Fifa 13: Career Mode Discussions

I'll start a new CM mode as soon as the Fifa 13 Title update is out which fixes SOME of these issues/freezes at least. Supposed to be out later this weekend for x360/ps3 users.

Just played my first proper 'session' of Fifa 13 and I must say I'm thoroughly enjoying it, despite my Blackburn side lingering in 11th place in the league table after 8 games.

Found an absolute gem in Edinho, a young kid from Portugal that Steve Kean signed over the summer and despite an overall rating of 57 he is by far the best striker on my squad in my opinion in terms of playing with. He's 4th top scorer in the league with 5 goals in 8 league games and 6 in all competitions.

This is what's happened in terms of transfers:

(In)
Nyom RB 73 (Granada CF) £1,000,000
Sana LW 70 (Ajax) Season Loan
Jordi Gomez CAM 72(Wigan Athletic) £2,000,000

(Out)
Hanley LB 58 (Northampton) Short Term Loan
Jorge CDM 53 (Shrewsbury) Season Loan
Vuckevic RM (71) Exchanged as part of Nyom deal.

My best signing by far has to be Jordi Gomez he creates everything from the CAM position in the 4-3-3 I've decided to use and he's chipped in with 3 league goals as well, so he's quickly repaying the £2,000,000 I shelled out on him. I'm currently sat 4 points outside the play offs and 7 away from the automatic promotion places, hopefully the big names like Nuno Gomes and Jordan Rhodes will buck their ideas up and start helping us climb the table.

Does anyone else find the game really hard on World Class? Had to tone it down after the first two games after I got battered by Leeds and Hull! Still find it challenging on Professional as I've lost 3-2 to Derby and settled for draws at Middlesborough and Birmingham.

I hope they've fixed the rate at which 30+ players decline.

I still can't edit my Pro, I want to put the new attributes onto him that I have unlocked, but it wont let me.

Whenever I go into it and try and come out, it says the Arsenal squad is full and it will put me in the free transfers (or whatever they call it). Then it wont let me come out at all, so I have to restart Fifa altogether.

I thought it might get better after last season, but it is still the same. Pretty bad bug to have in the game :((

Can somebody else try it on theirs and tell me what happens to them when they do it?

I'm properly loving this Fifa, especially on World Class.

I just wish I could defend better :/ Take for instance, my first league one game against Yeovil Town. I go 1-0 down inside 10 minutes, I then claw my way back and with 5 minutes to go i'm 2-1 up. Then I end up in a situation where one of my defenders is running alongside the opposing striker who's closing in on my keeper; no matter what I can't seem to push him off the ball. It's not even as if the striker is particularly strong or my defenders are particularly weak :CONFUSE:

But anyway, this keeps happening, time and time again. It's really starting to annoy me to be honest, and I was playing so well up until then and suddenly I lose out on an extra 2 points... :(

Does anybody know any adjustments I could make to the sliders to at least make this 'less constant'? I don't want the game to be too easy, I still would like to concede to keep it realistic.. I just don't want to be caught out at the back, all the time.

I'm having the same issues. The CPU when it's down in the last 10 minutes of matches become superhuman. I go ultra-defensive at that time, sometimes even switching to a 5 man backline with two DMs, but the CPU simply is too effective - from applying high pressure, to maintain possession in the final third, it's like playing on a whole new difficulty against a team rated a star higher!

The only good news is that I'm scoring enough goals to compensate for the amount that I'm leaking. And it's not because my defenders aren't good enough - thanks to the fast pace of player growth, my team is about a half star higher than any other team in npower League 2.

The biggest two problems I'm having are:

1) The CPU can initiate quick counter-attacks all too effectively, largely because it's clearances go perfectly to one if its own players, and my defenders and defensive midfielders do not apply pressure effectively enough to slow them down or win 50-50s;

2) Player switching is killing me at times. Sometimes on crosses or through-balls the player switching causes my defender to lose a step on the attacker, which is enough to allow them a clear scoring chance. At other times it switching players when I don't want it to switch.

Overall I'm really enjoying my CM, but at times it can feel quite a bit unfair against the CPU. Even more so than in the past.

There is a setting called "Switching Move Assistance" - Put that to "High" and you shouldn't have that problem anymore :)

Yeah I have seen that annoyance a few times, in defending and also in attacking, one thing I hate is when you play a long ball into a corner over a fullback but it decides you should have your forward rather than your left winger because at the point the camera moves over the ball is technically above your forwards head, even if that's 20 feet above his head before it's about to land perfectly at the feet if your winger, well it would have landed perfectly at his feet if you'd been able to wrestle control away from the forward to the winger to then be able to move into position to receive the ball!

I have "switching move assistance" turned off but will have to try playing with it some :)

Superhuman is probably the best word to describe them, it's like they 'know' the exact moment you're about to make a challenge and then all they do is make a sharp turn and prance passed your defenders. Let's be honest, they basically just take the piss :CONFUSE:

I did tune the user line height sliders down to 40, which seems to have made it a lot more 'manageable'.

I'll try changing the 'switch player assistance' up to high as well; to those who suggested it - thanks

I officially hate rainy pitch now. My Wycombe Wanderers are currently on a 9 game streak without winning, after about 15 consecutive rainy matches. Went from 7 points clear at the top now to 4th place. It completely changes the gameplay. :(

Just passed the first transfer window and no major transfers, not one, that's a first :)

Quite the opposite for me, there have been many big moves including geez to Milan and sneider to Manchester city. I have offers coming at me from everywhere for the on form players in my squad. Already negotiated a £30m deal for Podolski when his value is £15.5m who I will be looking to replace with the likes of benzema or someone with youth on their side. I've also been approached by a few clubs about the ox who I'm looking into getting £17.5-20m for which will be put towards either a winger or a CAM with my initial target being Nasri. I have had an offer in for cazorla but he isn't going anywhere. I am also in negotiations with the big spending PSG over Falcao with fees talked about in the region of £50-60m and if I do negotiate this for the correct price money will be reinvested primarily in the arsenal legend cesc fabregas and the remaining fees plus my current budget will look into pedro quite possibly and then get some scouts in to develop some youthful talent. My only signing up to now has been Oscar for £22.5m.

Really do love the way teams put in transfers for your in-form players. Come January, my GK had the most clean sheets in the league and I had offers coming out of my ears for him!

Emenike was also the top goalscorer in the league for me - had two big offers from Barce and Inter and managed to negotiate a deal for twice his value - £26 mill in the bank!

Nice one! He's not worth that much. Good deal.

Who are you playing as? Spartak Moscow?

Wolves :PP but I used the Financial Takeover catalogue item so made three big signings in Emenike, Schürrle and Ogbonna (all on very high wages, else they wouldn't budge).

And you say he's not worth that much but in the months between August and January, he had gained the complete forward badge! £26 mill doesn't seem so bad haha

So the summer transfer window has unfortunately closed, but I still managed to grab one more signing before it slammed shut - Punch Masenamela (i'm sure someone else mentioned him a while ago). He's a decent wee left back to be honest, better than Williams anyway :SMUG: I had to quickly snap him up after the news that Bhasera would be out for the next 7 months :(

In other news:

I got obliterated 3-0 away at Bolton in the League Cup.

Brosque has finally recovered from his injury! 8 weeks seems like a helluva lot longer when he's your designated goal machine :P
He came on for the final 10 minutes of my 2-1 win against Bournemouth.

Oh yeah and i've been approached by Paraguay, India and Egypt (I think it was), for their respective manager jobs already. All i've done is get Plymouth Argyle promoted from League 2 to League 1... O.O

I tried that in the past, hoping it'd help, but I don't think it made much difference. Honestly, I haven't noticed that much a change between High and Low for that controller option.

But I'll give it a go again and see if it helps.

That same exact problem has been bothering me too. What I've found that works though is switching players using the Right Stick. It's not always easy to do, but I've been able to use the stick to switch to the winger instead of the striker.

I like the rain conditions. Sounds like an excuse to me :P

This year, I think for the first time, I really like the rain too. It's harder and messier, but it's a fairly realistic change.

I also love how when you slide tackle in the rain, you slide quite far.

I really enjoy that the CPU cranks up the pressure when behind in the last 10 minutes. Although it can be real easy to turn the ball over when under such pressure, my suggestion is not to revert to a defensive formation, but instead to a more offensive one. Keep some players high up the pitch, put some people out wide and get better at playing keep away from the high pressure AI defense.

Once you get better at getting past that first wave of pressure, it's an almost guaranteed breakaway on goal. I probably get 1/3 of my goals in the last 10 minutes of each match in my career mode.

As for player-switching, I recommend against switching around a lot on defense. I attempt to play defense by putting the attacker on the ball under duress, and then intercepting the lower quality pass that results. To achieve this, I alternate between using the teammate pressure button (tactical defending mode, not the heat-seeking legacy defending mode) while I lie in wait to intercept... OR I do the pressing while forcing the dribbler toward my other teammates.

Player switching in FIFA isn't without value, but under duress, there's a lot of difficulty in switching to exactly the player you want. I think if you find yourself tapping the player switch button over and over again, you're about to get scored on. Certainly, you should play in a way that's fun to you and try to make it successful... for me, I like playing defense as a team unit and by creating lots of pressure high up the pitch. This works for me.

Good to know

To be honest I just really wanted someone called 'Punch' in my squad

LOL same exact reason I signed him!

Will my forest team ever get the respect they deserve or does the commentary always see me as an over achieving underdog each season

Well we were taken over 2 years ago, promoted last season and we're still a skint club in the lower leagues according to the commentary, could be worse, Southampton are still talked about being in the third tier of football, now that would be annoying this season!

So me and Blackpool are still running, after 8 games we lie 8th in the premier league table
Angelo Henriques has proven to be a truly wonderful acquisition with 6 goals bing enough to place second in the scoring charts, while centre back Fish is also having a wonderful season growing quickly as premier league experience is proving a vast learning curve for many players.
