Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

And for supposed title hopefuls, to go defensive and try not to concede against Villa (admittedly a very decent side, but still) is absolutely criminal.

Eh? For most of the match Liverpool had possesion and were trying to attack, while Villa sat back and tried to counter/longball with carew and gabby/young.

Anyway, poor performance although having Ngog on his own upfront didnt help. Once Keane linked up with him we looked more "dangerous" but even then it was poor. Hopefully the Reire deal will go through, otherwise we're pretty f#$ked against teams with a decent defense/midfield, ala Villa. No wide play whatsoever, and hardly any players that can beat a man. Has Pennant gone so bad that he's useless against mediocre prem teams? Havent seen him for ages, surely he's a decent sub when the backs are tiring.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I'm sorry, but playing one striker is a defensive move and it seems Rafa is determined on keeping other teams out rather than attacking.

Regardless of whether you had more possession or not, Robbie Keane spent half the game way out on the left side of the pitch, meaning he couldn't support the striker, and thats a defensive aspect of Rafa's system.

Playing one striker doesn't work when you're trying to win titles.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Torres was a big loss (Hopefully he's out for the United match :DD) but you were poor generally today, didnt have the urgency IMO. Benitez tries to be to tactical in the PL.

I'd much rather we played the lone striker system we played at the end of last season, than the mess that is this season.

And this is what?;

--------Tevez--------
Giggs---rooney--ronaldo

vs

--------Torres---------
keane----lucas-----kuyt

Had Gerrard or Babel been (match)fit the system is very much like utd's. Its just a shame we have Kuyt instead of Ronaldo . It's more based on personel then formation. After all, we had 2,5 strikers on the pitch yesterday, guess who counts as half .

Tbh, I dont think you can say this/that formation is defensive/attacking without seeing how the match play's out. By that reasoning Villa had more attacking "ambition" with 2 central attackers but spent most of the match countering and cornering. Hardly going out to attack is it, even moreso when they are at home? So far the difference Ive seen is that instead of sitting back more Liverpool are trying to make the play, they are doing crap, but atleast they are trying. Which is the biggest difference from the last couple of seasons. Still think we lack width/speed though.

Playing one striker doesn't work when you're trying to win titles.

Eh? Chelsea?

Re: Liverpool Thread

The 4-2-3-1 we played last season with Torres up front as a lone striker, was far more attacking than the 4-4-2 we're playing this season.

I laugh when anyone comes up with the cliche "You need to play two strikers, one striker is far too defensive." That's what Andy Gray or Steve McMahon would say.

Liverpool: Riera delay over Finnan talks

Deadline day update: 10:40 BST

The deal taking Albert Riera from Espanyol to Liverpool has been agreed, however the transfer has not yet been completely finalised - and many readers have been contacting us asking for an explanation.

The delay in completion has been caused by Espanyol 's desire for Steve Finnan to be included in the deal: the Barcelona club are looking for a replacement for Zabaleta, who is on his way to Manchester City.

There is currently a disagreement over Liverpool's evaluation of the Republic of Ireland full back and, clearly, the player will also have to agree to the move and a wage package with Espanyol.

The Riera deal is not dependent upon Finnan joining Espanyol - it simply explains the current delay in the transfer being confirmed - and the signing should still be completed before the transfer window closes at midnight this evening (Monday).

and

1155: LIVERPOOL SIGNING
The Premier League club have signed Brazilian Vito Flora on a free transfer from Botafogo. The 18-year-old holds an Italian holds an Italian passport and the necessary international clearance has been received.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Finnan to Espanyol is official, Riera should be given the all clear to join now.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Just about to mention that hehehe :)

1612: HOLA ESPANYOL
Liverpool full-back Steve Finnan has signed for Spanish side Espanyol on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee. We have yet to hear that Albert Riera has completed his move.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Hmm mixed day really. Good to get Riera in, more than happy to see Voronin leave, and not sure how I feel about Finnan leaving.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Arby's been shaky the past games so would've been nice to see Finnan slot in there.

The thing that worries me the most is OFFENCE. We almost offer nothing against Villa. And again I wonder, would Riera be able to play WITHOUT any defending to do? That won't happen when Rafa's around.

EDIT:
Quaresma moved to Inter for 19.75 million pound .. thank lord for that.

Re: Liverpool Thread

He'll have to do far less defending in a 4-2-3-1. He'll do well I think.

This is what we eventually got. Mainly 4-2-3-1

Reina/Cavalieri

Arbeloa/Degen Carra/Hyypia Agger/Skrtel Dossena/Aurelio

Masch/Plessis Alonso/Lucas

Gerrard/Kuyt Keane/Yossi Riera/Babel

Torres/Ngog

You can add El Zhar, Insua, Nemeth, Darby, Spearing into the mix as well. That's a pretty good squad IMO. The only real weak position IMO, is right back, but hopefully, Degen can step up, or Darby makes the position his own.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Hmmm, not sure what to make of our squad atm.

Still think we need a VDV/Diego type in there aswell to add strength, particularly if we play the 4-2-3-1 formation.

But we just don't have the money, and our RB position is far too weak.

On paper, that squad looks shit-hot.

EDIT: assuming Rafa plays the guys in bold and doesn't stick Keane on the left-wing or Benayoun in goal.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Welcome, just saw a replay of last year's 3-0 win @ Marseille, wonder what made us regress to our current situation as the tactics appears the same (Torres, Benny, Gerrard, Masch and Kewell, who played really2 well) .. Wonder goal by Torres for those who remembers :)
