One of best looking Ferrari F1 cars had lots of black on it:

And actually all over the internet Ferrari fans (including me) were asking for less white and more black for quite a few years now.

Actually I don't mind the Ferrari. The nose is at least at little more elegant than the other cars presented so far.

As Cuky correctly pointed out, black on a Ferrari is nothing unusual. It was quite prominent on the beautiful Ferraris of the late 80s and early 90s.

As for the Lotus, who decided it was a good idea to put a fork on the front of Maldonado's car?
 
Yea, black on Ferrari cars has never looked good imo and it's OTT this year. Still, the nose is the major talking point -- it looks terrible. McLaren nose looks good though. Have a feeling the Newey and Merc cars will look similar. Interested to see how these cars sound.

it is to "make championship interesting until the end"

But imagine...say Driver A has a 49 points lead over Driver B. In the last race Driver A has to only finish inside top 10 as 10th position will give him 2 instead of 1 point and even if Driver B wins Driver A will be a champion with 1 point advantage.

But say that we have the same Driver A 49 points in front of Driver B. Race starts and after some time Driver A's engine explodes. Driver B wins and he takes the championship with 1 point. Isn't that largely unfair towards Driver A who was more consistent during whole season to loose championship because he had to retire (not with his own fault) in that one race that had double points awarded??
 
Yes, agree, so far the best of all these bad cars.

Still, Sauber's main problem is visible: Lack of sponsors.

Makes me wonder why some teams are finding it so difficult to find sponsors?

F1 has the highest profile and viewing figures of any motorsport. It's got global appeal with access to markets across the world. You would think sponsors would be queuing up to get involved in F1. Even McLaren are without a major sponsor after the end of the Vodafone deal.

I don't get it.
 
Guess it'd be too expensive to actually let F1 teams use your logo. Remember what huge budgets are needed nowadays to take part in all races of the season. Only way to get money (excluding all those paydriver-solutions, which will end badly for F1 as the majority of these drivers doesn't have the talent needed for that series) for the teams is from sponsors and television contracts. The latter are in the hands of (again) Berne E. and the money is divided after a certain scheme. So the only source of money they can influence is the one of the sponsorship. And because of limited space you can't give away more than a certain number of advertising spots, which makes advertising on a F1 car quite expensive. Additionally, most of the cars aren't visible as often as the handful cars of the three leading teams, so why would a company invest huge sums into such a team?

What I like is the idea Jacques Villeneuve brought up last year: American racing leagues don't force teams to paint all cars from a team with the same livery. This might help making way for more sponsors if a team can now offer more ad space on two differently painted cars, because companies would only pay for one car (fewer space = fewer payments) and therefore more money would reach the teams.

Apart from all that theory: There should be a budget limit. If the most watched motor sport series in the world is too expensive for many teams something isn't correct.

But you wouldn't believe how close they were to all teams owing the same percentage of TV rights...

In Formula one documentary called simply "1", one of ex McLaren employes has said that on weekend of Japanese GP in 1976 Bernie Ecclestone has bought TV rights for F1 in whole world. He than called up a meeting with 9 other team bosses (he was in Brabham at that time) and had offered them 10% share for 100.000$. One of them refused the offer with statement "do you know how much testing I can get for 100.000$??" and others followed the same. That left Bernie with all TV rights under his ownership for just 1.000.000$
 
The idea of having two different liveries within one team is potentially a good solution. The DTM is a prominent example of this.

If F1 has out-priced itself and represents poor value to major sponsors then the FIA needs to urgently assess how the sport can be sustainable going forward.

We are heading towards a situation where only the big four or five teams can survive and the rest will fall away. Costs need to decrease and equality must improve. Pay drivers are killing the credibility of F1 and need to become the exception not the rule.
 
financial problems for F1 started (at least in this size) when EU banned tobacco branding. Just look at the number of teams that had tobacco sponsorship at that time (and some of those were big contracts as those brands even got their name in official team name): Marlboro, West, Mild Seven, Lucky Strike, 555, Benson & Hedges, Sobranie

Also, teams with those sponsors (official entry names):
Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro
West McLaren Mercedes
Mild Seven Renault F1 Team
Lucky Strike BAR Honda

Also in that year (2005.) Jordan had Sobranie sponsorship, which came after contract with Benson & Hedges was over. BAR used 555 livery at Chinese GP.


But even after that there were some big sponsorship deals in F1: Allianz with Williams, Panasonic with Toyota, Petronas with BMW Sauber....but most of big names bailed out when big car manufacturers like Honda, Toyota and BMW had left the sport.
 
may I ask why mclaren uses his engine supplier's name on their official team name besides the sponsor's? they used honda and peugeot in the past as well. most of the other teams don't do like this.
 
There was some talking that it is like that in the rules. But I have just checked official F1 site and McLaren is the only team which has engine manufacturer name added in Full team name.

But on official graphics shown during practice, qualifying and race broadcasts you will see engine manufacturer added next to constructor's name (because, strangely enough, team is not the same as constructor)...so under drivers name you'll have the name of constructor for which he is competing and you'll have RBR Renault, Williams Renault, Force India Mercedes, Sauber Ferrari, Marussia Cosworth, Caterham Renault, STR Ferrari, Lotus Renault, McLaren Mercedes. Those were names seen in 2013. with only Ferrari and Mercedes teams named just Ferrari instead of Ferrari Ferrari, and Mercedes instead of Mercedes Mercedes.


Following that...those are full team names for 2014 and constructors names with engine manufacturer. And I have added drivers with their numbers as list is now completed:

I think they see it like this. McLaren, being not just a f1 team but also a car manifacturer (f1, p1 etc) as you know, need to name their f1 team other than just "mclaren" as it could be confusing. however, they don't seem to prefer to give a name as "mclaren f1 team" like marussia, caterham, lotus and williams companies do. so instead they're preferring to put the engine supplier's name besides theirs. 1993, when they raced under the name "marlboro mclaren" seems to be the only exception. before then they've used names like "mclaren international", "team mclaren", "mclaren motor racing".

of course, why they don't just pick a name like "mclaren motor racing" (it's cool I think) and stick to it is just beyond me.
or are they doing this to get some extra money from their engine partners as a "fake" secondary title sponsor?

Because McLaren always had a very close connection to Mercedes, in the same way as AMG.

but they will rename the team "mclaren honda"/"honda mclaren" by 2015 when they begin to use honda engines as well. on the other hand, mercedes uses the phrase "f1 team" in their official team name besides "AMG" (mercedes amg f1 team) unlike mclaren (just mclaren mercedes). I see what you mean to say but I don't think that's the case.
 
Toro Rosso looks as stupid as McLaren's solution, especially because they use more than one color. Agree on Sauber, at least that looks a bit like a normal racecar.

@Lotus: Just read today that their noses aren't having the same length, one part is 5.xx centimetre longer, so they fit into the new regulations and are officially only having one spike as nose, not both. :ROLL:
