Manchester United Thread

In february, we had a shortage of defenders. At one point, we had Keane in defence.
Now it looks like we have too many.
Anyone have an idea of who the first team defenders will be?

Doesn't Mourinho also want a much smaller squad of something like 23 players? I don't think they'll be buying unless they can get rid of more players...

Yeah. Mourinho did say that. But he also said that he (like Ranieri) doesn't decide who they buy. So they'll keep buying players if they want to.

First team defenders would be G.Neville,P.Neville,Ferdinand,Brown,Silvestre,O'Shea,Heinze and Fortune(?)

I mean who will be the starting 4 defenders.
Any idea?

Well with Sheasy being injured and Rio not back till sept it means Heinze, Neville, Brown and Silvestre will get a decent stab at playing together, Pique will probley spend a year at the Academy.

Neville at 29 is now the senior citizen in the defense the rest are all 25 or under which looks good for the future.

pique n. A state of vexation caused by a perceived slight or indignity; a feeling of wounded pride.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta: "United have failed to respect the effort some clubs are making in bringing on young players. "We'll see this through to the end."

Pique: "You can see that Barca don't want to negotiate. They say I belong to them, but I'm not a slave. If they don't want to negotiate then Fifa will have to decide what United have to pay.

had to post this up, its from the chelski thread:

I think he illustrates the fact that some (not all) Man Utd fans have diffculty accepting that their team is on a downward spiral. A few years ago his team used to win the PL easily and looked like a half decent side in the CL. Now they are miles behind Arsenal and Chelsea, both of whom have reserve teams as good as (or in the case of Chelsea better) than Man Utd first team. Add to that the fact they'll now have to qualify for the group stages of the CL, and might get a tricky tie. It all means their metaphorically running scared. Last season they won the FA Cup, not a bad competiton but over recent years they've opted out of it and/or fielded weak teams in it - I guess anyone would be upset if they'd witnessed such a decline.

pure comedy, I guess the fact that we're signing better players and attracting players for the future is beyond them, not to mention having a world class stadium that is being expanded to 75K, like most ABU's they think that cos we've had a bad season its over, when will they learn.

dont like the sound of this!!

The teenage winger is likely to be selected in Portugal's Olympic squad and with matches spanning 18 days from August 11 to the final on August 28, he could be called up for the entire first month of the domestic season.

However, United would try to persuade Portugal that Ronaldo should be exempted from selection as he has now moved beyond the stage of playing in a tournament that, in footballing terms, holds little prestige in comparison to the European Championships.

United, though, could be fighting a losing battle.

Portugal are sure to want their strongest squad as they look to build on the feel-good factor generated by reaching the final of Euro 2004.

Should Ronaldo be selected, he would miss United's two-legged Champions League qualification clash and also their Premiership opener at Chelsea.

And with the Community Shield against Arsenal and Premiership clashes with Norwich and Blackburn scheduled for August, Ronaldo might not feature until the seventh game of the season - away at Bolton on

after such a promising first season with us, this year is gonna be a massive one for the kid, I think we have decent cover on the right to cope for a few games but I'd still rather Ronnie gets back to OT soon as...

Funny that before the tourney Big Phil was pretty down on Ronaldo and now, well he's been instrumental in getting them to the final, says it all really, and we only laid out half of what we got for Becks, lol at anyone who thinks Fergie doesnt know what he's doin....

that (if it indeed happens) will be a right pain n the arse
hope it doesnt happen
fuckin olympics

Ronaldo really does amaze me. Just when you think he is going to have a quiet Euro championships he goes and makes himself a regular, helping Portugal to the final  .

Ronaldo is gonna be the forward's main supply. We can't lose him for a single game. He's quite influencial.
And who gives a damn about the olympics anyway?

He's gonna be the player to watch next season, but I hope Fergie dosent burn him out by playing him too much.

tbh honest i am not too worried about that
the guy seems to have a very good fitness level
in the england game he still looked busy and 'fresh' well into extra time

will be gutted if he does have to go to the fucking worthless olympics :x

I thought the rule was that if you've already been capped by your country, you can't join the olympics team. Is that true?

The olympic teams consist out of youth players(so technically Ronaldo is one of them) + They may call up 3 "older" players as far as i know.

More on the Rooney story.
Arsene Wenger said that he'd really want Rooney at Arsenal but he says that Man Utd are the ones who'll most likely take him.

I think I'm getting a bit too excited over these rumours. But just the thought of a Rooney and Ruud partnership just gets me hyped up for next season.

Sure he is a fit guy but at 19 and playing in the EPL,which is faster than the international league, this boy can be open to injuries and fatigue, the way he plays dosent help him either.I remember a boy younger than him from everton :D tried to break his league by scissors tackling him last season.I am sure Fergie will use him more this coming season but he must also protect him ala Ryan Giggs to prolong his playing career.

you i agree with u there mate
Fergie's track record of working with youngsters (e.g like u say giggs) is second to none, ronaldo is in safe hands

i wonder if that lad who tried breaking Ronaldo's leg will be lining up with him next season ;).........

You have to remember that if Fergie loses control of what Ronaldo does then...well you know what happened to Beckham

lets just hope he doesnt start dating some self obsessed, media crazy bitch, pop star then! ;)

apparently we are not going to make a bid for Rooney :( , (i still hope we do tho!)

Basically our chief executive David Gill has said that Fergie wanted to sign one striker and that has been filled by the signing of Smith. We are now more concerned with selling a couple of players rather than bringing more in

But honestly, United have just signed Saha and Smith... why need Rooney?

I really dont know.. i think we really need a new left winger

I think Giggs still has about another two/three years left in him. But the problem with buying/getting a replacement is that no-one seems to jump out at you as Giggsy's successor.

Robben would have perfect if we didnt mess that up.

Fuck Robben
if a player is not 100% commited to sign for us then they can fuck off, money grabbing little twat

lol did you see him against Portugal, all he did was moan and dive.

Rooney will either be with us for the start of the season or in Jan.

What Gill was saying is that a massive bid of £30mill plus wont be put in, which is fair enough, but money will be generatred from the sale of Butt and Forlan and then maybe Smith will be part of the deal (Everton we're interested in him before he signed for us).

Although Everton want big bucks, with Rooney holding out and refusing to sign a new contract there isnt much Everton can do they know he wants to join United and could end up losing him for nothing if they stand in his way.

Wenger admitted that he "dreams" of bringing Rooney to highbury but conceeded that young scouser will play for the reds.

Of all our rivals we have made some very good signings, to date Arsenal have only signed a Dutch winger (lol he was so disliked by his former teammates they threw a party when he left) Chelsea have signed the Porto rightback, Cech (GK) and Kezman (CF) and liverpool have signed Cisse with more to come.

This season promises to be a good one, the coach's of the Spanish and European Champions have chooses to come to our league and some of Europes most exciting youngsters are also playing here.

Bring it on, cos "WE WANT OUR TROPHY BACK!!!!"

Although i'm a man u fan, i think the gunners or chelsea will win it. I really don't think man u's midfield can really fight against Vieira or Steven Gerrad. I think Roy Keane will really struggle against them... but with Quieroz back on our side, maybe we have a bit of HOPE...
