Re: Liverpool Thread(King Kenny!!)
Tony Barrett was asked a question during his Times webchat about the negative effect Cecil might have had on #LFC
"If Purslow is going to take his share of the credit for the role he played in removing Hicks and Gillett then he must also take his share of the blame for the state that Liverpool got themselves in on the pitch last summer.
"Roy Hodgson was Purslow's appointment. Joe Cole was pursued by Purslow from early in the year even though Benitez didn't want him. Purslow inserted clauses in the contracts of Reina and Torres which will allow both to leave this summer if certain conditions are met.
"Purslow told Reina he could choose his own goalkeeper coach following the departure of Xavi Valero only for Reina to then have 68-year-old Mike Felly foisted upon him.
"You get the picture."
TB: "Kenny undoubtedly wants the job long term, there is no question about that."
TB: "His contract situation is quite complex though as discussions about a new deal began last summer but were not concluded by Purslow"
TB: "I've got to hold my hands up and admit that right now I have no real ideas about who Liverpool are looking at this month."
TB: "At least there is no longer a need 2 worry about the Carlton Cole or Robert Huth inflicting their journeyman abilities on club though."
TB: "The manager has just changed + I've got feeling that will mean the profile of players LFC are looking to recruit will change also."
TB: "RH prioritised height + while it's true LFC are lacking in this department I've got a feeling that......
TB: "......Dalglish will put skill, passing ability and speed higher on his list of requirements."
TB: "LFC have definitely been keeping tabs on Suarez, both DC + his predecessor Macia have been regular watchers of Ajax this season."
TB: "I'm not sure a move for Suarez is imminent but I keep hearing the same rumours as you"
TB: "Half of Europe's top clubs are now aware of Lukaku but he's deffo the kind of promising young player that LFC should be looking at."
TB: "I like Owen Coyle, he's a very promising manager who plays the game the right way + is also steeped in philosophies of Shanks + Kenny"
TB: "Shanks and Kenny are Coyle's heroes. If Liverpool were to look to a British manager then he would be the obvious choice"
TB: NESV have created a monster by appointing KD. If LFC do even remotely well no one will want him to leave the manager's position"
TB: "but the owners have their hearts set on a younger man."
TB "Dalglish will definitely give the younger players a chance and don't be surprised if he fast tracks a couple of kids from the academy"
TB: "I can't see Poulsen or Konchesky being #LFC players come the start of next season, the only surprise is someone ever thought they were."
Tony B says Insua shouldn't have been allowed to leave on loan, "but he was on Purslow's list and didn't survive the cull."
Acknowledges downsides to Insua but letting him go out on loan to bring Konchesky in at cost > £4m "was ridiculous in the extreme."
TB: "Momentum + positivity that has been greeted by KD's return now needs to be built upon"
TB: "And what better way to do that than signing a few quality players to improve the squad?"
TB: " Purslow is still at the club in a non-executive role, ie in title only. He has no influence on the owners or their decisions."
TB: "A lot was said about Rafa + his relationship with the academy while he was manager and the truth is that for most of his reign......
TB: .....it was a dysfunctional one. But in his final year in the job he got the control he was looking for and was able to.....
TB: .....install a top class coaching set up. and entrust people he believed in with player recruitment. The fruits of that can be seen now"
TB: "The current youth team is Rafa's legacy."
TB: "It is also a result of the brilliant work put in by people like Dalglish, Rodolfo Borrell, Pep Segura and Frank McParland."
TB: "I'm pretty sure Clarke is seen as a specialist coach rather than a future manager. If + when Dalglish does step aside the he should...
TB: .....take on the role that Bob Paisley took on when Kenny himself was made player manager in 1985"
