Football Manager 2008

I usually don't allow transfers in the first market. To see out of contract players go to player search, click filter, and add Contract as one of the criteria, then set to expired. By the way its hell hard to survive with Fulham. I managed to do it on the last few days of the season.

What do you mean by "don't allow transfers in the first market."? You mean you don't do them in the first transfer period?

There's an option before you start a game that says "enable transfers in first transfer window" or something like that, you can switch it off so the squads all stay the same until season two (so you have a whole season with the real-life players), I think that's what he's talking about. It makes sense to save money but on the other hand I always run the club into the ground to get the best players and get promotion (but I'm not playing as Fulham obviously).

Its more realistic because your team and other teams will start off with their new transfers already, ie. Torres is a new player alraedy. It also avoids ridiculous signings that teams make like City signing Berbatov, Gattuso and Deco in the first window.

I noticed when playing my first time I was getting a lot of injuries in the friendlies. Should I only play these guys half the match and then sub them out? And should I change up the training? Also, should my injured players have general training or rest?

It's a lot more realistic than games like FIFA and PES. The players have been off on their holidays for a long time without any fitness training so don't push them too hard early on. In friendlies set your tackling to "easy", and use all your subs.

I've been focusing more on the kind of players I sign now. I always aim to sign players that are rated as very determined by my scouts to make sure the personalities dont clash. I also train my players to play into new positions, so all of my players play at least 2-3 different positions except for my GK and strikers.

You get the choice at the start of the season on how to distribute your bonuses for league, cup and continental competitions. I don't think you can do it at any other time, apart from, of course, team talks.

I don't have the instruction manual. I don't know how to set farrows and barrows. Lots of stuff.

As Stef said, turn the advisor on, it'll help :)

Farrows and barrows you do by dragging the shirts on the pitch when looking at the tactics. Right-mouse click the shirt and drag it to where you want the players to run to.

I'm just not motivated to play FM 08 anymore. I'm just too excited about FM Live and actually playing online and against real people instead of the AI.

I think you have to use arrows really, especially with the formation I play. Something like:

--------- ST --------
---W-----AM------W---
------MC----MC-------
---FB-----------FB---
-------DC---DC-------

In that formation, I have both wingers running to the space where my striker is, to give the striker options to pass. I have the full-backs running into the space where the wingers originally should be. I have one of the centre mids on a farrow to the AM slot, and a MC dropping into the defensive mid hole. Occasionally I'll have my AMC running into the striker slot too.

Works well and won me the Champions League with Atletico Madrid as well as finishing in the top four for four consecutive seasons (missing out on the league title by two points in my final season).

I play a simple:

------ST------
-----AMC-----
LM-CM--CM-RM
LB-CB---CB-RB

I have arrows for my LM and RM going all the way up to same level as ST. My LCM has one dragging back to the DM position. I managed to reach 9th with Fulham and have one of the best defenses.

I find the striker doesn't have enough opportunities with that formation. The wingers (or side-mid's in your formation) can get up to the byline and the position where they're meant to be is completely exposed and leaves a HUGE gap for the opposition to exploit.

I tried about 20 different formations in my 3 years and only this one got me results. I've come 17th, 16th, then suddenly 9th with a great defensive record. My 2 Cms are defensive players and my defensive line is full of actual defenders, no WBs or attacking defenders. I think that covers the space thats there. My 2 side midfielders are also very complete - Neri Cardozo and Pedro Leon - Pedro got midfielder of the season!
