FIFA 13

Seriously - I don't have these speed issues.

I play with Spurs on Full Manual and on Slow setting (Default sliders).

And sometimes I think that the game is too slow.

For me the speed is perfect - I got a day 1 patch (4mb), don't know what it fixed :)

Usually I would bitch about the speed being to fast, but this year I think they have nailed it :)

I don't have any speed issues either. Playing the PS3 version of the game on full manual, slow game speed with some sliders adjusted, the game is almost too slow at times. What I've noticed is that most games get slower over time,which is somewhat appropriate I suppose when you take fatigue into account.

I was talking to someone on the SoccerGaming forums and they tell me there is a file called product.ini where you can tailor the game in much greater depth than the sliders allow, very interesting for PC players, check out the file: http://www.mediafire.com/?dc91qe76wkl2x3q

A few notable things you can tweak:

Code:
// Career Mode difficulty tuning
[CAREER_MODE]

// negative means that the opposition is better than us
// positive means that the opposition is worse than us
OVERALL_RATING_DIFF_0 	= -100
OVERALL_RATING_DIFF_1 	= -100
OVERALL_RATING_DIFF_2 	= -100

Looks like you can tweak the difference between top quality sides and lower quality sides.

Code:
BUS_POSITONING = 1
BUS_PASSING = 75
BUS_BUILDUPSPEED = 1
CC_SHOOTING = 99
CC_PASSING = 75
CC_POSITIONING = 2
CHANCE_PASSING_% = 50
CHANCE_SHOOTING_% = 99
COUNTER_ATTACK_ATTACKING_DIFF = 0
COUNTER_ATTACK_CHECK_DELAY = 100
COUNTER_ATTACK_CHECK_NUM = 100
COUNTER_ATTACK_OTHER_CHECK_DELAY = 100.5
COUNTER_ATTACK_PITCHZONE_PERCENT = 10
COUNTER_ATTACK_TURNOVER_PITCHZONE_PERCENT = 10
COUNTER_ATTACK_YARDS_FROM_BALL = 15

Fine tuning the build up speed of CPU teams (not possible with sliders) and also the parameters required for them to take on shots or when they should counter attack. This has a lot of potential for slowing the game down, I'm not sure how much I'd want to fiddle with things but reducing BUS_BUILDUPSPEED to create a more methodical offline experience could be worthwhile.

There are so many settings there it's disturbing, you could create an entirely new game almost.

But the more I play this, the more I dont like it.

I was blown away to begin with which is never a good sign for me. I am one of those players that is usually a bad thing and the bad games get better if that makes sense?

Actually probably doesnt make any sense at all :P

Lol, i gave you a month, but it took a week. :))

When playing the AI, I struggle a bit defensively and never feel in total control. Consequently , I was wondering whether any of you could provide an in-depth explanation, detailing exactly how you defend. I've tried many different approaches, such as using contain vs jockeying manually, tracking the player on the ball vs closing down a passing lanes, using secondary contain vs not using it, constantly switching players using l1 vs only controlling one particular player for the whole defensive phase etc.

Like nerf said, you've got to use multiple approaches and don't expect to ever feel in total control.

That said, the problem is that neither of the primary basic approaches - aggressively pressing or cautiously sitting back - work as well as they should.

Aggressively pressing hasn't worked all that well since they switched to Tactical Defending because contain doesn't allow you to get within tackling distance and the AI can react so quickly that sprinting or rushing in is typically ineffective or too risky. (Making matters worse, however, is that the AI can aggressively press very effectively when it chooses to do so, like at the end of games in which it's losing.)

As for the more cautious approach, which I do think is primarily the most effective way to play against the AI, like nerf mentioned you're still at the mercy of your teammate AI who are often too passive and fail to react to danger as they should.

Still, especially when playing against the CPU on World Class or Legendary, I think the cautious approach is best. This is essentially my strategy:

1) First, whenever I lose possession, I use Right Stick to select defenders to close off passing lanes while using Teammate Contain to apply pressure. My primary goal is to slow down the opposing team and avoid allowing a quick counter-attack. I find this essential to not only being solid defensively in FIFA but also it greatly helps in slowing the pace of play and making things more interesting.

2) After my team has regained its shape, I will then be more aggressive (unless I'm up against far superior opposition) and I then might actually control a midfielder in attempts to dispossess an attacker.

3) If the AI reaches my final third, I typically will try to use contain to force an error; I don't think it's been officially explained by EA, but I'm pretty sure that using the contain button actually increases the chances that the opposition will make a poor pass, do something stupid, or muck things up.

4) If all else fails and the opposition is within my box, I panic and press every button combination possible while simultaneously praying to the football gods . No, seriously, when the AI is close to my goal is when I'll really be aggressive and take risks. I've given away some penalties but more often than not defenders are pretty solid once you get the hang of it. (Against the top teams in FIFA though, if they're within your box on WC or Legendary, you're basically screwed.)

Overall, the changes in defending have been a mixed blessing with Tactical Defending. It's certainly an improvement but there's some serious issues that still need to be worked out. Nonetheless, I play on Legendary or World Class and conceding goals is not an issue for me as long as I am patient and cautious.

Wow! So much in there... like you say, you could really mould a new game. Fascinating.

I wonder if any of those values turn off the magnetic ball, because that would be sweet...

Nearly everyone seems to be saying this yet EA seem to think stupidly fast gameplay is the way to go. Makes it feel like an arcade game.

I wonder why they don't have speed settings that actually allow the game to be properly slowed down in the ways PES speed settings permit, where the slowest setting is probably too slow for most, but at least it gives a proper CHOICE. The current options are Too Fast, Ridiculously Fast, and Taking the Piss Fast.

Perhaps they're worried it will make the cpu cheating more obvious, as we'll have more time to observe the weird goings on in player movements and speed to favour the cpu team. Either way, it surely can't be hard for them to give us a patch with a simple speed setting to make it properly slower (like up to 15% slower).

I actually laughed at that like I laugh at FIFA when it comes to game speed. Fu*king arcade. Otherwise, great game.

They are talking about 'regenerating' after copying that file. What does that mean?

The more I play the game the more annoyed I am with the speed of it like. It feels like an arcade game and yea setting it to slow speed is fine for single player but not for online.

there's a program called regenerator (just google fifa regenerator), you run it every time you add a mod, i used it all the time for fifa 12, and I guess it must patch it into the game.

I still dont understand what the moaning is about other than I guess online as it will be quick online. There are loads of slider alterations to mould the game how you want it..Placebo has some very good sliders to start off with although I have toned them down the pace and acceleration on slow to around 44,45 and also toned the shots down to 48 as 51 a player could kick it over the goal from the halfway line to the goal from a standing position over the ball..On legendary the game is awesome now

Combined with manual shooting it can be quite deadly, I went to tackle the ball and it came loose before I got there so ended up scoring a 70 yard own goal, no joke!

what i meant was i had conceded a goal and just kicked off. Tapped it to the next man and litterally from a standing position with little leg movement he blasted it over the bar. This for me is impossible. Possible with a run up or a full outstretched leg and pushing all the way through..Just seemed way too powerful to me so I toned it down..and i play on manual too

I hadn't toched the demo for quite some time, yesterday i played a couple of games and it felt like a different demo. It ran superfast, players skated more. I noticed squads were updated but either i am delusional or the gameplay was updated too.

Sat down to this last night and played an Ultimate Team game with a ~95% chemistry 2-star side against a guy with ~60% chemistry 2-star side. The game was fantastic. Midfield was a slog, first half was 1-0 and barely anything happened - four shots each or so.

Second half was a different game, suddenly there was an urgency and the tired legs made the ball bobble a bit more often. A few mistakes and at full time it was 2-2. In the last minute of extra time he scored a header that hit the floor, bounced up and over the goalkeeper, into the net. It looked so weirdly believable - the type of thing that for a second you go "hang on that's bullshit", then think "but I've seen this happen in reality", and you sit there fuming anyway.

The more I play the game the more I absolutely love it, and again, that's really rare for me in recent years and it's usually the more I play it, the more I go off it. I even put some single player on (Be A Pro career) to remember how bad the AI is looking at half the comments I've read on here and on the EA forums, and I couldn't really fault it. Playing for Tranmere, you see far more players just lump it forward when you're standing right in front of them, and although you can still feel that the play revolves around you, it's far less dependent, and the movement is far more varied. Getting transferred or loaned out may actually provide a different feel now.

My worry is this... I've had some amazing games online and offline, with 2 star teams, on normal speed (which I've been playing on because I play online and don't want to get used to the "wrong" speed). The speed has been perfectly realistic. Switch it to Premier League teams and it's like watching Formula 1 cars knock a beach-ball about.

If they do fix the speed - and I honestly hope they do - what will happen to all the 2 star games I've been absolutely loving? Will they be in slow motion and be a slog to play?

EDIT: Going back to that Ultimate Team match, it took ages to find an opponent (a good minute or two) and the play was so scrappy it seemed like he was on semi controls too. I wonder... Does it search for someone who matches your control scheme across all modes now? Or is that just wishful thinking?

I had some quite enjoyable matches last night, still playing exhibitions while refining some sliders. I was encouraged by the variation in the games, which feels better than in previous versions.

I tried some of the 'Live Matches', including QPR v West Ham while it happened to be actually live. There was an odd coincidence when in-game Kevin Nolan was booked :Y1 less than thirty seconds after I'd just seen him being booked on the television :P

A nice moment was when I cleared a set-piece high into the air, and as the ball dropped it was Bobby Zamora and Mark Noble competing together. With the size & strength advantage, I simply held RT (shield) while the ball was in the air and Zamora just leaned his body back into Noble, holding him off and preventing his smaller opponent from managing to head the ball, able instead to bring it down. Whereas if I'd tried that against James Collins he probably would have gone over/through me and headed it.

I then played as Barcelona away at Sevilla, losing 2-0 including a top-corner screamer by Trochowski. I was able to have a Barca-esque 60%+ possession, but the closest I came to scoring was when Jordi Alba overlapped and hit the post. Messi frequently dropped deep into midfield like he does, and Busquets was a constantly available 'release valve' for Xavi & Fabregas if they were pressed, as he is IRL.

Then I went to the other extreme and played as Rotherham against Oxford in League Two. This felt very different, two much more rigid teams of lower quality, players further apart from each other. Possession was 49%-51% in an enjoyably scrappy game of bad touches and physical battles, finishing 0-0. After the short fluid passes of Barcelona, I was now instead trying to fire the ball long to Odejayi and use his strength.

Finally, I tried something different with a Be A Pro game as Hernanes for Lazio v Udinese, in Rome under the floodlights. I think PLF is right, your AI teammates make BAP quite enjoyable nowadays. I earned a penalty when a swivel of the hips attracted a defender's lunge in the area, and Klose converted... although Udinese would level later on.

I definitely think the game benefits from a reduced Acceleration slider, feels like it 'weights' the players down a bit, and raising the First Touch Error slider is fun too. The speed on Slow with edited sliders has not been a problem for me.

I also experimented with disabling the commentary to see what the crowd audio is like without it, and I think it is definitely improved this year (although I also have much better headphones for my PC compared to what I used before on the 360, so it's not the fairest comparison). I'm currently trying to download commentary in other languages which, if it works, could add to the variation too.

My only real negatives at the moment are, as ever, the already much-commented passiveness of the AI defenders not nearest the ball, and also bemoaning the return of the magnetic ball after I'd been convinced it was gone from the demo. And there's also an odd bugged behaviour the AI very occasionally adopts when they start playing strange one-touch passes in their own area. Otherwise... fun had.

I dont have any issues with the speed.

Clubs is slower, manual online is fine, online friendlies with folk on here is great as they try to play the game properly and my manager mode has been going great guns, though I am playing as Blackburn in the championship.

That said, I dont actually notice a big difference between slow and normal settings.

my issue is speed and the players feel like they are weightless.

Does anyone have good sliders for people who like the game on slow and like the players to feel heavy?

thanks

So has anyone tweaked custom tactics yet? I still think the cpu tries to walk it in.

id say put it on legendary mode ..AI pings it all over the place for me and only taps in when i have a nightmare in defence and let them walk through..I think theres a great balance this year none of the cheap cut backs

quick question i've seen answered but can't remember where.
which button do you press alongside the shoot button to force a volley instead of a header when the ball is in the air?

A cheap trick i used in the demo, and it really is a trick, is to adjust the sound settings so you can hear players kicking the ball and stuff. I found that with all th sounds equal you never really heard th players do anything, when normally you would depending on how noisy or quiet a crowd was. And not hearing them made them even more floaty. I think i ended up with evrything but crowd and effects at 2, crowd at 3 and effects at 10. The annoying part is that it makes the refs whistle and menus really loud. But it probably depends on your set up how well it all worka.
