Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

I was surprised to see Dossena as the lone player in the box a lot during the game, he got himself into goalscoring positions quite a lot which is interesting.

I'm not wholly convinced he's right for Liverpool but he did do well on Wednesday I have to admit.

More of this please?

Re: Liverpool Thread

That article is a bit silly, Your a good side who are underachieving but last season was a season where you over achieved. Your 3rd or 4th spot team not much more or less.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Would love to see Aquilani start on sunday I think it could be a game
that he would relish in seeing as Arsenal like to play football, not
knowing Rafa it could happen....

Re: Liverpool Thread

Benítez is assumed to have spent around £38.5m on new players this summer and raised a similar sum through the sales of Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa, Sebastián Leto and Paul Anderson. Liverpool did not actually pay out £38.5m, however. Roma revealed on their website they received only a first instalment of £5m on the £18m transfer of Alberto Aquilani, and Glen Johnson's £17m arrival from Portsmouth comprised writing off monies owed by the Fratton Park club for Peter Crouch and a loan fee for Jermaine Pennant.

The Liverpool manager also wanted to sign Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina, before the Montenegro striker scored twice against his team in the Champions League, and Matthew Upson of West Ham, only to discover both were out of the club's financial reach. Asked if his net spend was nothing this summer, Benítez replied: "Yes."

Liverpool's managing director, Christian Purslow, has stated there was a net spend of £20m but that includes the new long-term contracts awarded to Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Yossi Benayoun and Daniel Agger.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Not sure what you mean there Dags?

I always said that most of your transfer budget went on signing on fees for contract renewals (surely Rafa would have been aware of this) and that you overpaid for Johnson (Portsmouth sold Kranjcar for £2.5m and Crouch for £9m in the same transfer window).

Imagine how different your season might look if you'd bought a cheaper alternative to Johnson (someone in the £5-10m range), signed Kranjcar for pittance giving you some flair and creativity in the attacking third and still had money left over for Upson.

I dont think Jovetic would have been available for any less than you paid for Aquilani.

Actually, now you mention it, Andy Hunter who wrote the artcile is a Liverpool fan by the way so there is a small chance it may contain slight bias.

Andy Hunter said:
Benítez had until now steadfastly refused to blame Liverpool's financial predicament for the failure to build on last season's second-placed finish, despite spending only what he raised through player sales in the summer, after the American owners were ordered to lower the club's debt from £310m to £250m in their latest refinancing deal in July.

And I'm sure you'll agree that is quite frankly a load of bollocks because Rafa has been peddling this line for months and months.

Good luck with your fourth new start to the season guys, go get 'em.

Great advice, weren't you one of the moaners saying instead of buying all these 5 to 10 mil wasters he should just spend big on a couple of really good players :D

Anyway, great results today! Although whether we will actually take advantage tommorow is questionable.

Re: Liverpool Thread

No I said the players he's bought in that price range have generally been shite. Benayoun is the main exception.

Re: Liverpool Thread

So we signed Aquilani, who will give us some flair and creativity in the attacking third.

We replaced Arbeloa with someone just as good at defending but also with someone who's been excellent at creating chances as well as scoring a number of goals. And that player didn't come out of our miniscule transfer budget for the summer either due to the pittance the owners decided to give Rafa.

Just imagine if the Americans had gave Rafa some actual transfer funds this summer and we could've signed the likes of Upson, Shawcross or Michael Turner for under £10m.

Re: Liverpool Thread

 You guys are still backing Rafa?! I actually think you'll win tomorrow but probably lose the following week, Also its been proven MANY MANY times and what I predicted (yet I said March its only December) that your net spent is higher than ours and most others.

You haven't read any of the links about our finances then?

Re: Liverpool Thread

What that Rafa's using it as a excuse? We have a worse debt than yours but you won't see SAF blaming the debt, Rafa has spent poorly but lets brush over that eh.

Re: Liverpool Thread

How much are you given each summer by the owners? Has Ferguson ever been told he can't have a player he wanted? You can afford to spend £18m or whatever it cost for Nani and leave him in the stands wasting away, we can't.

We HAD to sell to buy this summer, when have United ever had to do that?

Re: Liverpool Thread

Very good performance from us so far, Lucas in particular has been quality but everyone has pulled their weight and done well.

Also I've never seen such a stonewall penalty claim refused before as the one on Gerrard, absoloutly awful decision.

More of the same from us in the second half and I'd fancy us to win by a couple of goals.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I get that it's time to rally the troops, but that article is confusing. The hypothesis seems to be 'Which one was a blip, was it last season when we came 2nd, or this season when we're performing like a 3rd/4th place team'

Well given the past 5 seasons, I'd go with last season being the blip.

Anyway, you lot are p*ssing all over Arsenal at the moment. This full court press style is totally killing l'Arse. It's not pretty, but man it's effective.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Of course it was too good to last, we had to resort to the shite football we've come to expect when we have a lead. The second half has been fucking awful for us, just disgusting and not good enough.

Yet another loss. three wins from fifteen games in all competitions

Re: Liverpool Thread

:LMAO: Fresh start midweek eh? :))

Seriously though you had a very good first half but just fell to pieces, Your well and truly lacking that player that keeps things ticking. seems so disjointed between attack and defence.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Yep, doesn't help when Carra HOOOOOOOOFS it at every opportunity. Hearing the Arsenal fans shouting it everytime was very amusing. Did Arsenal actually create a good chances?! The Arshavin was a decent halfchance but can't remember much more. Terrible mentality from the players, went to pieces after conceding and resorted to hoofs.........

As for Webb, had a dream last night that he would f@#k our match up, what a surprise to see he won't give any important decisions. He was poor for both teams.

Re: Liverpool Thread

That's weird, when they showed him on Skysports, he was against a wall somewhere. Must have changed seats at halftime!

Re: Liverpool Thread

Surprised Alonso hasn't been killed by angry fans.

Such a weird game, you completely nullified them in the first half, and you'd have to feel if Torres was fit he'dve gone to town on their defence, but then it swung completely the other way in the second half, and even though Arsenal didn't really create much, when you've got players like Nasri and Arshavin you just don't need to.

I think Aquilani needs to start every game he can from now on. He's clearly off the pace at the minute but that'll come with game time, and it beats playing Lucas who is just so damn negative and unnecessary.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Lucas was our MOTM today, he was superb. But at home, we shouldn't need to play two defensive midfielders and I'd sacrifice Lucas for Aquilani personally.

Re: Liverpool Thread

If you've got Lucas playing, you shouldn't play Mascherano, and vice versa.

I'm actually starting to subscribe to the fact that Lucas is a good player, I just reckon he gets told to keep it extremely simple by Rafa, and if he was given free license to go forward, play killer passes and so on, he'd show everyone why he was Brazilian player of the year or whatever it was.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Today´s match gave me again the impression that players are tired of Benitez. You could notice that in Gerrard or Carragher ´s expressions. I consider Rafa a super manager and want him to stay but if it is true that the players are tired of him then we have a big problem cause the players are the ones that go to the pitch and play.
