Mourinho sets title target

New Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has promised to deliver the Premiership title to the London club within four years. "I am not afraid to say this, I don't say we are going to win next season," Mourinho told British newspapers on Sunday. "I cannot because there are top teams, top coaches, top managers in England.

"One thing I will promise. If you give me four years I will win the championship."

Chelsea have only lifted the championship once in their 99-year history, in 1955.

Mourinho, who last week replaced the sacked Claudio Ranieri at Stamford Bridge, wants to build his team around England midfielder Frank Lampard.

"I love Frank Lampard," said the former Porto manager. "He is the kind of player you want in modern football because he can adapt to anything.

"He has the type of qualities I want in a player. When I look back at my time with Porto, if someone had told me I could have Lampard in my team, he would have been straight in."

thats a bit unfair! abramovich only gave ranieri a year but mourinho gets 4 years to win the title :l ? does that means he's getting the sack too?

so why didn't ranieri get at least 3 seasons to bring the title to the bridge?

i don't think mourinho would of signed if it was a 1 season contract.

anyway its harsh on ranieri he must of got on abramovich nerves big time

Its a 4 season contract. It is harsh, but he knew it was going to happen. Ranieri just was not as good a manager. His mistakes in the semis cost him.

Oh really? Soccernet was wrong then. They have bene wrong and changed their headlines before. Because at first they said King would step up to replace Terry, but then they soon changed it to Carragher. Sorry bout that.

Hmm, looks as if Drogba is actually interested in a move to Chelsea. :-k You know, if he did move, i could see Mourinho playing him alone upfront, perhaps with a supporting striker (Gudjohnsen or attacking midfielder) 5 in midfield though.

According to the guardian Cuddly Pete is sorting the deal to bring deco to the bridge for about £18mill.

so thats the porto coach, fullback and now midfielder. Do you think chelsea are trying to buy and recreate porto's success

Whats wrong with that, if success comes, than its a good thing isnt it. Anyway, there was news linking us with Gerr again, dont think its possible though.

More a coach who knows which players he likes to work with, i'd say, and vice versa.

I think it's ok if Mourinho bring Deco to Bridge, Deco can help the squad. And I dont think Mourinho will only buy the Porto's player in the summer, you know what i mean.

And you can see the difference of Portugal squad after Rui Costa replaced by Deco.

We'll take Hasselbaink for you ;)

Jimmy Floyd is better than Mutu and Crespo, they are wannabe's and don't deserve to be playing with players who have given there all for Chelsea this season (Lampard, Terry, Hasselbaink, Bridge) etc.

I agree mate, for all the money they spent the best players we're the ones already there.

And for all the money apart from the porto players the likes of Carlos, and Morientes dont wanna join chelsea, neither does Ronnie or nedved, I reckon its gonna be like last summer and you's will get a new lot of mutu's and crespos.

Mutu has the talent. Just wasnt able to show it this season with the rotation, however with Mourinhos new policy, it must be easier.

Wow - nobody's mentioned Gerrard's wanting to move to Chelsea on this thread yet???? Just read it on Soccernet.

I heard today on Sky Sports News that Deco has stated he is on the verge of a move to Chelsea after Euro 2004, following coach Jose Mourinho. They say he'll sign the contract once the tournament is over.

huiahiahiau , mourinho, deco , costinha, what's next?

carlos alberto, derlei?

There's that laugh again Fred  . It's true, Deco will take a medical after Euro 2004. Who's next? Well, maybe Drogba. Marseille are enquiring about Samuel Eto'o, who they see as a replacement for Drogba. They'll certainly have the cash for him if Abramovich forks out too.
Meanwhile, Desailly fancies a move to Marseille. Now there's an opportunity to offload the guy ;) I don't think he can hack it anymore at the top of the game.

I hope so, yeah they faired well in a knockout tourney but failed to impress in the league, there gonna get a shock playing in The Prem.

Decos close according to BBC. Still dont think that the Gerrard thing will ever happen.

I understand that football is now a squad game but Mourinho isn't one for tinkering like his predecessor Ranieri. How is he going to accomodate these players next season? I see a few players getting angry this season. Parker and Cole for sure. I would imagine his line up would look a little simlar to something like this, judging by the squad as it is right now:

Carlo Cudicini

Paolo Ferreira
William Gallas
John Terry
Wayne Bridge

Damien Duff
Frank Lampard
Deco
Arjen Robben

Adrian Mutu
Hernan Crespo

Thoughts Chelsea fans?

It's funny but I was just thinking about this subject after reading Costinha expects to be at Chelsea. Your midfield seems to be missing a holding player so that means that Frankie L is out? I don't think so. So maybe Deco would play off one striker. And i don't think that either of the two forwards you mentioned will be upfront. I think he will prefer Gudjhonnson. Something tells me that Frank Lampard is going to end up leaving Chelsea. I don't think that Lampard or John Terry buy into this new concept.

I think alot of midfielders will be unhappy by the end of the season. Too many quality players for the same position.

Might be good because it forces players to be at their best to keep their spot.

As a chelsea fan this will b my favoured line up.

----------------------cudicini-----------------------------
paulo ferreira-gallas-------terry---------bridge-----
robben-----makelele------lampard--------duff------
--------------------deco--------------------------------
---------------crespo/mutu/gudjohnsen----------------

with regards the forwards id just see who is on the top of their game at the time.

Robben is a left midfielder, if you were a good chelsea fan, you would have known that ;).

Cudicini
Ferreira
Gallas
Terry
Bridge
Joaqin (Who Knows)
Makelele
Lampard
Robben
Crespo
Gudjohnsen (Depending how Mutu plays next season)
