Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

then I'd back us to kick on after new year.

Depends heavily on who we buy in Jan and how quickly they bed in, imo.

Fear this will be Fergie's last straw with Anderson. I love the pudgy lil bugger, but man he's been appalling in the last few games.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

That was indeed terrible, the whole team bar 2-3 looked average bunch(which their not), I guess its going to take a a little longer for us to recover from the City defeat.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

The best thing about the match was probably the little kids who were giving high pitched chants of "United" throughout the match, which amused me.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I do think blooding Pogba and possibly Morrison right now could be what the team and fans need, could inject that bit of excitement and lift everyone which I think we need.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Agree on Pogba - Morrison is busy being a tw*t right now. Didn't play for the Ressies tonight and is now tweeting about how he can't wait for the end of the season.

Presumably because he has some contractual freedom or something. Still, for a kid that has barely played a senior game, he really needs to draw in his oversized ego.

Sucks, because he's the most talented player I've seen at that age in years.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I can't quite understand him.

Plays well in his cameo against Aldershot, possibly if he didn't play tonight then he could've been lined up for the bench against Sunderland (especially with our midfield issues) and then he goes and does this.

Seems like some people are just genuine dickheads.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Ha, and now it 'turns out' he just posted that can't wait til end of season thing because he just booked a holiday.

Hrm....

Anyway, have faith in his ability, if not his temperament....

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Yeah, what a weird world we live in when we can see footballers using lil messages to wind each other up!

Pogba for a start on Saturday? We're missing Young, Giggs, Park, Cleverly, Smalling and Anderson...so unless Rooney is in there can't see us having much midfield presence at all. Sigh.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Yeah expect a few out of position, Rooney in midfield might be one but then I don't t really like him their but SAF's post match interview seems like it's probably going to remain the case for a little longer.

to be honest the whole team need to raise their game, most have been below par for a few weeks.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

With Rooney in midfield, this could only means game time for Berbatov to play alongside Hernandez or Welbeck...I reckon the bulgarian need a goal or two today.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Well it's been dire so far but nice to see Wes Brown helping out the celebrations by scoring for his old club.

Also amazing gesture by the club to rename the north stand after SAF, he looked genuinely surprised by it as well, perhaps he really didn't know about it until today.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

To be fair, we were pretty awesome for almost all of the 2nd half - at least til the 80th minute.

The media will say it was another terrible performance, but it was much improved, thankfully.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

We were poor during the first half...lacked real penetration.Passes were going sideways and backwards most of the time.I think what the team lacks now is, another protagonist besides Rooney.I hate to say it but Giggs probably would have been useful last night on the left side of midfield. We also need to compliment Evra's play on the left from the right. His overlapping runs down the left is becoming to predictable at times.Jones as good as he is as a defender is certainly not a fullback. He cant cross and his first touch is awful.I am glad we grinded out that win but it was almost nerve wrecking to see us hold out like that to Sunderland,no disrespect.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I just don't really see what Fergie is building towards at the moment. It feels more like he's just trying to survive each match - which is ridiculous when you think of the squad he has assembled.

I like that Jones is young, exciting and a new buy but totally agree - he's not a full back. Similarly, I think it's always a mistake to play Hernandez alone up front. Which is something that has been happening more and more this season.

So in defense, we lack a natural full back and have only managed to field our first choice pairing once this season.
In midfield, we have no midfield and are reliant on a 22 year old, injury prone player that has only played in that position about 7 times.
Up front, we're starting a short, pacy poacher as a lone striker.

Fingers crossed we survive the international break, and in a couple weeks we manage to get this team back on the pitch, and stick with it a bit:

---------------De Gea----------------
--Rafael---Rio-----Vida------Evra----
-----------Carrick-Cleverley---------
-----Nani-----------------Young------
---------------Rooney----------------
---------------Welbeck---------------

Also - how good has De Gea been since the first 3 matches? 20 years old ffs!

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Luck and injuries have played a part.

Well it's well known he wanted a midfielder this summer, he couldn't truly have forseen that Cleverley would be the victim of Kevin Davies and we were doing fine up until that point.

I suspect Pogba and Morrison may be very much at the forefront of his thinking soon because it'll get harder and harder to identify a midfielder than we can actually get that'd be worth it. The moment for Sneijder has passed, we missed out on Nasri and I highly doubt we'd get the likes of Goetze or Eriksen.

The back line (as with the entire squad) has been beseiged by injuries but when one or both of the twins get fit I suspect they'll be back at RB and Jones will be benched despite him playing very well. We've had Vidic and Rio back as the central pairing for the past two games and looked more solid. DDG is brilliant, simply put.

I just think once we get players back the whole team will start to click again. Nani has been completely off but if can recapture the form we'll be better, either that or we give Valencia some games. Getting Giggs back will make a difference as well I reckon.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

As much as I'd love Goetze he seems to be yet another that will stock Real's huge bench of quality midfielders.

Quite like the look of Eriksen, though he didn't really do anything at the U21s despite the hype.

Interestingly, our former youth player Magnus Eikrem is up for both young and overall player of the year in the Norwegian league. I wonder if he'd be ready to make the step up - couldn't really be any worse than what we have. Was always disappointed we got rid of him, was only little but sooo much quality. Like a young Modric.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I am sitting on the fence when it comes to Hernandez...He is just a poacher...a very good one.However...he does not contribute to the play as much and he does not hold up the ball well upfront.Welbeck and Rooney should start upfront in my book.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Well it's nice to have a pure poacher in the team though.

Not every player is meant to contribute to different phases of play. Some have their specialties and in his case are just meant to put the ball in the back of the net.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Noone else in our team offers the same goal threat, and noone else stretches the opposition back line like he does.

His movement means the defenders marking him never have time to rest and are constantly being pulled out of position which creates space for others like Rooney.

Plus he is capable of better all round play, he played a peach of a pass out to Welbeck a few games back, did the same in the Gold Cup final in the summer. He's been injured this season and is perhaps better coming off the bench like he did at the start of last year but eventually he'll get back to top form and be indispensable I bet.

Doesn't help that the last few times he's played he's effectively been up on his own, he needs Rooney up with him like the end of last year.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

It could be worse - we could be relying on Berba & Macheda...!

Think we could do with starting Rooney & Valencia for a few games. How many goals did Rooney get from Tony V's crosses last season? Just shows how effective it is to have a winger beat his man once and cross, unlike Nani's 'take-him-on-3-times-and-play-a-soft-pass' technique this season.
That's where Hernandez would be most lethal - picking off any scraps from the link up from those 2.

Our biggest problem at the moment is our midfield isn't strong or quick enough to get hold of the ball and carve defences open. Whether that's down to injuries, or certain players not being good enough I don't know.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Eh im sure Nani got far more assists than Valencia last season, I don't see Valencia getting games to be honest with Nani and Young fit, the former is undroppable and the latter offers more variety.

midfield I just think SAF is stuck with the idea that with Cleverley, Anderson and Pogba Morrison a creative midfielder will leave some of those guys not getting games, we might get get a defensive midfielder but even then once Rafael is back we've got a bundle of CB's and Jones could occasionally get that role.

Injuries and Youth, got to look at the bigger picture :))

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

A DM/holding midfielder would be the signing we really need and has been for a while.

I just wish there was a sign that we were trully looking at one. No scouts been seen at Rennes for M'Villa or Valencia for Banega? :(

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Didn't Banega just get a pretty nasty knee injury?

Agree he's the type of player we need. To be honest, the Hargreaves at Bayern was a great shout from Fergie...but then again...
