FIFA 23 Discussion Thread (Console Versions)

Our OS thread is literally going every day and there are a lot of guys having fun with their Career Modes. Lots of us are just trying to squeeze more into the game. I think there are a lot of people that are enjoying the game for what it is but will still wish for more.

Unfortunately, as much as I love Evo, a lot of [same] criticism about FIFA 23, and beating the horse to a pulp isn't really motivating anyone from posting about their career modes. Just the way it is this year.

Hoping 2023 is the year though. Till then, I'm going to keep playing 23.

I think you will still find some positivism in the thread Matt as well good constructive criticism.
Thanks for the work on the sliders. I definitely would like to see more posts from career modes and games like the clips saturator posts
I dont think EAFC24 will be a massive change, but as long as I can enjoy it I've made my peace with the little niggles here and there just as I did with '22 and '23 which I find fun.

Yeah, I will start posting some clips too. There's a lot of little things in the game that just get overlooked. My streamable is filled with so many clips it's crazy.

What for me personally started as the worst FIFA ever is actually the football game I have the most fun with since a long time, thanks to Matt's latest sliders. I started a new career mode and am playing this my complete Christmas holidays. It's far from perfect but I can overlook most of the issues and animations. There are so many things happening on the pitch, Matt and his crew really did a perfect job for all offline players in my opinion.
Though the players sliding while walking is really cringe worthy to look at, why the heck do they slide around like that...

Since i can't locate the career mode thread, i have a personal question, what is the "Benzema Regen mene" ?

I've read a lot mentions in Reddit about it, but even after Google search,a lot mention it as given, no one explains it. How does the abbrev goes, please ELI5 =Explain Like I'm 5 (years old).

CM players, what's the deal with Benzema's regen ? Please ELI5 (cool) 😎

Hi all,

I’m tempted to purchase a PS5 with FIFA 23, given that I’m itching for a football game to play. Having read through this thread, I understand that there are various fundamental flaws to the gameplay. However, I’m interested to know whether goal variety is a plus point for this edition of FIFA? E.g. Is there a wealth of goalkeeping animations? Are there plenty of unattractive goals (such as rebounds, deflections, goal mouth scrambles, mis-hits, goalkeeper mistakes)? Is there a sense that goals can come from anywhere?

Honest answer is I’m really enjoying this. I don’t even use sliders, just 5 minute halves, professional classic matches. Having a blast.

the range of animations is mind blowing, keepers are great variety wise, goals are always varied, seen all manner of finishes, sidefoots, chips, own goals, deflections, controlled shots, dipping shots, curled shots, power shots. I really need to upload all clips.

Yeah, there is a lot of variety. It's just crazy. Part of why I can't put the game down.

This happened on Legendary difficulty:

Brilliant save from the keeper:

Double save:

Helps to have a tall player in the box on set pieces:

One of my all-time favorite goals:

CPU stunning switch of play:

What a strike from the young right-back:

looks good matt. I actually gave a go to your sliders last night. I previously had a good set but was finding way to many goals. I really enjoyed your legendary lower time halves one. I still need to adjust shot acc as i was sending ball to stands (i play semi). But def a nice base to start. Enjoyable games except for the usual bs ai scoring in the 90th min which happens to me a lot in this yrs edition. Could be my sh*tty defending tho

Great to hear - yeah, those late ones are frustrating, but I also defer to my own defending. Not to say FIFA doesn't have those scenarios scripted, but that doesn't mean it will result in a goal each time. I've scored some late ones too, which continues the theme that anything the CPU can do - so can I.

I'm having such a blast with this game using a slightly changed operation sports sliders , so many close exciting games. My last one was a nil nil following two 1 nil wins and had a goal disallowed for handball on 82 mins.gutted

The women's stuff is pointless as its so broken. The sliders seem to have no effect on it whatsover, or certain teams are massively overpowered. I tried Liverpool v Reading, and had to quit at the 20 mins mark as it was 5-1 to Reading

The women football is a bit mad. But then again it is a bit like playground football in real life hence the crazy scores. Women's football isn't at the same maturity tactically as the mens yet.

Update 6

Gameplay

Made the following changes:
  • When playing against a team using Constant Pressure, your AI teammates will attempt to more actively provide shorter passing options.
  • When a CPU controlled defending player applies Constant Pressure to the ball carrier but does not win the ball back, they can take longer to track back.
    • This has no impact on human controlled players.
  • Decreased Stamina Decay by 11.7% for Constant Pressure, Press After Possession Loss, and Press On Heavy Touch Defensive Custom Tactics.
  • In some cases, ball carriers are now more likely to maintain possession of the ball when pressured from behind by a defender.

Addressed the following issues:
  • When chasing Lofted Through Passes, defenders could incorrectly slow down at times.
  • Addressed further instances of the ball unintentionally falling back to the attacking player after a defender makes a tackle.
  • During kick offs, teams with a high defensive line could push up too closely to the center of the pitch.
  • In some cases, using Player Lock when playing with customized controls could result in unwanted requests being performed.
  • When locking to a player without the ball, the CPU ball carrier could perform unwanted Skill Moves or passes.
  • Addressed instances of some animations not playing correctly when there is physical contact between two players.
  • In some cases, a quick free kick could not be taken and transitioned to a traditional free kick.
  • Sometimes, a Semi-Assisted Through Pass could incorrectly be hit out of play.
  • Removed heading animations that could unnecessarily occur when a player was requested to perform a header but was not in contention for the ball.
  • In some specific situations, the CPU AI could not win the ball back if the human controlled player was shielding the ball.
  • Further addressed instances of ball carriers running over the ball when making a dribble.
  • In some cases, CPU AI goalkeepers could perform an unintentionally poor pass from a goal kick.
  • In rare situations, after receiving a pass, the ball carrier could have become momentarily unresponsive.
  • Improved referee logic when making foul decisions in situations where the offending player quickly moved away from the ball carrier.
  • Improved referee logic when making foul decisions regarding slide tackles.

ah crap!

Addressed further instances of the ball unintentionally falling back to the attacking player after a defender makes a tackle.

This is the stuff that makes me rage - a free admission that tackle/ball-physics don't control the ball trajectory, but simply "the tackling player MUST ALWAYS keep the ball or the player won't feel rewarded". Those fake, forced physics are constantly visible to me in every aspect of the game - the ball is now completely unnatural in its constantly-manipulated movement (e.g. headers from piss-weak lobs that somehow fly like bullets, despite the total lack of momentum).

Without a way to remove this arcade-level bullshit, it's unplayable to me. Please just give us a "realism" switch that controls all of this (not even just for offline, but for games against friends online too). I'm not going to cry if I make a tackle and don't win the ball, EA, I'm an adult. Stop treating me the way you treat your FUT players. When will you realise we are not all the same (or rather, will you ever care)?

Also:

When playing against a team using Constant Pressure, your AI teammates will attempt to more actively provide shorter passing options.

This is where football games used to rely on you, as the "manager", seeing an incompatibility with your tactics and changing your "pass support" level to compensate. The fun used to be in using your brain to observe patterns and make changes to overcome issues.

Now, it's as dumbed down as it possibly can be (while "tricks" are so complicated it's like disarming a bomb). I'm so sick of this constant dumbing-down of what makes football, football. It will never end. Online, sure. Offline, fuck this - but we're forced to take it, as always.

If anything, there needs to be fewer passing options. Pass accuracy is barely ever below 85%-90% because a pass is always on.

I will take zeroed-in pressure rather than defensive ADD any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Played a match (post-update) against Brighton, as QPR, earlier and they absolutely dominated us defensively. It was impossible to get my forward to hold onto the ball without the center-back pressuring him, while other defending players cut off passing lanes. The pressure they'd put on my defenders trying to build from the back was incredible. Several players would push forward and cut off passing lanes while forcing my CBs to either play backward or driven passes out wide. If I managed to get the ball up to my forward and wingers, the defensive midfielders would tackle from behind while the CBs put pressure upwards.

I did notice how my players started to show for the ball a bit earlier, but I was using balanced tactics, so I'd be curious if fast build up/forward run tactic would play against the higher pressure. All I can say is that when you play against a pressure tactic team, you will feel it. Sometimes they will sprint into you (such as forwards trying too hard), or they will jockey while the other players sprint towards the intended receivers.

Is it safe to update Matt?

It's interesting as even in FIFA 2003, 20 years ago there was this exact option in game settings.

Match type: Simulation or Action.

A primarily single player / offline game with no FUT casino VS a game where only online matters and you have to force the same crap gameplay to as many people as possible. I used to think they just don't care for the offline part lately, but maybe it's worse than that, putting in the effort to code in the competitor mode makes me think that someone really, really wants you having the online "experience" everywhere.

Im always getting mad at

Decreased Stamina Decay by 11.7% for Constant Pressure, Press After Possession Loss, and Press On Heavy Touch Defensive Custom Tactics.

As it stands - there is no real pressure to make any substitutions. Its so easy to have everyone happy and on constant boosts throughout the season. When they dont get tired on top of that - it just becomes silly.
Thats why I always preferred Pes form system. It was pushing you to rotate your squad and kept things interesting.

Have you ever played the game? Stamina loss was huge when using constant pressure.

Not sure if you watch TTB's videos, but he just had an episode a couple days ago where he switched to constant pressure, and realized it was a bad mistake. His team was depleted for the next match and depth was tested quite a bit.

My hope with stamina depletion is more non-contact injuries. It's been a tricky test to get the injury frequency/severity in a spot that creates those possibilities without losing an entire squad in a short period.

And is that a bad thing? That he had learn a lesson, play more tactically and struggle a bit?

Also - my point was much wider than this specific example, Matt.
I have played many Career Mode seasons in recent Fifas and after a short while you have a team of superheroes. All arrows up, +6 boosts to stats, smiley faces everywhere. The game rarely force you to make any changes in the squad.
Stamina (which is broke with sliders for years now) is normally the only thing that would push me to bring in the subs.
I said that "Im always getting mad" when I see these things, because I wasnt just referring to this particular change in this particular patch.
My point was that from the get go they are always chipping away on stuff that makes the game more realistic.
Injuries, randomness, stamina, fouls, yellow cards.
Anything, just to make the game into non-stop action, without pauses.
