GTA IV - NON-SPOILER THREAD

Mine aint either

where are you looking Radiation? if your talking about the marathon part i guess i just aint done enough to get anything

Just reinstalling everything on the ps3 and everytime i download the patch for this game gta freezes during the legal screen!

Works perfect without the potch - refuses to load with the patch

What a load of shite - searched around and its not just me either

That's mad and totally unfair on everyone was has that problem. I hope Sony/Rockstar sort it out, it's so wrong.

I'm pretty gutted it was awesome playing online GTA IV with you! :(

I'm pissed

First their shitty game knackered my console and now they're blocking me from online play

for now im having to play without the patch

- and from what ive read around rockstar have no idea whats causing it

Rockband loads perfectly so it has to be GTA and the 60 gig console

If the game starts locking up on me again this week im just going to have to get a 40 gigger replacement which is gutting because i love the bigger HDD and i love all the extras the 60 gig gives me

I can imagine how good it is having a 60gig, it's not right that you have to put up with all that crap cause of a game. Rockstar should definitely be sorting it out, it's a complete joke. I have the resetting and game freezing occasionally but it's nothing like what's happening to you. 60gig owners seem to be getting most of the crap.

Seems the patch ONLY fixes online stability issues and frees the gamespy server loads up a lot (i knew it was those crappy bastards supplying the servers as soon as we found problems)

So sounds like gta broke one machine by a complete fluke of an error during an auto save - and ive been supplied with a machine which has fallen foul to the freezing during load up problem.

Everyone stay the hell away from me and my bad luck for a while!

===

Reinstalled the game and managed to get the ps3 to run at 1080i on xmb and 720p on games - so i thought id try the patch once again just incase there was an error with the resolution not being able to run the game.

Downloaded and ran the game and poof - works perfectly!

Back online tonight me thinks

This is the first problem ive ever had with it - it's been a good ol machine up until GTA came and sucked the life out of it.

checked my stats just now in the game and found that everything ive done in the past has caught up with me and been tracked - it says ive played 30 odd games now and my rank is finally correct.

So i guess no matter what we all do online - if the stats don't track right away eventually everything will catch up with you

Has anyone elses stats been updated?

On my screen you all have

He's so true on 99% of his points --- im starting to lean towards 'this game is... hmm... alright' and thinking about how much better (oh no he didn't!) saints row is.

Like he says - the sandbox side gets dull fast... the missions are the same old same old, picking friends up within a hour each time is alright but it does distract you from the action a lot.

I don't know - im enjoying it, enjoying it enough to start again yesterday and change my decisions (although thats proving harder than i thought as i just cant bring myself to kill off certain people) but this is the same old game we've played before and hardly, other than graphics, pushes itself out in next gen glory.

Take away the awesome online mode (and someone please actually take away the unbalanced crappy Cops N crooks mode!) and the game is average.

So many key elements missing and once the story is over theres near to fuck all to do in the offline game. It's like they are too afraid to move the goalposts and try something different and kill off some of their fan base and get 'GTA loses it 2/10' reviews

-
Think back to the jump from Ps1 to PS2 and how far they pushed the game to give us soo many new things in a totally new way -- and then here they had another chance to do that and they basically give us a high res GTA 3

Hypocritically I would love a 80's era GTA made again - but honestly.. and please don't kill me... this game (ignoring the online side) is a let down.

I agree aswell, its starting to remind me of Pro Evo, great game but the developers are scared to do anything new and hope the same formula keeps getting them threw, I hope the next version has a tone of new features etc to freshen it up a bit.

With the $500 mill they made i cant see them bothering... it'll be even harder for them to try something different as they can just give us a different city now, re write the story replacing all the characters names with different names Add in planes and modding and allow us to buy buildings and businesses and jumble up the missions and release it as GTA IV: [Blank] City.

Brave views from KRad and Young_Gun, good too see.

I was just coming in to say that I fired this up for the first time in a few days last night and ... yea, 'meh' didnt get very excited.

Its a weird game - as technically I think its superb and what they've crammed into it is nothing short of amazing. Its a game that your head says 10/10 for the technical achievement, but the heart is thinking... MMmmm 7/10 tops, its a bit dull at times.

I've given up on the online side for now - crashes aside, I just find it a little wanting - and I'll tell you why - COD4. I think COD4s online system has ruined online games!

The way it pushes you to keep playing and playing with its level up system is absolute genius and any game that doesnt do that now doesnt hold my attention for long.

I'm glad GRID has something similar.

Anyway, back on topic - I think I will always dip into GTA4 in the future and will definately keep it as sometimes it does genuinely dazzle and make your jaw drop, but the general grind of missions, long driving sections on failures and other frustrations mean I dont think it will ever dominate my time like I hoped it would.

The first week was awesome though eh!?

I think the game mode is flawed...

- The crooks only have handguns the cops have sub machine guns - in a straight face to face fight the crook has no chance when 200 bullets are coming at him and he's sending back 4.

- Cops always start in a car - crooks tend to start in the middle of industrial areas or open land with no cars in sight.

- On a few rounds the cops start stupidly close to the crooks and games can be over within seconds.

- The cops always have a gps icon of the leader but the crooks have no idea where the cops are coming from (which isn't a flaw of the game... it just helps the cops out too much)

The mode COULD be awesome if they had tweaked it all a little...

My suggestions

* Change the game mode so the point of the game is for the cops to kill all of the gang and for the gang to stay hidden or stay alive until a timer runs out. Maybe the cops could start with a cash sum and the longer the crooks stay alive the more of that sum the crooks gain. So the cops have another reason to find them ASAP and the crooks have a real reason to stay hidden along with the fun.

Players would start off with a cut scene maybe showing the bank being robbed, our crooks escaping and then the driver is killed and the car crashes leaving our crooks stranded.

A call goes out and the cops at the police HQ are called into action and thats where we all start.

The crooks have to run and hide and the cops jump into the cars or the chopper and go out to find them.

The cops get a rough idea where the cops where last spotted so they have something to work with.

* Have an eye in the sky player who flies a chopper around above everyone and as long as he can see the crooks then the men on the ground get a GPS icon of where the crook are - if he loses track of the crooks then you could get a hazy area on your map showing where pedestrians and others have reported seeing the crooks - just so the game doesn't boil down to the crooks hiding in 1 corner of the map and the cops being on another - And maybe give us the option of one player riding in the chopper with the machine gun who can take aim and fire.

Any crooks that are taken out with him above them - then he will get a bonus sum of money for an assist at the end - so he isn't just playing the lookout man with little action and no monetary reward at the end.

It would be nice for a picture in picture GRAW style image in the cops screens showing the eye in the sky's camera shot of below him. With heat vision options for the crooks hiding in bushes and so on.

Also they could throw in another playing into the chopper who could control a searchlight to help finding the crook in the nighttime rounds.

That's like how we used to play cops N robbers when we were young. The robbers ran off somewhere with a hundred count start and then the cops side would run around the street in teams tracking the robbers down asking people walking the streets if they had seen a young boy blond hair etc etc...

I dont see the problems becuase you switch teams

so both side have the same advantages/disadvantages

But the cops always have the advantage - switching sides doesn't make both sides have the same advantages/disadvantages - it just means you spend 1 round getting beat and then 1 round where you can actually have a play.

Though yes, you can win as the crooks - its not impossible at all

If the mode was just a ratings system to see who could play as the cops the best and everyone took a round each then id get why they gave the cops such a big advantage.

But as it is... at least on the PS3

The round starts and the cops will get to the GPS icon within 30 seconds - all 4 men will unload everything they have at the leader who is standing in the middle of nowhere with no vehicles around for him to jump into - game ends

Round 2 - see above

Round 3 - the cops start further away and the crooks start near vehicles - this round plays out more fairly although the cops still have the machine guns and can destroy your car in seconds

repeat

--

It's like the games in call of duty where you have to attack and defend something - both teams have the same style of weapons available to them and the only difference is they see the map front opposing views - when that round ends you swap.

That's a fair and balanced round style game that comes down to skill, luck and teamwork

Here - 1 teams starts with an advantage the other doesn't

Round 2 the same as above

repeat

ah your playing all for one and i agree thats pants

play one for all and the game is awesome, its brilliant when you see 3 cop cars with 2 men in each chasing after the crooks who all go there own ways ;))

Yeah thats the mode it seems EVERYONE on the ps3 plays. I've set up a load of one for all games and people just quit them --- seems they all want the easy money that comes with quick ending all for one games.

there are 2 different modes for cops n crooks. 'one for all' and 'all for one' (i think thats what theyre called).
the difference between them is in one you kill the boss, in the other you kill every gang member.
