Re: Liverpool Thread
First of all, congrats to Gerrard on the award. Would have liked one of our defenders to get it but Gerrard deserved it just as much.
And sorry to have to burst your bubble but yes, none of that counts for anything until you've actually achieved something. It's like me saying "even though you're 3 points ahead, we've got 4 games in hand!". You've got to win those 4 games before you can start celebrating. Football is a very unpredictable game. You say you're scoring a lot more goals, right? Look back to the last time Chelsea won the title. Their goal difference was 12 goals higher than the next best score. They also had the best defence in the country for the last two years. They must have been jumping with joy like you guys but for some reason ended up losing the title the year after. You can score all the goals you want this season, it wont guarantee you that you'll do the same next year. So if you're gonna score a lot of goals, make sure you win the title that year as well cuz otherwise all those goals will have gone to waste. Let me give you a better example. Everyone know's Ronaldo was unstoppable last season, but lets assume he had scored his 42 goals and the team still hadnt won the title. So now, am I supposed to take that as a huge confidence boost into next season? Of course not. Cuz we know its very unlikely that he's gonna score another 42 goals next season. And if we cant win the title with his 42 goals, how are we gonna do it with fewer goals the next year? Unless the other teams were worse as well the next season but thats not something you can realistically hope for cuz its beyond your control.
A great season is only great if you win something. Just performing well means nothing cuz you can never guarantee that it'll carry over to the next season.
I dont want to sound arrogant or anything but we've won the league many times in recent years, and have lost it a couple of times as well. So most of our fans have a better idea of when not to overestimate certain positives like the ones you mentioned or when not to take things for granted. We know we can still lose the title this year and it still worries me that if we lose today, theres a good chance we can lose again before you kick off, and then it's really over for us. If I was as positive as you, I'd have said the title's in the bag right now. But football's a funny game. Last year we were a much stronger side in terms of our performance yet it was this season where we broke most of our records.

It's a lot to shout about. Beating you and Chelsea, gives us the confidence to know that we can beat you again. That's huge. The belief, the winning mentality. Why couldn't we beat you earlier? We'd never managed before. But now we have, and we can go out with confidence against you.
We might not have as many comebacks like this season. But it's given us the confidence to know that we can make comebacks. It's another mental hurdle we've overcome. Now teams will know, they might have scored the winner in the 90th minute, but by the time it's the 94th, we'd already have equalized, and be pushing for a winner. Fuck me, you can think you have one foot in the CL semi final by scoring 3 goals at Anfield, yet in the next game, you'll be defending like your life depends on it, because we'll be looking for the goal that takes us through in the 90th. We're still the most feared team in Europe. Ask the Porto player, who, when asked his thoughts about the United game, said "Hey it could have been worse, it could have been Liverpool". Tell me that counts for nothing?
Fuck the 'defensive team' crap. We've outscored you, and by a margin. And without our two best attackers starting the majority of the games. The unfashionable Dirk Kuyt's out scored Rooney, the inconsistent Benayoun has been consistently destroying teams. Torres is near top of the goal scoring chart, despite starting half the games the other players started. Xabi Alonso showed he's the best midfielder in the country. Gerrard is having another amazing season. There's unity in this team, that's never been seen before. They're all behind the manager, who now has full control over footballing matters. No more Rick Parry to fuck up. Insua's proving to be an absolute gem, Ngog is scoring whenever he plays a game, we're in another youth cup final.
That counts for nothing, eh?
Little fact. All teams that have won the league in the PL era, have finished 2nd the previous season. Yup, the first had to challenge for the title, get the experience, and then they went onto win the league. You don't go from 4th to 1st in a season. Chelsea had to challenge Arsenal, Arsenal had to challenge you lot, Blackburn had to challenge you, and you had to challenge Leeds. We challenged you this season, and gave you a mauling at your own place. Counts for nothing, that?
United fans can glee at the possibility for 18-4 this season, and fuck it, you deserve it. But know that, Liverpool are right on your tails, and waiting to pounce. And they know how to do that now. And they've got the players do that. And they'll go out, and get even better players. Ferguson's time is about to end. Rafa's time is just beginning.
PS Sorry for the rant![]()
