with Lewis Holtby. Anyone have some insight on that german youngster? I only know he's a right winger (hell, why would we need another one), but anyhow, that's just what I read somewhere, I reckon we have other priorities right now.

On the other hand, tour squad seems nice, would get a chance to see the young guns perform with the "big dogs". Can't wait till wednesday! :D

Holtby, quick with an eye for a pass and cross is all I can say.. Maybe a German poster can give more info :P
But even though we are linked, so are Liverpool and One of the top Spanish cluBs..

£15m?

You're joking right?

Double it and we'd still get rejected is what it seems like.

His club Sao Paulo is playing hardball but I doubt they would refuse the kind of offer that was talked about. Something above £25m wasn't it?
I think this is crazy money. I'm not fully convinced that the offer was officially made, otherwise they would have taken it!

Neither him (Lucas) or Ganso are worth this kind of money. I read Arsenal are also after Ganso, but it's so easy to make stuff up at this point.

Another exciting youngster in Brazil is Oscar, from Internacional, who is rumoured to be a Chelsea and Tottenham target.

EDIT: Just read what's going on with Lucas' transfer case. His club Sao Paulo are being cheap bastards
What he is earning (already converted from R$ to £) is the equivalent to £10k per week! So they have no rush to sell him as long as he is earning that much. Also, his rights belong 80% to Sao Paulo and 20% to his family. Officially what was reported is that Sao Paulo wanted to get 30m Euros inside their 80%, but I think this is impossible.
So I think Sao Paulo is trying to gauge how much Lucas wants a move to Man United, and hoping he will give up a big slice of his 20%, which seems unlikely to happen.
It's a very complicated piece of business but I think he won't stay there.

Chelsea have dropped interest on Moura and our only ove competition is Inter! The fact were actually in Europe gives us the advantage at this stage :P

He had a break out season at Mainz the season previous to last when they did really well. Andre Schurlle was in that Mainz team too as I recall and then got bought by Leverkusen. Mainz' manager followed him to Leverkusen as well but got sacked last year.

That break out season came from when he was on loan from Schalke and playing at a team with much lesser expectations.

From what I've seen, he's more of an attacking midfielder than a 'winger. He can play on the sides too like many attacking midfielders but for me is more suited centrally and not really a classic 'winger'.

He's German-English like Werder Bremen's Aaron Hunt. He seems promising but I'm still not convinced. He's still got a LOT to prove at Schalke anyway before going abroad. Kagawa for example already proved he was one of the better players in Bundesliga before getting big move. Even if he can be kinda selfish and inconsistent and still has a LOT to learn and improve as well. But Lewis is not near Kagawa's abilities just yet and still has a lot to prove to his own parent club even.

Do you think its likely we'll sign him then Rentboy?

I think there is still a chance. São Paulo are trying to haggle their way with Lucas and United. I've seen many deals like these going ahead when the player gives up a chunk of his fee to be able to go. I don't know if this will be the case though.

But personally I think the offer United already made is quite high. If the £25m is really true, it's a lot for a youngster, don't you think?
I was discussing this with another friend from Brazil and he reckoned if he was São Paulo he would seal the deal ASAP and send Ferguson tickets to visit Brazil for him and his family, and a basket with Brazilian chocolate, coffee, cachaça, and whatever pleases the man

Don't get me wrong, this kid Lucas is looking very special indeed. But he is totally unproven. Did not win any titles with São Paulo, does not have Libertadores experience under his belt...

I think there's still a chance because you don't usually see Brazilian clubs refuse this amount of money. They are probably waiting for him to feature in the Olympics so his stock value would go further up.
If they are, it's a dangerous game they're playing, because United might not make a new offer and his price could drop as his contract approaches its end (2014 I guess).
