Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Do you guys think they've fixed so that more than one player can try to kick/head the ball? I don't know how many of you that play BAP or CYC but it's really annoying when you're trying to head the ball but you can't because the game has chosen another player to be the only one to try to head the ball. This results in that your player screams "shoot". This is very annoying at times because if you want to pass the ball it result in you telling you mate to pass the ball to you, which isn't what you wanted at all.

There shouldn't be a limit of who can try to head a ball. I actually think this worked well in PES if I'm remembering correctly.

Yes, i am very happy to se someone realised that. In pes, i remember very clearly from a replay, once 6 player jumped to head the ball. They pushed each other, one fell, another missed the ball, the stronger managed to head the ball but it was very difficult position to hit the target etc. Very realistic actually. In fifa, always one and one, so no other defender loses the position, and attacking and defending becomes similar every time, consequently, game bores you little while later...

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

The mysteries are finally being revealed in E3! The new online revolutionary system that will appear on all EA Sports games could be seen in the latest NBA Live 09 video. It won't be 5 vs 5 online or 10 vs 10 online, in case of FIFA09, it will be DAILY PLAYER UPDATE, creating a REAL DAILY SCENARIO for the teams.

With that we will have accurated players and teams everyday we'll play online with them, and not only 3 or 4 times yearly updates. that will really be revolutionary since the virtual games will be as close as the real things as possible. If that's confirmed, and i think it will be, it's a truly change in sports games, DYNAMIC AND ACCURATED DAILY ROSTERS. For exemple, we won't have to wait 3 months to play with a better fabregas online, or with a much worse ronaldinho and henry, that will create room for a lot more teams for we play with online!

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Well probably not for all leagues though? I have a hard time beliving they will update 16000 (or whatever number of players there are) players every day or even once a week. That's a lot of players to keep track on. I can see them doing it for EPL, serie A and Spanish first maybe. The reason NBA and NFL could do it is because of much less players obviously.

it they could do that than it will REALLY be REVOLUTIONARY! i think it's possible if they create a program to change the players atributes based on their games stats, of course in the case of FIFA the update would be more weekly than daily since there's not football games everyday and most of them are only on weekend, so that gives them more time to keep updating things, are more players but it don't necessarily need to be done daily.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

The FIFA 09 demo will be available online for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 11th.

however that preview sounds like euro 2008 with some added things

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Sounds awesome

Apart from the speed and excessive punching and parrying parts

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Sounds great apart from the two things, Pace and Parrying. Alo whats with the revolutionary feature with daily updates of players? they dont really need it?

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

lol pes is like robot wars, hope its better this year, get bored of playing just one footy game

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Well, an interesting turn of events with the Daily Rosters Update. Sounds like an easy excuse for a feature though as the European transfer window means they will only be busy in January really :SS. The stat changing seems odd too, I hope that if say Fabregas has a bad game for Arsenal one week, they don't suddenly reduce all his stats by 10 points the next day. I can see EA doing something stupid like that tbh.

Here's something I personally translated for you guys from: http://fifamexico.net/start/

Enjoy!

FIFA SOCCER 09

We had the opportunity to play FIFA09 for the PS3 and based on the time we spent playing it, this is what we can anticipate to you all. But before anything else, we have to say that this version of the game was a beta version in which there is still much work being done, since the final version is still not finished just yet.

Fortunately this version already has all the leagues and commentators; therefore we went directly to what interests us most. We chose the Mexican commentators, Ricardo Pelaez and Perro Bermudez, and we played a match between Cruz Azul vs America.

Gameplay

The rosters were up do date and current, some of the number on jerseys were not correct, however the team formations were indeed up to date. The game commenced and we immediately saw the difference of fluid animations in passing and movement of players. The player’s movements looked much more fluid and natural.

The real surprise came when I found myself with the extreme desire to slide tackle….it was such a realistic and fluid animation and I tackled exactly where I wanted to. I enjoyed it so much that I continued slide tackling just to see how my player would react and behave at different angles and situations. I continued to be graciously impressed at all the different types of tackles which looked as if the player was realistically launching himself at trying to catch something, rather just falling down to tackle as was the case in FIFA08.

Not only did I love the new tackles, but also the reactions of the players being tackled. At times, I would launch the player into a tackle and successfully win the ball which resulted in the other player realistically flying into the air, other times when I got the player instead of the ball, the player with the ball would fall to the ground in accordance with the laws of physics with regard to the speed and the angle to which he was clipped. Other times it looked as if the player with the ball was stumbling to his fall after a badly timed tackle, however he would quickly regain his balance and continue to run. The collision animations have definitely been improved. There was another occasion where two defenders were going for the ball, I tackled for the ball with one defender and took out the other defender. Based on the speed and close proximity of where the defender fell, one of my team players also tripped and fell to ground accordingly.

However this would not be the end of my admiration, on one play I performed a hard tackle on an opposing player from behind but didn’t manage to take him down, the player continued with the ball, passed it, his teammate advanced and passed it back to a third player who unleashed a powerful shot that grazed over the bar. As soon as the play was over, the referee came back to my player and handed him a yellow card for his dirty attempt at taking the player down seconds earlier. When I saw the yellow card, I immediately remembered what it was for. I had actually forgotten the whole ordeal.

The new collision engine is not limited to just slide tackles and collisions, but also in strength. On one occasion I had the ball controlled with Juan Carlos Mosqueda, a very fast player however very short in stature, Torrado(a stronger and much taller player) immediately directs himself to Mosqueda for a shoulder-to-shoulder tussle. As he gets closer I decide to force my player’s shoulder/weight to the oncoming Torrado as I’ve done in FIFA08. This attempt however was an exercise in futility as I saw my Juan Carlos Mosqueda literally fly into the air as he got manhandled by Torrado’s stronger and much more physical attributes. This ofcourse resulted in Torrado winning possession of the ball.

On a second time around instead of trying to outmuscle Torrado shoulder to shoulder, I put to use Mosqueda’s speed and agility to get around him with ease. By utilizing EA’s design of agility and speed vs strength and muscle and vice versa it really benefited to my favor, I was really impressed how this function worked flawlessly to perfection.

In situations of one-on-one with the GK, many improvements have also been made in the keeper’s reaction and agility. First thing I want to note is that the soft grounders that always ended up in the goal on one-on-one situations against the GK as was the case in FIFA08 are practically impossible to accomplish this time around. The only possible solution would be to use some creativity to get past the GK. On one play as I faced the keeper I decided to maneuver around him as he went the other way, however he suddenly managed to extend his right leg just enough to cause me to lose control of the ball. The second time around his right leg didn’t touch my legs with enough strength to cause me to lose control which resulted in me keeping my composure for a score. On a third time around his right leg did touch the ball and deflected it with enough strength to push it to the side for a corner kick leaving me with no possibility to recover it for a score.

The first time shooting and passing also received an impressive improvement. Now you won’t be frustrated when the ball falls into your path from a cross, corner, or rebound and you try desperately with futility to bang it first time as the player takes an eternity to execute it. This time if you want to bang it first-time considering that the ball is near you, you will be able to do so. Even if the ball is not quite within reach for a perfect one-timer, your player will still try to get a shot off on goal by sliding into the ball or dive for a header if need be depending on the situation. The same will apply with passes and loose balls.

For those that played EURO2008, you will be happy to know that the manual celebrations will make a comeback in FIFA09. Therefore after you score, you can trigger one of many goal celebrations that you so desire via the controller buttons.

The speed of the game in general is faster and more fluid. The AI has also improved whether playing against it or with your own team. On general terms I believe that the gameplay without a doubt is one of FIFA09’s biggest strengths this time around.

Audio

We’ve always suffered with badly implemented and out of synch commentators in FIFA games here in Mexico. However thanks to the fans who pointed these errors out in the FIFA Mexico EA sports forums, those errors have been fixed. In the time that I played the game, I did not notice any errors in the commentary department in relation to what was happening on the field at that moment. The interventions from commentator Ricardo Pelaez during the game sounded more assertive. I also didn’t experience any audio disruptions where the commentators would remain mute for periods of time during the game. Therefore you can be glad that the audio and Mexican commentators have been improved this time around.

In regards to atmosphere sound and chants, I did here some new chants and noticed a difference in them with regard to home and away teams. There were chants specifically tailored for the home team as there were for the away team.

Atmosphere

In the atmosphere as I mentioned above, there were many changes specifically in relation to the league you’re playing in. Since the majority of time I spent playing in the Mexican league, as soon as the game begins you see the streamers coming down. You see the sponsor banners on the floor next to the soccer goals on each side and all this really makes you feel like you are really in a Mexican stadium watching a Mexican league match.

Also to improve the atmosphere in FIFA09 the fans have been divided into 3parts, home fans, Visiting Fans, and Neutral fans who simply show up to enjoy and bask in the atmosphere of the beautiful sport that is futbol. Specifically when I played a game as a visitor against Santos, the entire stadium was dressed in Santos colors. On one end there were a large number of fans with streamers, and flags, jumping up and down the entire time, it looked and felt like you were indeed the visiting team and this was their turf. On the other end of the stadium, there was a much smaller group of fans; however they were also showing their full support and enthusiasm wearing the colors of their team CD America. They clearly looked like those fans that travel with the team.

The atmosphere has indeed been greatly improved in and out of the pitch. In Manager Mode at the top of the front page news section, it has the TELEVISA DEPORTES logo. In the team selection screen, depending on which team you select to play with, you immediately see the transition from the default arena to the in-game stadium pitch full of supporters as you warm up your keeper before kickoff. Here you can continue to shoot at the keeper as you would in the default EA arena. To begin the match you would simply press the corresponding button as you would in the default arena.

Conclusion

FIFA09 looks like it took some long strides from its previous title and shows that EA Sports is clearly listening to what the consumer asks for in their titles. The speed and reaction times most definitely do not suffer as it did in FIFA08, the animations are spectacular! The regionalization has been a change that will add more flavor to the franchise. In short, if you enjoyed FIFA 08 and EURO 08 you will be enamored with FIFA 09.
