Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Strange game. Carrick-Giggs doesn't seem to click as consistently without Park on the left and when Rooney's having one of those days, nothing works in attack.

Wigan were very good though and deserved the win.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I hope something is done in the off-season with regards to teams who press us.

Whether it's bringing players in that can deal with it or a new tactical approach I don't know but we'll keep losing to teams who do it and soon everyone will be.

We seem incapable of pressing them ourselves as well, so we're fucked either way.

In any case, we usually have a blip in the run-in and hopefully this is it. I don't want Wigan to go down and by all accounts they've played well so I'm not too disheartened. Just a shame we had such a good winning run going and it's been destroyed by a shit performance.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

That, Ladies and Gents, was our annual customary hiccup to the title run-in.

What is it about that Wigan formation? Very rigid and matched our players position very very well.

Ouh well...Back to 5 points lead now.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Quite impressed with Victor Moses, wouldn't mind seeing him on our left flank actually...

Hopefully the ABUs will be happy with us not being given 2 clear penalties last night (handball in the box, and Caldwell pulling Welbeck's arm).
Can't argue with the result though. Wigan's disallowed goal should have stood, and Evans probably should have picked up a second booking. I guess it does even out in the end.

Hopefully that's the wake up call to stay on course for no.20. Squeaky bum time, anyone?

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I was impressed with Nani's cameo last night, been a while since we've seen him and really forgot how much that "type" of player adds to the team. drags so many defenders around him. not sure why Rooney and Hernandez got taken off since crossing became pointless since no one was going to get on the end of anything after that.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I'm kinda happy - we were always going to drop points in the run in and Wigan are by far my favourite team out of the important games left.

What scares me is our lack of fight and general ineptitude.

One thing worth pointing out is that Wigan's pitch is far and away the worst in the premier league - which I think probably hurt our wing play in particular. Valencia's 'trick' of kicking it past the full back and skinning him only works if the ball isn't bobbling all over the place.

Then again, Fergie seemed to cleverly deploy Valencia in the middle, so might not have made any difference!

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Good deal of concrete quotes and things indicating at least two buys this summer being Nathan Clyde from Crytal Palace (a full back, hopefully a left back but I think he's actually on the right side) and Eden Hazard (one of our coaches said Fergie went to see him, and has monitored him for ages.

Think those are sensible positions to acquire young talent in, though I'm starting to think we might need another forward player with Berbatov (who?), Owen and Macheda likely to leave (and Diouf have already gone).

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

His name is Nathaniel Clyne ;) He's right back, but also capable of play on the left side of the pitch. And I would LOVE to see Hazard in United's shirt!

Ha, sorry - shows how well I read the gossip pages!

From all reports sounds like our kind of player - cheap, young, talented but unproven!

Just read that report above - my word City's Net Spend is staggering. I always forget just how much higher it is than everyone else in world football.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

And for the record, I think we're now not going to win the league. I'm getting in here early - but we look tired (particularly Rooney) - and haven't played well in about 5 matches. City have won goal difference, so just need us to drop 5 points.

And if you think we'll get any hint of a good decision at Eastlands, you're sorely mistaken. I think because of the outpouring of media ABU-ism (including Sky hiring Mike F*cking Summerbee as a pundit - seriously? I'm so glad I don't pay Sky money any more) United will have go the rest of the season without a single marginal decision going their way.

So City will have bought one title. I just hope fans of other teams can get over their esctasy of seeing United not win to realise that without United's efforts this season, City would have won the league by almost 20 points, and will likely jsut spend another 100m pounds in the summer, and continue to lose 100m each year as they start a period of dominance.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

:)) Great confidence their, that's the spirit that SAF has installed into the club.

before I go cry myself to sleep that our 5 point lead isn't big enough I'll like to point out that Scholes and Nani should be a big boost to the side tomorrow, (IMO) easily our two most creative players and that should be a boost as we've not created enough in recent games.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Last time we lost we went on a 12 game unbeaten run, i'd be content with that after Wigan :P

I'm still bloody nervous, I wish we were playing fantastic football and not just grinding out results, but I'm keeping the faith, if we can't be optimistic as Man Utd fans, then who can?

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Im confident because the next 3 games are all a week apart which means Scholes should start them all.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Young is going to get himself a reputation and deservedly so.

Other than that, good performance, some nice goals and a 5 point gap, good stuff. Some of Scholes passing in that game was brilliant, it's a joy to see him play, it really is.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I'm embarrassed by Ashley Young.

Also a little annoyed that we didn't score more. Goal difference will be a factor I'm sure of it.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Fergie wasn`t embarrassed, he said it was a penalty even if Young was dramatic about it. He`ll be encourage to do it again . Ronaldo stopped diving sooner after leaving PL . It could be refs might need an extra convincing ? We seen a clear pen not given and getting a yellow for diving...the jury is still out me think.

Do I think Young is playing w/ fire ? its squeaky bum time the pressure is a bit more atm.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Well there was contact but he moved his leg to make sure then went down like he was being blown up in an action film or something.

These things get given all the time though.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I don't get the fuss over this one. He went past the defender who tried to get out of the way but didn't. He clipped Young, and Young was then stumbling and couldn't get to the ball. It was a foul. If Young stays on his feet, he gets no call and another defender clears the danger. It's not like last week where he just dove.

As I said in the other thread, people made their mind up before even seeing it again. If it was any other player, there wouldn't even be controversy. It was a foul, plain a simple. A soft one, but a foul nonetheless, no matter how much conspiracy people want to come up with something else.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

What an idiot. Even Fergie didn't really bother attempting to defend him after the game as he's done in the past with other players.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Comfortable 4-0 victory, which was never really in doubt and everyone is talking about someones silly theatrics, it was unnecessary. Can't see him winning any penalties soon, the boy who cried wolf.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

was a penalty but the dive following it was both cringeworthy and idiotic, I do lay some of the blame to referee's though that for some reason if you stay on your feet even if theirs contact like that they won't give a penalty, so it causes players to make sometimes the most ridiculous dives.

Exactly my point.

Also love that I've not seen a single mention in the press/ punditry about Shay Given deliberately punching the ball away from Welbeck when outside the box. Clearly it's only cheating if it's a United player I guess. Given didn't even get cautioned!

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Not first team related, but our Reserves team just won the league with a full 4 matches left, which is impressive in itself, but the manner was even better.

Went 3-0 down away at Newcastle (including one horrible decision to award a handball for a chest control) and came back to win 6-3, with lots of players shining, including Will Keane who scored 4. Bizarrely, Pogba was probably the worst of the non-defenders out there.

Anyway, shows that our young players are still around, and while there is a big leap up in terms of quality, a few of them look very close to being good enough to be squad players. Petrucci, Pogba and Keane in particular, but Lingaard, Cole and Tunnicliffe look decent shouts too.

I'm cautiously optimistic that Keane is the real deal. Hints of Ruud in his general play and finishing. Needs a season out on loan - if Wigan stay up that would be ideal for him - already comparable to Di Santo imo.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I think we should stick him at Peterborough or somewhere, not as much pressure with it being a league down and Darren Ferguson is much more likely to give him a chance on advice from his dead.

Same with Macheda really, though I wouldn't be surprised to see Kiko go in summer.

Apparently we had De Laet up front during the 6-3 game and he scored, madness.

De Laet was utterly useless at full back in the first half - responsible for 2 of the goals in one way or another. Moved him to midfield, he ran the show. Kid is rapid, despite his other flaws.

I thought Darren left Peterborough?

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

He left them for Preston (hence we sent King and Welbeck there) but then did a shite job and got sacked.

Went back to Peterborough last season I think, probably why Tunnicliffe was sent there.
