Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I am not sure about the rest of you lot but it irks me to see Patrice Evra all smiley and feelin all cheeky in the tunnel.I have never seen any of our captains do that before...usually its about a picture of concentration and focus in the tunnel before marching onto the green.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I don't think Paddy has ever been anything other than smiley and cheeky though.

I'm all for concentration and focus but if he can show he's relaxed enough for the pressure not to get to him then it's a good message to send out.

That said, hopefully not too relaxed...but then you never know with his defending this year...

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I don't think SAF was scouting anyone, he rarely does that, its more likely he was in France enjoying himself and just went to a game.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

So, 1 point ahead with 10 games left. Would never, EVER have believed it at the start of the season - really thought this year would be about youth players getting a chance and trying to grow a core of them together. Mental.

On that vein, who do you think will make it at United of the youth? For me:

Will/have made it:
Welbeck
Nani
De Gea
Rooney
Jones
Hernandez
Evans

Might make it:
Smalling
Fabio
Rafael
Cleverley

Won't make it:
Macheda
Diouf
Anderson

I genuinely think that's reasonably impressive for a group of under 25's. Obviously no Barcelona, but if that unit can gel and enjoy their football together, we should definitely improve over time.

------------De Gea------------
-Jones-Smalling-Evans-Fabio---
-------Cleverley-?????--------
---Nani-----Rooney---Welbeck--
------------Hernandez---------

That team could play for a LONG time together. Just looking for that final piece (Pogba?) to come in when Carrick wanes.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

And Pogba has apparently signed new deal with United?

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

And Pogba has apparently signed new deal with United?

Unconfirmed by club/ player so far. Won't be excited til then - but figure him playing yesterday and then a full 90 for the ressies today has to be a good sign. Would be a nice piece of news to be sure.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Nani and Rooney can't really be apart of that list, your streching to include them two considering their among the best in the world in their positions.

Smalling has IMO made it as much as you could say Evans or especially Jones. Evans is in currently good form so he's got people excited and Jones is a great talent but I don't see a certain position for him. Smalling is a very good CB today and will hopefully become World Class someday.

Rafael and Fabio will make it, They'll only leave if they decide to move to La Liga IMO.

saying all that I agree for bringing in young players we do well but your shock at being top also has to consider the somewhat impact Scholes has had. he's today still the best CM in the league which is awesome but he's also 37 and nowhere near as good as he was 4-5 years ago, to replace his quality STILL of today we'll need a top drawer signing in that area.

Craziness. We've somehow top having had our captain and best player contribute at 3 games all year, and having no midfield to speak of for most of it too.

Carrick for BPotY?

Also, Fergie was in France watching Lyon v Lille on Saturday. Random. Hazard? Who else is there we might be interested in?

He was there getting his wine, that's all

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Travelling squad

De Gea, Amos
Rafael, Fabio, Ferdinand, Smalling, Evans, Evra
Scholes, Giggs, Carrick, Cleverley, Pogba, Park, Valencia, Young
Rooney, Welbeck, Berbatov, Hernandez

Looks like we're going for it, I'm glad, would be too easy to put out a weak team and dismiss the Europa League. Good to see Valencia back as well.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Why would we dismiss it, I'd love to win it, I just don't think our current squad is mature enough for European football, that naivety is the reason were in the Europa League and also the reason were going into this game behind.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I think there's a good argument to "dismiss it", not one I personally agree with though.

The argument being this is going to be a very demanding game, one we'll do well to win, arguably it might be worth putting out a weak/younger team, getting knocked out and focusing on the league. Big game this Sunday away at Wolves and only 3 days after this tie. If Wolves are in a determined mood (seems unlikely at the moment, but this is football) then us having a european hangover won't help.

But yeah, i'd prefer to win every competition we're in, so I want us to go for it tonight, even just for our reputation.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I'm not sure tbh. Given the deficit we have to overcome and that we're playing Sunday, I definitely wouldn't risk Scholes and Carrick.

It's funny, almost all the people who watch Bilbao regularly said their performance against us was their best in recent memory. I can't work out if it's because Fergie bodged the lineup so much of if they were just up for it.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I'm devastated. Not about the Europe League - joke of a trohpy - but of a United side that don't have any fight in them.

First time in almost 25 years I've seen a United team so unwilling to pull up their socks and work for it. They're hiding out there.

I blame Fergie. No tactical awareness, no motivation and no signings.

I'm happy to lose to a wonderful Bilbao team, but not like this. It's awful.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

We were bad, they were great.

Almost (But not) glad we didn't make a comeback, because it won't mask our continued weak showing vs sides who will press us like this.

You're right to say our players weren't putting in a good shift though, no-one highlighted this more than Evra, shame we have so many injury problems, because he needs dropping/resting at the moment, he's a liability.

Anyway, credit to Bilbao and congratulations to their fans.

Oh... it's a stupid competition anyway and I never wanted to win, bring on the league challenge! :P

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I saw a stat somewhere that Bilbao ran more in the game at OT than any team in the last decade there - just phenomenal.

Oh and if Park wasn't Fergie's pet he would NEVER get a game for us based on his performances this season. It genuinely isn't far off playing with 10 men when he's 'playing'.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

If Evra's on the pitch then it's 9 men, and only 3 defending, which is suicidal against even half decent teams, let alone fantastic attacking teams like Bilbao.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

joke of a trophy

If I was a pro, I wouldn't cry about playing in the trophy. People looking down at these type of trophies do my nugget in. Snuck up snobbery.
I agree that when out of the Champs League then they shouldn't go into the competition but it is what it is. When in it, you try to win it. Simple. Calling it a joke of a trophy isn't right.

Say your kid grows up to play in it, would you call it a joke then or be immensely proud of him for getting to that level? It's clearly a decent level as look at some of the football played in it. I know how I'd feel about it.

Fucking winds me up when spoiled little gits say things like it.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I don't know, there's no doubt for me that it's lost a bit of its magic since the Uefa cup days, probably partially down to the loss of the 2nd/3rd/4th placed teams to the Champions League.

But seeing how much it meant to the Athletic Bilbao fans, it's hard to dismiss it and in that sense i'm happy they went through instead of us.

Still gutted we're out though.

I saw the Bilbao fans give Giggs an ovation when he was subbed, they apparently also clapped Rooney's goal and then at the end turned to our fans and started singing 'United, United'. Some fans swapped shirts/scarves as well.

Classy, fantastic fans that support a great club with a promising future and one of the world's best managers. Hope they win it.

And it 'fucking winds me up' when people take that holier than thou attitude too.

Should we celebrate the Charity Shield as much as the CL? Carling Cup as much as the League?

Obviously a trophy is a trophy and once you're in a competition you should try to win your matches but your point of view completely ignores the fact that teams have to prioritise their fixture list. So when you have a Europa League match in between 2 crucial league matches - you play a weaker squad in Europa League because the league is more important.

Similarly, if you're in 6th place in the league but in the CL semi finals - you go all out to win the Champions League, and screw your league form - that's how a lot of teams have done it recently (Liverpool, Milan come to mind).

So yes, as a spoilt rotten United fan, I'm glad we prioritise the league over the Europa. That's the kind of decision the manager has to make.

And it clearly DOES mean more to Bilbao than us - both fans and players. So I'm happy for them and wish them the best - they were both magnificent.

It's not holier than thou. I just don't agree with people belittling these type of competitions. Who do they think they are? Yes they aren't the highest priority for some teams but it shows disrespect to the tourney.
I want my team to win. Period. Doesn't matter what competition it is.
Friendlies? They are practice so obviously not as passionate as when it comes to competitive games. My team gets to Charity Shield, I want them to smash whoever they are playing.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Simply put you're in a completely different position to a lot of United fans.

Yes we want our team to win, but we've spent the last few years having excellent runs in the Champions League and laughing at Liverpool because they've been reduced to the Europa League and stuck on Channel 5.

It is a 'joke' of a trophy in that respect, because you laugh and joke about it when your rivals are relegated to competing in it.

That said, it's still a brilliant competition by any measure and as we know all too well, we're certainly not too good for it.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

isn´t he sold to Hannover permanently?

Possibly, I should really know. I originally thought it was a loan deal, but think you're right.

He's having a good time over there too. Great to see The One living up to his potential.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Honestly I'm disappointed when a player gets stupidly sent off like that, it ruins the game.

But, 4 points clear and improved our goal difference, can't really complain can I? :P

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

From the metro..

Mathieu Debuchy is part of Manchester United's summer transfer plans, as Sir Alex Ferguson continues his search for a new right-back.
When the United manager travelled to France to watch Lille take on Lyon last weekend, it was assumed he was monitoring Spurs target Eden Hazard.
Ferguson watched a video of France's recent friendly with Germany and was impressed by the 26-year-old's display, so wanted an opportunity to see him first hand, reports RMC.
The veteran boss views Debuchy as a possible replacement for Rafael, after growing concerned about the Brazilian's defensive capabilities and fitness record.
Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have filled in at right-back this term, but both are happier playing in central roles.
Should Ferguson decide Debuchy is the man he wants for the problem position, he is likely to face strong competition for his signature, as both Bayern Munich and Valencia have kept a close eye on his form this season.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

But if we want Debuchy, we also have to buy Giroud:
