Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

Good result, Home game will be better on the eye. Madrid will attack and at home Liverpool will look for one to kill of the game. Still Close but Liverpool are easily the favourates

Re: Liverpool Thread

Good win last night, typical Pool performance IMO. Made Madrid look crap, something Pool are amazing at. Tie is done and dusted IMO. Real clearly had no way to break through Pool's discipline. Credit has to go to Rafa, say what you want about the man, but he can turn any football match into a tactical chess game, which is a battlefield he can often win on.

They say fortune favours the brave, but I'd argue in CL football at the moment the opposite is true. Regimented, zonal play, closing down and not over-committing men to attack is the way to go. Almost every team has adopted this strategy, because it works so well.

Sucks for us hoping for some football though!

Good post from one of the United fans who aren't wearing those Utd-Red tinted glasses :)

Yep, the way Liverpool set up reminds me of the way Arsenal played in 2006, when they reached the final. If the players are disciplined enough, then this style of setup works very effectively in the European game.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Well one goal from them @ anfield then it turns the tie around. A 1-0 away lead isn't really something that's done and dusted.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Oh don't get us wrong, we're estatic with a 1-0 away lead going to Anfield.

But sometimes, the ball is round .. yada yada yada (i'll spare you my speech :P) .. though 1 away goal is sealed, there's still 90 minutes of football where Real, in their day, can score 5 goals in one half.

Optimistic but still a long way to go.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I really don't think much of all this european tie myths that fly about.

Like playing at Home in the 2nd leg, it isn't always an advantage, its not a given. You still have to go out on the pitch and do the business. Pressure gets to teams.

United are happy with 0-0 away to Inter, but now only Inter can get an away goal, however, I can't see Inter getting anything from OT. Liverpool will be happy with the single away goal, but all it takes is a bit of magic from real, or a counter because the home team gets too excited and they are back in it.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I'm willing to take a bet on the scenario that Liverpool always find themselves in whilst playing in Europe.

Real will score in the first half (sounds like a stretch but it has to happen), and they'll be pressing for another for most of the game then around the 85 minute mark, Gerrard will pop up with a strike from outside the box, and lo and behold you're through and Gerrard is your saviour and the best player ever once again.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Also the fact your just a better team than Real. The only way Real can win IMO is if someone like Robben put in a performance like Zidane V Brazil.

Or he'll hit the floor for a very debateable foul which will lead to the winning freekick/penalty.

I am not surprised if that were to happen, then Robben etc will do a   :R1   at the ref. And when Skrtel tried to pull Robben away, he'll just dive to the ground moaning .. uh uh he dislocated my shoulder!!!

Re: Liverpool Thread

something I found amusing:

...Or Not With Their Twelfth Man
LFC this season:

Home W7, D6 = 27 points Away W8 D4 = 28 points.
CL: PSV 1-3, Marseille 1-2, Atheltico 1-1, and of course Real 0-1.

Just wondering who the 12th Man at Anfield is. And is he related to Dossena/Lucas?

Re: Liverpool Thread

Guess Rafa is staying then!

That's the good news.
Bad news is that if Rafa doesn't win the league next year (or the year after etc) he'll have no one else to blame.

Re: Liverpool Thread

So Parry goes - a lot of people will support that move but the question is who the hell will be in charge when he goes - the two feuding Yanks certainly won't be working together.

Parry has missed opportunities to move ahead commercially and to develop the name further worldwide, particularly in Asia like Madrid and United. One only has to look across Asia to see Megastores, soccer schools etc with the United name, despite LFC having a major support there since the 80s to see that LFC is well behind when it comes to a global commercial presence.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Possibly the best thing to have happened to us in YEARS :D

Apparantly Brian Barwick is the man who will replace him ... not too happy about him either to be honest but he'll get a fair chance from me.

Re: Liverpool Thread

We were crap before Benitez came, now we are competing for the top honours and not just the Uefa and Worthington Cup.

I really don't get ya.... I can see why people might think he's taken us as far as we can go, but the only thing he is missing is the abillity to compete for the top, top players. IMO we are two top attackers away from domination. Our Spine can more than compete with every club on the planet. We are currently the hardest team in the country to beat ffs! Looking at the league tables around the world, you could also say Europe.

Not sure about Parry going. Out of the three clowns, he's the third I'd give the axe too. We need someone better in place, I've never liked Barwick. Parry at the very least is a fan of the club and has shared in some special moments with rafa and the players, he was quite emotional about his decision.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Because you'll never win the league under him. He's known for buying average players except for Torres. You HAVE spent near enough as much as us in net spending over the last 10 years except we buy 2-3 potential stars and Rafa buys 11 Spanish rejects.

He tried to flog Alonso for Barry, You lot also claim to say that the Owners don't give Rafa money even after they've broken your transfer record twice with Keane and Torres.

He's good in the cups though! :))

Re: Liverpool Thread

Personally I think Parry is responsible for rather slack transfer dealings over the years, where we have paid over the odds for several players and let go others at large losses/under their real value. McManaman's and Mickey O's transfers a case in point. Ultimately, I think Robbie Keane's 5m overpriced transfer, allegedly Parry's buy did for him, as well as the pressure from Hicks wanting him gone after Hicks' outburst last April and our failure to make any decent Man U type impression commercially in the Far East. Parry also holds a lot of responsibility for the dithering over the DIC takeover and quickly, some say hastily, swapping to Hicks/Gillett.

There is one thing I am thankful for though - he didn't approve the Barry deal and didn't sell Benayoun and Alonso to pay for it. Alonso is SOOOOOO missed when he's not there and Benayoun supplies something different.

we might have spent near enough to the same over the last few years, but look at our squad before Rafa came compared to yours that season! We needed a massive clearout and new faces.

In the end we've spent that net amout on bringing in a lot more players. This is why Parry is a fool. He's will to give 30m for four better than average players, but not to secure a truly world class player or two top quality players!

Re: Liverpool Thread

You're saying that yet you were able to secure the Torres deal just fine.
I guess we'll never really know unless you ask the people in question but you can't help but assume Rafa was to blame when you look at the people he brought in and what their nationalities are.

Re: Liverpool Thread

:DD Great news RAFA STAYS

KRAP FOREVER

Careful what you wish for.

When Ferguson goes, we'll have the best manager in the league. If Rafa left, we'd never be able to replace him with a manager as good.

The FACT is, and it's been proved over the years, and with our league form, we're in the Top 3 teams of Europe at the moment. The only shame is one of them is in our league. And at our very best we can beat Barcelona and United (as we already have).

We were not even in the Top 10 when Rafa came.

He's not been brilliant in the transfer market, but he's still been bloody good. Only Torres? What about Alonso? Alonso for 10 fuckin million. That's a steal if there was ever one. Mascherano, Reina, Skrtel, Agger, Benayoun?

British media (and the vast majority of fans) have no clue how good Benitez is. He's in the very top echelon of managers. Just the fact that he's 'Spanish', has the audacity to challenge Ferguson, not exactly a flair manager and a little overweight, people consider him a 'lucky' manager. Bullshit. Not one manager in the world I'd have over Rafa. The fact that's conjured up a title challenge with all the bullshit that's going around in the background is a minor miracle.
