Fifa 12 Career Mode Discussions

I'm lagging well behind, midway through season one with Newcastle and just ended a long winless run with a 1-0 win at home to Sunderland thanks to a 30 yarder from Obertan which bounced in off the post :)

That win puts me 9 points above the drop zone.

On the plus side, I sent my scouts out to Germany (looking to plunder IMO the best youth developing nation out there at the moment) and have signed three 15 year old players with a potential range between 65 and 83. Does anyone know what factors determine that you can get the most out of their potential once you sign them on pro contracts? Or is it just pot luck?

I'll have to try editing that too, having trouble scoring at the moment because it's only Le Tallec and Battles getting forward really. Aubameyang (Sure I spelled that wrong!) and Sako are fast but don't ever press. Blind presses more than Sako!
Managed just one win in my last three, one loss, one draw, and the one win in the cup.

Got to the winter transfer window, I'm planning to sell Ogude like he requested, and get rid of one of my many CMs, using that money to get a nice CAM (or maybe a nice CM and move Henriksen as CAM...it depends).

The board suddenly informs me that they've sold Ogude to Manchester City, I didn't even get to see the offer, and it was 7.5m, he was worth like 9! I could've easily gotten that money or a bit more, and I DID NOT want to make City a better club by giving them one of my star players. That's irritating.

They even had the courage to offer 5.5 for Zaha, when he's valued around 9 or 10!

IMO if you sim your matches, then yes, it would be by luck that they reach their max potential, otherwise, you would have to get them as much playing time as possible, or loan them out. For players that are already in the games data base and have good potential, their stats increase after many games of good performances (player rankings). The same follows suit with the youth system. I ended up loaning out a couple of mine since I had decent depth for my bench and few reserves, but I have older players that might retire soon, so until then, I am loaning out my signed youth if i have takers so that they get enough playing time.

Yeah, I don't get the last day of transfers either, I would think in a real life situation, if a club really wants to sell their player, they would make it a point to send you a response with enough time to wrap up the deal. It is pointless for them to agree to a deal when there is only one hour left, leaving you no chance to finalize the deal with the player...

Well I showed Anderlecht how to do business, I would have been happy to pay £4.4m but I reloaded my save from the start of deadline day, opened with an offer of £4m and it was accepted so got him for that, was also hoping to do a deal for a Mexican called Cabrera who seems very nice for DM/LB but couldn't raise the funds in time and they refused a loan with £6.5m purchase option (he's worth around £4m).

The Winter Window has closed, and Charlton are currently 8 points clear at the top of League One. Amazing considering I've been struggling (conceding late equalisers mainly) in recent games...

Most of the deadwood has now been farmed out, some had to settle for loans, but as long as I'm not paying them I don't mind! No-one came knocking for Canadian keeper John Smith (correct as always PLF!), who has gone from being valued at £400k, to £1.6m before the transfer window, to a now juicy £3.3m... He'll definitely need to be sacrificed if promotion happens. Hopefully he'll be worth a bit more by then as well. I'm getting used to having a keeper with big hair, jogging bottoms & green boots now though!

One of the Man Utd loanees, Will Keane, broke his ankle a week before deadline day, so cancelled his loan (£57k down the drain!) and brought in a young pacy striker from Birmingham, along with Lewis Grabban on a 4 year deal to challenge Bradley Wright-Phillips, who has also suffered a broken ankle.

Now on to the final push, and I'm having a good selection problem. All 6 of my CMs are fit, my VP is picking up several assists, and the strikers are all performing well when given the chance. Just hope they don't emulate the real life Charlton and throw it away... :)

So does playing youngsters actually help to aid their development in this game? I just kinda assumed that EA hadn't factored that in very much. Is there a noticeable difference? I guess the lack of specific first team coaching options would indicate that playing youth players or loaning them would be the only way available of raising their stats.

So if you have a youth player at 16 who's potential is 65-83, how high he reaches is dependant on the amount of game time? If so, then bravo EA, that would be a great move. I love the idea of having to give youth players first team experience in order to develop them.

Somehow I'm under the impression that players actually grow faster when you sim your games. I've just played an entire season with Vitesse and youngsters Van Ginkel (18 years old, 67 overall) and Chanturia (18, 72) managed to grow only a single point, while starting every game! Most of my players grow only one point and I don't think I've ever seen one of my own players grow more than two points in one season.

I think players who are considered as very promising but still have a 65-70 rating should grow relatively quick in their first season(s) (3 or 4 points), until they've reached 75 or so. After that the process may slow down a bit (say 2 points per season until they've reached their full potential). I've seen Eriksen from Ajax grow from 81 to 88 in one season (I did not manage Ajax, the CPU did), I don't like that at all.

I also think there should be maximum potentials per league. For instance, 82 or something should be the maximum in the Dutch league. Even though a player may have a potential of 85 or 90, in real life he will most likely never reach those numbers if he doesn't get transferred to a better league.

With Ogude's money and what I already had I bought Barry Bannan, he's got the Playmaker specialty so he should mix really well with Henriksen, and so far so good.

I switched my formation a bit so instead of a CM and a CAM now I have 2 CMs, with different work rates, Bannan moves a lot to create, and Henriksen stays a bit more to mantain his weaker stamina and to have space to take advantage of his Long Shot Taker trait.

Now here's something unexpected. City were REALLY after Zaha. Those stupid 5.5m offers were just the beginning, they kept raising those offers 'till I got a shocking 15.5m one, and I just couldn't resist. Specially since Russell was getting back from his injury and Hines was performing really well.

With that money and the 6m I got from Joe Ledley (he wasn't performing as I expected) I bought André Schürle, who has the Dribbler, the Clinical Finisher and the Complete Forward specialties, and he managed to get an assist and a goal in his debut.

The head office makes it a point to tell you to keep playing guys that have great potential, in a sense spoon feeding the fact that they need to play more if you want to see them reach their max potential. I only have 4 of these type of players on my current squad, 3 youth players, and one existing player for Alemania.

I had a couple awesome matches last night. I was creating some awesome chances, creative build-up play, a deft early cross that landed just over and between two defenders allowing my winger to make a one time shot that just barely missed. The same goes to the CPU creating chances, forcing my keeper to parry the ball over the crossbar, scrambles in front of my net due to a parried long shot from the CPU. Really great moments of frantic clearances, calm build-up play, great counter attack and defensive moments, great plays made from dead ball situations. Just a lot of fun! Close games too, some ties, some wins.

Can't wait to end this season to see what players I can bring in. I need a new keeper since my current guy (Donovan Ricketts) might retire, and my high potential youth is only at 61 overall. Besides that, I might try to bring in a class CAM or RM depending on my transfer season.

i have been a way playing PES, but by the looks of these posts, the real players/critics are loving CAREER MODE this year. is that a fair statement? might have to get back into it after the holidays.

I continued with Leeds, got my best player so far with Marcus Henriksen (I don't put him in a spoiler 'cause he's sort of known, not a hidden 'gem', so to speak) and Scott Sinclair. I still have problems to find a nice RB, I wanted Brayford but couldn't afford him after getting those other 2.

20 games into the season (give or take) and Ogude has been unsettled for like a month or so, and today he said he wanted to leave.

I don't know why, he was always one of my star players, but with a nice offer he'll just go, I'll look for a better replacement and that's it.

Henriksen's arrival has made "The Ogude attack" not so necessary now.

I had the bad luck to get all my strikers injured (Zaha, Russell and Hines), I had to play with a LW that could play in the ST position for some time, performing decently and luckily getting the help from the rest of the players to score goals. Hines is fully recovered now and back to scoring goals and even setting them up, Zaha's almost healthy, but Russell has like 7 weeks to be ok.

Right now I'm looking forward to selling the unsettled Ogude (and maybe one of the many CMs I have that don't have that many chances) so I can get a better CAM and maybe something else, like a CDM (I spotted a nice cheap one) or a RB (harder, 'cause the good ones are expensive and I need the CAM more)

Oh I simmed a match in the Champions League against Zurich (I was already qualified for the next round), we drew 1-1, and there was a comment from ME after the match saying something like the ref was wrong allowing their goal. That was pretty good, even if I can't do that manually.

You can't get Brayford anyway as he flat out refuses to go to Leeds. I actually transferred him into the team through edit mode so I could play with him.

One thing I noticed too was that I played with him for 2 seasons straight and he got no special attributes. But if he's with Debry he has loads of them at the start of the 3rd season.

Oh. I never got to making a contract offer anyway, they rejected my offers and after that I didn't have the money to get him anymore (I had to get someone else).

The scripting in this is almost as bad as PES. For some reason the game will NOT let me beat Wolves in the FA cup quarter final. First time of trying I was drawing 0-0, had hit the post 4 times, then in the 90th minute Hunt suddenly turns into Pele and skips past five men before drilling it in from 30 yards. Bullshit.

So annoyed with that, I replayed. Was winning 1-0 and dominated again, then in the 90th minute the CPU awards itself a penalty for minor bodily contact in the box and without me pressing ANY button at all. 1-1.

So I quit again. Third time, I'm 2-0 up with ten minutes to go, dominated the game again, when Defoe pulls off a goal from nothing practically the first time the CPU gets into my half. 2-1 with ten minutes to go, I know what's coming so I try and shut the game down. Then, yep, in the 90th minute and at the end of stoppage time, the CPU has the ball with a defender in his own half, he pumps a 60 yard long ball down the pitch, and for reasons only known by the CPU, Hunt is all alone and through on goal. 2-2, the game ends when I take the kick off. A replay shows Coloccini and Taulor BOTH marking Hunt, but when the ball is kicked, before control switches to them (as they're off screen at this point) they both run away from the ball and from Hunt, leaving him with acres of space to run in and score.

I call bullshit. That was scripted nonsense. It's just predetermined that you can't progress in the cup. Three games replayed, and in all three I get shafted in the 90th minute.

I see people complaining about scripting in both the Fifa and PES threads but the truth is there isn't any scripting in either games. I believe both developers have explicitly said that. In my CM I kept losing to Chelsea and quitting in frustration but I could see exactly what I was doing wrong each time. There are lots of things wrong with both games but scripting isn't one of them.

Placebo..4 mil for Kouyate is a mother-beautiful swoop.

Anybody else run into the problem with multiple transfers forcing you to redeclare the status of offers you have already agreed to and possibly forcing them to fail?

I've run into this too and worry it has tanked a couple of key negoitations.

LOL have you played PES2012? It's universally accepted that scripting does occur.

Anyways it's been a one off so far in FIFA, hopefully I won't see any of that crap again!

Started the season on World Class for the first time, beat Arsenal 3-1 in the Charity shield so thought hmm not so bad, next match Man City, lost 6-2, next match, Newcastle home, was losing 5-1 when I accidentally turned the xbox off So now I'm back to professional but 100% manual including no auto switching (got the achievement yay!) lowered pass error for both teams, enjoying it much more, teams I should beat I'm beating (example Stoke who I played twice in the space of 3 days I beat 4-1 and 3-0, against Man Utd I lost 6-2 but I played really badly so no complaints), Champions league is going great so far, Marseille I beat 3-0 at home then Bayern Munich 2-1 also at home, early days of course.

Yep definitely loving it.

Yep absolutely, really annoying and it seems it's always fringe players or crappy youths I'm really keen to get rid of who keep not going anywhere!

Well I got all my boxes delivered yesterday, after a couple of months waiting. So I ahve set up the xbox and started Fifa.

Blimey the new defending is hard isn't it, I played AFC Wimbledon and got beat 3-0  I think I have played about 10 games overall and have won 1 and drawn a couple.

I can't wait until I get the hang of it :DD you can tell it is much better and makes the game so much harder.

I play everything Manual and I haven't played Fifa for a long long time, so getting back used to manual and the new defending is going to take time, but although I am losing I am enjoying it.

Was 2-0 down to Newcastle on Professional (I was Arsenal) and came back to 2-2 and then they beat me 3-2 but it was at St James Park and was the first game of the season, then Liverpool beat me 1-3 at the Emirates :(( but still enjoyed it.

I might play around with the sliders a bit and see what happens :))

Also so glad my game face for VP works for this from the last game.

I find that defending is better when I a. don't sprint when within a few yards of the player, and b. I kind of manually 'guide' my player into the CPU player with the ball. He'll do a kind of auto tackle that's, for me, miles more effective than the tackle button. I only really use that for putting someone off when I'm not in a position to cleanly win the ball. And I generally use the contain button on the wings. Seems to put them off from crossing a lot.

Does anyone else here thinks that the calendar is messed up? I have a match against Tottenham on March 18th and then I play against Newcastle on the 20th, and I had 11 days to rest after a Champions League match.

I've said this a lot of times, I want to leave Leeds for a bigger club, so far the offers weren't good so I've stayed and built an awesome team, but the Premier League got a bit boring, even when some clubs like Wolverhampton got taken over and might start to build a better team in time.

Yeah that happens once or so a season for me as well where I have a game only 2 days after another which never happens in real life. In real life, you get a lot of matches 3 days after but never 48 hours after but it happens in this game here and there. At least it's not often... so i put up with it.

@Bobby, I do the same as Paul said. Basically sprinting is a BIG no no but I'm sure you already know that. That's unless you're chasing a striker who is already sprinting and ahead of you and you're trying to catch up to him of course, in which case you can use the 'tackle' button which in this year's version does a shirt-tug and actually slow him down. If you do that too repeatedly, the ref will call a foul but if you strategically use it every couple seconds lightly, you do pull the guy's shirt, you do slow him down a bit and there's no foul like real life either. :)

But yeah like Paul said, I barely use it anyway, it's more about using jockey and to contain and get close rather than actually putting in tackles. Defending was really hard at first but now I play on World Class and last season only conceded like 15 goals in 38 league matches! And yeah once you get a hang of it, it really is fun and a joy. I'm really glad FIFA took this bold step and put in Tactical Defending this year.

It happens more than once a season for me, it's really annoying 'cause they could just arrange the matches differently and it'd be okay.

For example, my left CB told me he felt like he wasn't getting enough minutes, my STARTING left CB. That's 'cause of the rotation system I'm forced to use so often. I loaded the save before that happened and made him play that match, even if it wasn't an important one (I simmed it both times).

I see. For me it's never happened more than twice in a season and usually it's even once.

But yeah I can see how that's really annoying.

Bizarre FA Cup match aside, I've really got into this now. My upturn in form has seen Newcastle pull away from the relegation zone and sit comfortably in 11th place, 9 points off the drop zone with 8 game's to play. A backs-to-the-wall battling 1-1 draw at Arsenal was followed up by a 3-1 beating of bottom club Norwich at St James' Park, then a resounding 5-0 thumping of West Brom away from home.

Away from tbe pitch I have some top prospects in my youth team now, trouble is that they don't seem to want to sign for me :(

I just had a run of four games in a week, cup and three league games due to rescheduling. I had to recall about four or five loaned players because of injuries and even got two youth players injured after recalling their loans :(
Season looking grim, need January to come on so I can make a move or two.
