Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

IMO, in terms of an EPL challenge, Keane's a proven commodity so in this front we have boosted our chances tremendously compared to if we bought Villa. We don't know what Keane's going to bring for the Champions League, but he works his magic in the area we need better players to perform the most.

And he's getting the no 7 shirt.

Now where was that Barry transfer date? :)

Re: Liverpool Thread

Great signing .. dont know about 20 mill pounds tho..

finally some competent strikers at the club

Re: Liverpool Thread

I think the fee is too much for a 28 year old, 3 years he'll give you at the top level. Similar situation with us and Berba i think the 30M region is too much for Berba but i think his style of play will allow him to play at the top level a lot longer than others.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Keane is Kuyt but a little weaker/shorter, but with more pace, more skill, more creativity and a better eye for goal.

In other words, they're nothing alike. :P

He's really intelligent on the ball. Players like him remain top level players for longer. I think he's a fantastic signing and I think he'll fit right in and be amongst the goals.

Spending that much means he's a player for the first team, so no doubt Rafa plans to be more attack minded next season.

I do think we need a good wide midfielder. If we were to sign one, I'd genuinely be optimistic for the upcoming season.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Good signing IMO. Pool lack depth up front, and Robbie adds a very versatile weapon to Rafa's arsenal. Prices are no longer inflated, they're just nuts, but they're nuts for everyone so it all balances out :)

Is it your year?

Well his mental attributes and stamina are exactly the same.

So its an upgrade on Kuyt.

Not worried about the 20m, we were always moaning about not paying the extra 3-4m to land a player. Prices are mental these days anyway.

Re: Liverpool Thread

We sold Crouch for what, 11M in his final year of contract. And he's only a few months younger than Keane. If he can replicate his partnership with Berbatov here with Torres, 18M will be bargain. Not bothered about his age. He's a player in his prime, and will perform here and now. And we have his long term replacement already at the club.

Oh, I'd much rather have Keane than Villa. He'd be a far more natural partner for Torres.

Oh, and our greatest ever No. 7 was 27 when we signed him. And for a record fee.

Re: Liverpool Thread

FERNANDO TORRES has already taken Liverpool's new French teenage striker David Ngog under his wing.

Ngog, 19, joined the club for £1.5million from Paris St Germain last week, and could well make his debut in tomorrow's friendly at Villarreal - a match that may also see the first appearance of Robbie Keane in a Liverpool shirt.

Ngog reveals that Anfield hero Torres and French legend Thierry Henry are his role-models.

Torres has already made sure the youngster is settling into life at Melwood, with an offer of advice and help.

Ngog said: "I am obviously looking forward to playing and training with a striker of his quality.

"To have someone like that who I can learn from will be great for me. I have already trained with Fernando and he has told me that if there is anything I need, I only have to ask.

"He is such a big star and it's nice that he took the time, but all the players have been similar - including Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. But Torres is one of my role models."

Another of the forward's idols is Henry, who after an initial settling-in period went on to be one of the Premier League's finest-ever imports.

Ngog said: "I know Henry made a massive impact in England, but I know it will not be easy for me to do the same.

"But I am still young. The French league is very good, they have good defenders there. But in England it is quicker, more intense; it impacts upon you more, physically.

"My qualities are that I am tall and quick, and technically good on the ball, but I still have to adapt to the physical side of the English game. Maybe I can be more aggressive."

He added: "I am really looking forward to wearing the shirt for the first time.

"Liverpool were my English team - I supported PSG in France - and I love this club. I will do my best to prove myself here and to help the team win matches."

There we go, Ngog's qualities ;))

Re: Liverpool Thread

Asked at his unveiling this morning if he thought a title-winner's medal was realistic, Keane replied: "I certainly do think we can challenge Manchester United and Chelsea.

"If you look at the squad of players that were already here, along with the addition of a few more, then there is no reason we shouldn't be challenging for the Premier League and other trophies.

Keane mentions us bringing in a "few more" players. I'm pretty sure Rafa would've had to tell Keane his plans while they were at negotiations so maybe we'll see more players coming in. I imagined Keane and maybe Barry would've been our last signings.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

“We now have several options in attack. We can play Keane with Torres, Gerrard can play like he did last season, and there is also Kuyt, Babel, Ngog and Voronin,

Ngog getting mentioned ahead of Voronin

Re: Liverpool Thread

Rafa, I'll see if I can find the link, I think it was on icLiverpool though.

Benitez today welcomed the arrival of his latest signing and backed him to deliver in the Premier League.

He said: “Robbie is a very good player who is proven in the Premier League. He is a good professional, with a good mentality and everyone at the club is glad to have Robbie Keane in the squad.

“We now have several options in attack. We can play Keane with Torres, Gerrard can play like he did last season, and there is also Kuyt, Babel, Ngog and Voronin,

“The challenge to all of them is to work hard and to show they deserve a place in the team.

“Robbie has played on the right for Tottenham but I know he prefers to play up front. The important thing is he is a clever player and that makes it easy for the manager.”

If we get Downing or antoher wing player the team is perfect

Re: Liverpool Thread

Still need a quality wide man if you want the league, I think you'll run us lot closer this year but not that close if im honest but i can see you lot finishing 3rd.

Maybe Rafa's idea is not to play wide men at all, and bringing width from full backs.

Re: Liverpool Thread

4-3-3? I could see that working but you would have problems with your LB position.

------------Reina-------------
Degan-Carragher--Agger--Dossena
-----------Mascherano---------
------Barry-------Gerrard----
----Keane--Torres--Babel---

Something like that? Hmmm....not bad but i still have my doubts. :))
