Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

Parry says 'Watch this space' regarding Riera transfer.

Still can't quiet get excited by this transfer. This is Rafa's 3rd choice left side signing.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Didn't realise the draw was today, thought it would be tommorow. Not sure about the draw, it's a bit boring playing the same teams again. Atletico could be quite dangerous actually, they put 4 past shalke who aren't too shabby.

I guess the good thing is the other 3 are pretty equal meaning they will hopefully take a lot of points off each other keeping them all close together. If Liverpool have 2/3 wins then they should be through.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Should have put money on us getting Athletico, as soon as I saw their impressive result the other day. Luis coming back, should be some great games!

PSV, not to concerned about them, we know all about them. Marseille, tricky but they've lost Nasri and a few other players.

Oh and teams don't deserve to go through if they don't score.

Re: Liverpool Thread

IMO we should get better in terms of playing like in preseason match against Lazio and it should be ok,

I think the hardest match will be against Atletico away... and Marseille could be prepared for revenge...remember they won last year on Anfield...

so it will be though matches away and home...

but we should go to the next round either with Atletico or Marseille..

i think we know PSV very good.. but we can beat them or better we should beat them anytime..

YNWA guys!!

Re: Liverpool Thread

The troubled regime of Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr at Liverpool suffered another severe blow last night when it emerged that they are preparing to postpone construction of the club's new stadium because of difficulties raising the funds in an unforgiving financial market.

Hicks and Gillett had hoped that the building of a 60,000-capacity stadium on the site at Stanley Park, barely a quarter of a mile from the club's Anfield home, would start within weeks, dispelling some of the concerns about their ability to drive Liverpool forward. But their apparent failure to do so casts further doubt about their credibility as owners, increasing the pressure on them to sell to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai.

The American tycoons will play down the significance of this latest setback, saying that the market conditions are not favourable for such large-scale borrowing, but, 18 months after they bought the club, pledging that building would start “within weeks”, it is another embarrassment that they could do without. According to one source, they were recently told by the Royal Bank of Scotland that they could borrow the money required for the £350million project on the condition that they could put up £200million in guarantees, but they have been unable to do so.

The Hicks-Gillett regime has appeared doomed since it emerged that they had invited Dubai International Capital (DIC), the private-equity investment arm of the Dubai Government, to buy a minority stake last October. Hicks blocked DIC's bid to buy the club for £400million earlier this year, but the Dubai interest remains, albeit now presented as a consortium headed by Sheikh Mohammed, rather than under the DIC banner. The Dubai consortium still expects Hicks and Gillett, whose relationship remains tense, to return to sell within months, aware that their most recent refinancing package is up for renewal in January, albeit with the option of a six-month extension.

On the pitch, Liverpool's results so far this season have been positive enough - two wins out of two in the Barclays Premier League and progression to the Champions League group stage - but their performances have not. Rafael Benítez, the manager, has expressed overall disappointment and he may be particularly concerned at teething problems with the new strike partnership of Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane.

Another worry is the continuing lack of quality in wide areas, which should be resolved by the arrival of Albert Riera from Espanyol. However, that £8.5million deal had still to be finalised last night, meaning that Liverpool are likely to travel to Aston Villa without him on Sunday.

Dirk Kuyt, who secured their Champions League place on Wednesday night by scoring the only goal of the qualifying tie against Standard Liège in stoppage time at Anfield, admitted that Liverpool have flattered to deceive. “We have had a lot of luck,” the forward said. “We have to improve and it has to happen quickly.”

Liverpool paid a combined £40million for Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane, who arrived from Tottenham Hotspur this summer. So far, neither have matched their form of last season.

Didnt realise there were so many injuries in the match.

Doesnt surprise me about the stadium. Tbh I don't care, just waiting for them to p!$$ off.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Athletico will be a tough game, I'd put money on either Torres or LG getting the winners as well.

I dont blame you, we turned him down a couple of years ago for 3m after he had been on loan, hes just not got the pace or the workrate for the premiership, Musampa was far the better player out of the two, will be a complete waste of money.

To be fair, he's much, much better now than he was at City. He's a very good player and still better than anyone we've got out wide.

My main problem is not about the player himself, but the fact that he's Rafa's 3rd choice.

I do think he'll do well here. Think of him as a Spanish Malouda. Very technical, decent pace, powerful, and great work rate. It's up to Rafa to take him to the next level now. He's done it before with Torres, Vicente, Aimar before. It'll be interesting what he managed to do with Riera.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I'm guessing Barry was your 1st but who was the 2nd? (Also Rafa was looking to sign Barry to play outwide :SS)

Barry was Rafa's choice to replace Alonso.

For left wing, his choices were David Silva, Steward Downing, and Albert Riera, in that order.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Silva isn't really an option after Keane's acquisition, while Downing would've been a great buy but wonder if money's the problem? Heard Riera's deal would've been 10+ million but now we're getting for for 8 mil so great deal (unless he trips himself just before the medical). Downing hasn't got the pace either so if what I heard about Riera's true, then he's the spanish equivalent of Downing without Premiership experience. Not bad IMO.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I'm thinking about getting a ticket for the match vs Marseille at Anfield, it's not sure for the moment but :
- What should I do as a foreign buyer ?
- What's the price ?

Was Silva really first choice? There were never any bids or reports, just speculation, but it was all pretty clear that he was staying, so was David Villa.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Thats what I thought Silva seemed for like a Fantasy team signing. (Was never going to happen) I don't even think you were interested in Downing either, to be interested in someone there has to be major speculation or a bid and neither was the case with those two. Benitez needs to find a formation and players to fit into it. I currently dont think he could name your best formation and the players that he would want/have filling them.

We were definitely interested in Silva. Our chief scout knows Silva from way back.

Also, we were 100% interested in Downing. Apparently, we talked to him after the Boro game last week, and promised to make a bid. But we couldn't match Boro's price.

It's way too early to judge us. Mascherano coming back will make a HUGE difference. Our wingers will be able to play much higher up, our full backs will have more freedom to attack, Xabi and Gerrard will have license to do the creative work, as Masch will hold, and shape the midfield.

I bet Ferguson couldn't name his best formation either. That concept is outdated. You need to use 4-3-3, 4-4-2 etc in different situations.

I'm getting worried about the signing though. It should be announced by now.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Calm Down, Calm Down ;)

Masherano back will be brilliant, just a shame Gerrard is out for a while because Jimmy would bring the best out of Stevie.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Actually scratch that, lots of rumours that the yanks have pulled the plug on the Riera deal. FFS!

If its true, Rafa will walk IMO.

Lets hope it means they are selling up, what with the suspension of the stadium that could well be true.

Re: Liverpool Thread

They've pulled the plug?!

If that's true, they can fuck right off. I'm sick to death of all this shit now. It's become a bloody soap opera and it's a joke.

You may have been "Interested" in both but you as you just said you never had the money to purchase Silva and in the end that proved the same case with Downing so they were fantasy signings as they were out of reach.

I never doubted you lot and Im sure Masch will improve you lot in the middle but thats not even been your weak point at the moment its been width and Im sure SAF could easily name his best side it would Probably be this.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Can someone please tell me, I seemed to have forgotten his name, apparently we signed this dead hard, Italian, marauding left back, who bombs on at any given chance, is a real tough tackler and and can produce a little bit of skill and cross? I mean we have this guy there at the moment called Dossena? But I dont think thats who we signed?

Every LFC Game this season has been awful. Why cant Benitez see that we are crying out for two wingers. James fucking Milner and Shaun Wright Phillips would have been awesome on the wings.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Meh, very average performance.

I guess Rafa's happy though. He'll bring on Babel and El Zhar around the 70 min, and bombard Villa with pace. Hopefully we can nick a goal then.

And Dossena needs to attack more!

Re: Liverpool Thread

What happened to Torres? Hopefully he's okay...

Dire performance from what I've seen, both sides stifling the play. At some point Liverpool are going to have to come good, they can't continue to nick goals int he last 10 for the whole season. Can they...?

Re: Liverpool Thread

This is just funny.

Rafa just can't admit his one striker system doesn't work.

And for supposed title hopefuls, to go defensive and try not to concede against Villa (admittedly a very decent side, but still) is absolutely criminal.

Useless, fat waiter.
