That wasn't really my point, the point is that "casual" players follows hardcore players, therefore they drop a lot of sales in time.

FIFA always sold well because it's the official game full with licenses, give those licenses to Konami and everyone would buy PES instead, it's as simple as that.

PES 5 didn't sell so amazingly well because it was a game for casual people, it was the hardcore footballers dream come true. If you "knew anything about football", that was the game to play. Whatever people hear is the best/coolest/realistic game to play from people "in the know" they follow. It's not just in games, this is applied for all products in life (firefox anyone).

I say it again, the only reason FIFA is so big now is because of us PES people that are early adopters. FIFA 08 didn't have an amazing following directly, even if that game is pretty much the same as FIFA 09 that had more people coming. That's because it was still cool to hate FIFA back then. But time move on and more and more casuals hear from people that "knows their stuff" that FIFA is actually the "cool" game now and the migration starts to happen.

I remember seeing a video about the coca cola company showing that they get this, because they were out looking for group leaders, the people that the group of friends listened to/followed. So they made sure to understand exactly what that leader type wanted from them, what was important in life style and all (because it's not as straight forward as a football game). So they single out the people that they know others will listen to and that is how they grow bigger and bigger, not because they target casuals, that should always be the indirect target.

I mean that's the whole point of inviting people like Romagnoli and other football brains. So there are certainly people at EA that seem to get this, however I do think that people higher up in the company don't get this at all and still tells them to make sure casual people is the goal (because there are more casual people duurrrrrr duurrrr).

I'll finish this long post by saying that realistic doesn't mean that the game is harder to play so that casuals can't play it. They have this idea of what people think is "fun" which is based on this myth about less depth equals more fun.

Wow, you've been saying a lot of things in this post i've been saying. nice to see where on the same page :). The atmosphere in here is deep! It's similar to the atmosphere when England were dumped out of the world cup by Germany this summer and a huge, angry, inquiry erupted! Will FIFA become the new PES 2008? (i bet it will receive numerous high scores from journos  )

My biggest problem not is where are EA going with this game. This is something i've noticed and why i agree so much with you 'Seebass's vision' point. More or less the same team which started with him on PES back 17 years ago is still there and they all share the same aim. Konami trust Seebass and his team to do anything they want where over at EA this has never been the case.

I kept saying before why the hell did they get rid of Joe Booth and Ricour who really built this very impressive engine. Both had a very good understanding of football and a vision for fifa to be a sim game
EA aren't allowing this game to be taken to the next level simulation wise, they are constantly dubbing down the game for those kids!

What i can see happening is these sim players all moving to PES so if you want to play fifa online you just going to get a huge horde of kids using high pressure and 6-0-4. :CURSE:

What dosen't help is i've noticed a lack of understanding from the EA of the tactical side of football. Hence why it's so easy to create chances, because the defensive ai in regards to the defense and midfield don't work together at all!

Finally who is that guy in your avatar. I've seen a film with him in it ages ago, i think it was funny from hat i recall. It's bugging me every time i see you advatar :( can't remember his name :CONF: Or that film!

I agree with what you are saying about Booth but you've kind of answered your own question. If the guys at the top of EA Sports want the game to be fast-paced and accessible then does it really matter who's in charge of the project if their hands are tied to a certain extent. Personally I'd have liked to have seen Booth stay on as Fifa08 was a well-paced, methodical, solid football game, of which much of it's potential is still untapped.

no it's vitally, but is realism and detail.

is only 1 hair, no is very difficult, no? 3 year with same hair style....

The point is, raising such miniscule issues here is pointless, you should raise them on the EA forums where it will be noted and implemented (if it hasn't already which seems very likely).

If they've got 1 hair style wrong - and it's David Villa, how many others are going to be wrong? It's not just 1 hair, is it? When the game is released and his hair is accurate, he'll have another hair cut and there'll be uproar. Seriously, it'll be chaos... I hope we can change this via the editor :SNACK:

Where does it end? Gonad placement within shorts?

Honestly, it's the little things that really affect folk these days. They better have sorted CM out this time around. Every player can be bald as far as I'm concerned. Sort the fucking gameplay and bugs out.

I know

ATM i'm wondering why we are even going to bother with this game? What direction is it going?

The thing about Konami is, love or hate the direction they're taking (and the beta is the first next gen PES I've really got into, rather than develop a fever, have a strange metallic taste in my mouth and pull clumps of hair out of my head), at least the whole company is unified behind one vision of football - Seabass' vision - and that is geared very much toward the hardcore. EA keep hedging their bets and, even though the devs want to, they just aren't allowed to cut loose. EA say the speed is unchanged, but Adam came to the conclusion it was way faster independently of us, and not a single Guildforder thought the speed was untouched. Not saying they're BSing but something has clearly been sped up, deliberately or inadvertently when cleaning out the bugs.

We all agree and know what we want EA to do. They have the tweaking system this year; we need to instigate a mofo'ing campaign over on the official forums to get passing inaccuracy right up and game speed right down. If they haven't done so within a month or so of release then it's facepalm time.

EA must be either incredibly confident or blindingly stupid to say that the speed hasn't been changed. In 4 days time, a fair number of the guildford testers + more are going to play this game.

What I'm not liking is the close ranks action on the forum. I expect a lot of people to kinda say it looks fine either way, but some of the people who are saying it :/ It's not exactly going to help the cause. Frankly I'm sort of glad you're saying what you are as otherwise I might think I was going mad. The idea that these videos show a game which has moved on enough from FIFA 10 to overcome the issues online, especially in Clubs? Not in a million years.

Primary effort on Monday for me is to test the game to breaking point. Assist v Manual. Shit team v Good team. High pressure v football realism. Semi v Assist. One-twos, pingponging, et cetera. We must not fall into the trap of playing the game like we want to play it. Frankly I suspect the general theme of my thoughts after it may be along the lines of:

"unleash all hell". I sincerely hope not - but I'm really not willing to overlook any of this stuff.

What really worries me is that I think the same trap is being fell into as last year. People are overlooking the issues big time. The few things which are really broken in FIFA 10... really don't look fixed here. I wasn't really expecting the assists/semi/manual issue to be fixed, I wasn't even that expectant that the pressure would be fixed, but I was at least fairly happy that the gamespeed and defensive AI would be vastly improved. Instead, I find it hard to see what has improved. There are clear areas where it's different, and yeh, in a minor sense improved, but the major problems.. hmm.

Fuck me, at least F1 2010 looks stellar :APPLAUD:

half hour? More like 3 seconds choosing the correct one from the database, the point is how old was the GC build? When did Villa cut his hair?

I was just thinking the same thing when I decided to boot up FIFA07 again last night. I mean, there are plenty of subtle improvements that you can pick out from these latest videos but I'm seeing the same flaws I used to associate with the PES series turning up in my FIFA (like stuttering animation, cartoony-quick transitions, ball automatically positioning itself to feet!!!) But above all, it's the predominantly unrealistic pacing left me with a very bad taste. I love all things graphical tech so naturally I became a very big proponent on the fundamental animation concepts that were introduced in FIFA07 (momentum, footplanting, IK, etc) that made the game seemed like such a perfect foundation to build the series upon but never did I imagine that it would evolve this way.

@ Ronaldinho,

I think the overrriding point is, if the game's core is still crap nobody will be playing it anyway. So the hair becomes a non issue. That's the perspective we have over here.

What about tanning? Rooney must clearly be more tanned now than in January, not!? They HAVE to implement that into the game!! I will be devastated if I cant run around on icy field with a chalky white Rooney.

Does anybody want my gamerbase place to play FIFA 11 next Tuesday 12-4 in London ? I'm gonna be busy on the day. First PM gets it.

Jesus:SHOCK: You can lose to a newbie also in PES and in any other sports game.

Well, back when I was a hardcore PES 1-6 player, a newbie could not defeat me. I could basically toy with him and win at will. Thats just not possible with FIFA nowadays because almost any casual gamer can beat a hardcore player due to how the game works. (except Manual, but thats not the default way of playing...
