This is the difference. We need a right back, Chelsea need a right back. Both are interested in Bosingwa. But Chelsea, before the season is over, before anyone can act, spend 16M on Bosingwa. Straight. If Rafa were to spend that much, that would be a large portion of his total summer budget.

United will do the same with Lahm.

Which leaves Alves, a player who could have been our 2 seasons ago, if we had the cash. But he'll cost 20M, and go to Barcelona. And we'll be signing a bosman right back from a mid table Bundesliga team.

And then Rafa should be sacked for not winning the title next season....

Under these circumstances, I am hoping we can get a swap deal from Portsmouth for Glen Johnson, if they really want Crouchy.

Put yourself in a neutral's perspective for one moment.

If Liverpool and Chelsea came calling who would you join? The money is going to be better at Chelsea, it's a fashionable place to live and they have won/challenged the last four titles. Liverpool once again looked good but NOT title contenders this year despite spending over £30 million. The excuses need to end here mate. :)

I do agree that it's frustrating the way Chelsea can snap up players with so much ease though but it's not like our clubs aren't given any money spend is it? It's all about spending well though.

And he know he will have a bloody big possibility of sitting in the bench full of great players because Grant can only play 11 players at one time, while in Liverpool he will be starting. *Unless Rafa comes up with a crazy rotation plan next season*

I think both Plan M and Koolaje have good points. Players are going to be lured by big wages, London and playing with the big names at Chelsea, but are they going to start many games?

I guess it depends on the player, whether they're in it for the money (Eto'o) or just want to play football (Crouch?).

That's not the point though is it. There are no excuses. We're not good enough, it's as simple as that.

But the point is that, at this moment, we don't even have a chance to improve the way Chelsea (or United) snap up players. Chelsea have gone and bought Bosingwa. United will do the same with Lahm. We'll end up with Degen, simply because we have been outpriced on both players. How is it then reasonable to expect us to win the title. Sure, we spent 40M last summer. United spent the exact same despite finishing 20 points ahead. So, where's the room for immediate improvement. Sure, Babel and Lucas might turn out to be world beaters in a few years. But there is very little room for immediate improvement next season.

Yet, we'll see next August, people saying it's time for Rafa to deliver the title otherwise he will be sacked.

Yeah it's a sin Koolaje but he made his bed, now he's gotta lay in it. The £££ is too much of a tempatation for footballers these days. What happened to pride?

Thats bollox Plan M, the difference between Chelsea and Liverpool isn't that big at ALL.

Liverpool has far more pedigree, allure and history behind.Yes our playing staff might not match Chelsea's, but isn't that the point in going for a player like that anyway?:brick::brick

Sorry mate but the days of people going to clubs for their past achievements etc are long gone its all about who gives the biggest wage packet and who wins the trophies.

Peter, do you really think Bosingwa cares that Liverpool won the FA Cup over two years ago? Or will he care more about living in a classy part of London, earning shit loads of money at the team who have been runners up in the league for the last two seasons?

But that's not the point. Bosingwa will never get the chance to choose between Chelsea and Liverpool, because Chelsea will simply outprice Liverpool every time they go for the same player. Liverpool will never be able to match United or Chelsea when it comes to prices in the transfer market.

Exactly, Boswinga can't chose Liverpool if the club doesn't accept the bid.

And yes Plan M, there are players these days who care more about their pay packet and couldn't care less if they play infront of a unfull stadium., but they aren't all like that.

But I don't really want players like that at my club anyway.

I imagine Inter offered Lucas more money than we offered him ...

And Torres has had many opportunities to move abroad, and to England more specifically, but only moved to us because of his love for the club.

Pride still exists :)

I dunno about Lucas cause he was contracted to you lot when Inter offered right? While we all know the Torres story and yes he is one of the very few ones that would make that decision.

I'm hoping that you don't tag Boswinga as THOSE players directly, things maybe different in the negotiating table you know?

By the way, if we really look only for players that have their hearts on Liverpool, even before they're brought in, we might not have the players we have today. It is a good thing to have, pride, but can't make it a compulsory.

Nope, Lucas was offered contracts by quite a few clubs before signing for us he said. Although the only club he mentioned by name was Inter although there were Spanish clubs in there as well.

Spanish reports claim that Liverpool have rejected a huge bid from Chelsea for Fernando Torres.

Radio Marca report that Roman Abramovich lodged a cheeky 50million euros (£40million) offer for Torres - who has shone on his debut season in England.

Liverpool are believed to have rejected the offer out of hand and did not discuss any possible deal as they have no intention whatsoever of selling the Spanish striker.

It is also claimed that Avram Grant tried to use his friendship with Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun to make it known to Torres, Chelsea's admiration.

However, Torres - who is readying himself to play a pivotal role for Spain at Euro 2008, is more than happy with life at Anfield and has no intentions of quitting less than 12 months into his Liverpool career.

Benítez waits on Fifa before making market moves

Rafael Benítez last night admitted that he will not finalise his summer transfer plans until Fifa has taken its decision over introducing the 6+5 rule. The Liverpool manager has put Jermaine Pennant and Peter Crouch up for sale during the transfer window as he seeks to raise funds for team strengthening. But the values of both players could soar overnight as Fifa takes a vote that could change the face of football across the globe.

Fifa's president, Sepp Blatter, has proposed to his organisation's congress a regulation stipulating that every team must field six starting players eligible to represent the country they play in. The matter will be put to a vote on May 29 and 30.

If Blatter's plan is passed then Englishmen such as Pennant and Crouch - as well as Benítez's England-international targets Gareth Barry, of Aston Villa, and Blackburn Rovers' David Bentley - would become even more coveted commodities.

"We know what are the rules and we will try to do things whatever happens with Fifa," said Benítez. "Crouch and Pennant are under contract and they are our players. We are waiting now. We know they have been playing well and a lot of clubs are interested in them so we will wait and see. But they are under contract."

Both Crouch and Pennant were left out of Liverpool's 2-0 last-day win at Tottenham Hotspur, with Benítez describing the move as "a tactical decision". But Liverpool would be among the most heavily affected teams in the Premier League if the move is passed by Fifa. Liverpool started 42 matches with either only one or two English-qualified players this season, starting with three 17 times and with four on only one occasion.

"I feel the key is for the fans to see the best players on the pitch," said Benítez. "It is clear - in the past you would talk about a lot of local players but all the teams want to sign players and the best players come from all over the world."

I'd prefer the rule to go through (even though it'd hit Liverpool VERY VERY hard) as I'd like to see English (well, whichever country) players to come through instead of relying on foreign players.

It'd also reduce the amount of average players brought in. I'm looking at you Traore, Dundee, Meijer etc.

Players with pride still exist. Kaka, Pato and Gourcuff chose us over Chelsea, Real Madrid and Arsenal because of the history behind Milan. Freddy Adu also chose DC United and rejected Inter, Barcelona and Real Madrid, and they offered almost 10x more than DC United.

Plan M, the Shevchenko transfer was more complicated than just the money.

Few months before the whole rumor even started there were photos and clips of Shevchenko and Ancelotti arguing, then speculation rose about their relationship etc. In the same time he was also good friends with Abramovic, due to their background. Milan and Abramovic also have a very good relationship - Crespo free loan, treating Robben at MilanLab etc. Coincidentally Shevchenko also had a kid around that period and his wife was saying to the media how she wanted her kids to learn English and all that stuff so Milan met and reached an agreement with Chelsea to transfer him, and thats how we let him go. But it was a good piece of business since Sheva was aging and getting slower. We could match the wage Shevchenko wanted, but that wasnt the issue.

I had heard that Shevchenko came in becoz his wife and Roman's wife are very good friends even though Mourinho did not want him. What a Reason!!

Hopefully not, and I think the rumor has died down. :D But reports were saying we'd only take him if Chelsea let us loan him for free, which would be a bargain.
