Re: Liverpool Thread

I can't see Villa accepting anywhere near £10m, £15m at least.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Well if Barry is indeed Rafa's target (no official quotes just yet), Alonso's doomed. Barry and Masch are similar position .. no?

Mancini? No way. He's too old for Rafa.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Rafa Benitez looking to bounce back after Chelsea defeat
By David Maddock 2/05/2008

Rafael Benitez is already plotting fresh glory for Liverpool, despite criticism of his decision making in the Champions League semi-final.

In particular, fans have questioned why Fernando Torres was taken off but Peter Crouch then ignored, especially as Anfield boss Benitez had earlier used Jermaine Pennant off the bench.

Torres seemed particularly upset to be replaced in extra time with Liverpool trailing and needing a goal to reach the final instead of Chelsea.

Benitez later suggested the striker had hamstring trouble, but last night refused to dwell on Liverpool's failure to reach a third Champions League Final in four years, and instead focused on the work required to take the team to the next level. That means turning to the transfer market.

"Sometimes signing just one player can make a massive difference, sometimes you might need four or five players, but we will be working hard now to build the squad and improve," said Benitez.

He has calculated he will need in excess of £30million to spend in the summer, and believes he has the backing of co-owner Tom Hicks to make the changes required.

Several established players are likely to be sold to raise funds to bring in new faces.

Xabi Alonso could be the biggest name out, with Barcelona already tracking the Spain international with a view to a £9m offer. Benitez has already made inquiries about replacing him with Aston Villa's Gareth Barry, who would cost about £15m.

There has been interest in Crouch from Manchester City and Newcastle. He would command a fee of about £8m, the same as keeper Scott Carson, who is on loan at Villa.

John Arne Riise, Pennant, and perhaps Sami Hyypia could also be released to raise a further £10m, leaving Benitez with as much as £50m in total to realise his ambition of turning Liverpool into title challengers.

Wigan's £8m-rated Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia is another potential target.

His agent Diego Herrera said: "Manchester United and Liverpool have been following him for months. But he will not come cheap."

And after tailing him for two years, Benitez may finally land Sevilla defender Daniel Alves for £20m.

Alves :DUMMY:

Re: Liverpool Thread

Hyppia? He's only just signed a one-year deal, he's hardly going to sell him

Re: Liverpool Thread

Hyypia should be given some sought of coaching role
for next season seeing as Agger will be back.(touch wood)

Not quite, Masch is better at defensive duties. Barry is a solid
player but a bit of a step down from Alonso.

Barry is much more mobile than Alonso though. Attacks a lot more.

£20M for a full back, the world's gone mad...

Re: Liverpool Thread

He likes them young. :DUMMY:

Yeap if you prefer to say it that way ..... ;))

Anyway, I think Barry's a good option with the way he has worked together with Gerrard for England. Especially if somehow FIFA can overcome EU's protest about a quota on foreign players in the EPL, England players would have their price sky-rocketed among the premier leaguer clubs.

So buying English now rather than later seems to be a good option, Agbonlahor is also another Kuyt in the making *though Villa fans might disagree* SWP is also another potential .. but I don't think he's too much an upgrade from Pennant.

Is there the next Rooney out there? :w00t:

Never seen him play, have you? :-pp

No and I would assume he's World Class that's even better than Cashley and Bridge combined :)

I'd rather have SWP or Lennon than Pennant to be honest.

Ah Lennon, almost forgot about him, yes he's doing well and a type of player that brings the crowd to their feet only to be disappointed by the end product :DD He'll improve I guess he's only 19?

As I said, they're better but not by far I think.

Re: Liverpool Thread

looks like you will break the bank to get barry!
And why not!
He is an excellent all round player with attacking mindset.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Looks like we wont be getting David Villa then, reports are saying he's turned down Spurs as he's holding out for a move to Real Madrid.

Don't think he'll fit in with the current formation, and didn't expect him to come here anyways.

We are getting Dani Alves (PRAY!!) :-pp

Re: Liverpool Thread

aaron lennon would be a far better buy than barry

We don't need lennon. He is still makes too many mistakes. It would take probably over two years to improve in a sense. And we have Gerado Bruna who hopefully in about 2 years will play in the Liverpool first team. Bruna apparently has been said to be better than messi.

He was dubbed Real's answer to Messi, but that doesn't mean much. The kid obviously has talent, and might very well make it, but it's too early too call.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I don't think Lennon would be any good for you guys, he's lucky to even get in the Spurs team in my opinion. His crossing has been getting progressively worse for the past 2 seasons when really he should be improving and he never scores either!

Bentley would be better, although he might cost a lot. Obviously, he's a few years older than Lennon but he offers far better end product but also he lives in/around the right area (with playing for Blackburn) so he wouldn't have to up roots and relocate which would help settling in.

I don't know why Rafa doesn't play Benayoun more, he always seems to produce considering the playing time he gets.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Lennon is a pace merchant, and that's about it. No end product.

I really like Bentley, but as you say, he might cost a lot, and Hughes isn't exactly willing to let him come to Anfield.

Benayoun was never bought as a starter, but just to add some guile to the squad. He does go missing in games, but always has the special touch about him.

I am just hoping that the Pandev rumors that came up last year, start coming up again :DUMMY:

Spot on, he can run and that's it!!

I know what your saying about Benayoun and I agree he was bought as a squad player but I think his contribution has far exceeded other players in the team so maybe he deserves more of a chance? I guess Rafa knows better than I do though!! And Gerrrad goes missing a lot as well so you can't use that as an excuse! :-pp

I've not seen a lot of Pandev but he looks class and would defintely be worth a look at.

I want Alves personally. I would cry with joy if we bought Alves.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I assume you mean 'if we bought Alves'??

Anyway, I can see him going to Chelsea to be honest. If he does come to England I'd rather he went to Tottenham followed by United or Liverpool but Chelsea keep playing Essien at rightback so I assume they're not happy with Belletti and Ferreira and the transfer fee certainly wouldn't bother them so it seems more viable. Who knows maybe he'll go to Barca or Real.
