Champions League 2011/12

Damn it Valon! I was starting to let go then you reminded me. :D

The timing of that penalty was just bad for Milan. The team finally got confident after scoring and was starting to loosen up. As Ben said, it is not a mistake by the ref, but don't do this now. Stop the play and have the chat.

No doubt Barcelona deserved to go through and played much much better football but you can't deny Milan could have sneaked a qualification. Barcelona were missing a lot of chances yesterday and were not efficient in front of goal. Then Milan got the edge in the Nocerino goal then this happened.

Coulda Shoulda Woulda but it didn't! Congrats Barcelona.

@drekkard: Antonini didn't say it was blatant, he said he slipped longer than necessary because of the wet pitch. Excuses. Zlatan is the one who said he should have got a penalty but I saw that dive before it even happened.

yesterday, this boy call "dogs" to barcelona players...

If you really think all that, you live in a different reality to everyone, including Antonini, who said the penalty was blatant. Good luck with it.

Put it on mute (that is important!) and skip to 1:59.
YouTube - Lionel Messi vs AC Milan (H) 11-12 HD 720p by LionelMessi10i [Cropped]

I would probably give the penalty myself if I was the ref. I'm only bringing this up because we have the replay from a different angle.
But exactly on 1:59 you see a bit of theatrics there by the Argentine. Like I said, I've seen him absorbing much stronger knocks and carrying on. Messi had it under control and he most probably would have scored if he tried reaching for the ball. But if he felt that the contact has given him disadvantage there and thought it should have been a foul, then fair play to him. I won't be calling him a cheat for that, even because he's not that sort of player.
There's no use discussing it further as there was definitely contact there, so I will leave it at that.

But when I say it is debatable it's not a different reality, believe me. Maybe my perception has been skewed away from the continental style of refereeing. I've been watching Premier League football for too long and I've seen much clearer penalties not being given in England.

Its hard to know what a player mind set at the moment. Sanchez pen not given ,puyol shirt pull so hard in front of ref , he looked like a flying kite. Interesting how the pens in the 1st match were similar to the 2nd. Im sure Milan players probably felt a shirt pull again wouldnt be penalised or a bump on the player in the box wouldnt either. Messi was probably thinking I wont get the pen anyhow....how does these refs work.Players are guilty of ref cracking as to safe cracking each safe has a different link as do refs and thats the biggest shame really. I remember Arshavin getting a penalty and he nodded his head then took it and miss kick the ball out! on purpose. I was shocked n dismay .How many players would do that?

He said it WAS penalty but said the fault was to the pitch. But he said it was. That's what I said it's a blatant penalty when even the tackler says it is!

I said it before, you live in a very different reality from the world if you think this is theatrics.

By the way, I watch the Premier regularly, you're not the only one, and I've seen a lot less clear penalties given, and a play like this would have been whistled penalty almost everywhere, and in some cases and depending on the referee it would have been even a red card.

I won't waste any other minute answering Barcleona haters. They make this thread poorer and I don't want to contribute to that anymore, the same way I ceased to read/answer to Ronaldinho_23 a long time ago.

Ambrosini could've had like 3 yellow cards but ended the match with NO yellow!!

Anyway, I'm with Ben. Wayyyyyyyy too much talk about the ref who was far from perfect but not as bad as people make it out to be either. He made some good decisions and some bad ones but they benefitted and harmed more teams.

I gotta tell you though, I'm yet another neutral like Ben and Gerd and it's becoming very apparent who the Barca haters are. They'll tell you they're not, but these people jealous by the success this team has and often over their own team that's been ass-raped by the Catalans at some point in the past few years, will look for ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING to point fingers and blame the club.

Seeing all the Barca haters voice their biased opinions is as funny as seeing 9-year old Ronaldinho guy post every day with pictures and one liners. :D

Oh yeah! I misunderstood you. Yeah Antonini and even Allegri acknowledged that penalty. No doubt. Milan got much softer in the league this season.

Gerd - I never said Ibra should've got a penalty. No chance in hell he should've got one.

Again - I don't think we would've definitely won, and I'm sure Barca would've found a way to score one way or the other... but my frustration lies with the way the match happened. I think I deserve every right to be pissed off at the way the flow of the game was destroyed by that penalty. The game had few stops by the ref... yet for a miniscule incident, a penalty is given.... taking away Milan's confidence and making Barca calm.

Anyway... I haven't read anything in here since Gerd's post this morning... so I may have missed a lot...

Gerd - I never said Ibra should've got a penalty. No chance in hell he should've got one.

I misunderstood you, i'm sorry Stef.

And yes, i can understand your frustration. Like i said in an earlier post, as a neutral i would have liked things being more difficult for Barcelona...Milan were also unlucky with the 3d goal (unlucky ricochet and the ball drops before Iniesta's feet, who finishes beautifully..)

I don't think anyone is saying Barca didn't deserve to go through - they're the best team in club football history - of course they deserved to go through.

But, at that point in the match the tie was still in the balance. It was 1-1, Milan technically were going through.

There's no way to play out the what if scenarios of course, but the reason that neutrals are so frustrated is that for just a second the tie was genuinely interesting. Maybe Barca would have gotten nervous. Maybe Milan would have grown in confidence. So forth.

But instead, and this isn't the first time we've seen it, Barca get a get out of jail free card, in the form of a TERRIBLE decision. Now that I've seen replays and the timing of it, the ref is wrong in multiple situations:

1. The ball was not yet in play. Hence, a good ref would have pulled the players over, told them no more shirt pulling and then blown for the kick to be taken. This is seen every match, more or less.

2. Given that Busquets was already on the floor when he DID blow his whistle (shock) he must have made his mind up BEFORE he'd even seen the corner taken. There's no way he could have watched both incidences happen concurrently. So in his mind he was so keen to give the penalty that he wasn't even paying attention to the actual corner itself.

3. Busquets grabs Nesta's jersey just as firmly as the Italian does when contact is initiated - the only reason it was so bad was that Nesta continued to hold on after Puyol had essentially rugby tackled the defender to create a pick and roll situation. Had Nesta let go, then Puyol would have gotten away with a blatant foul, and Busquets would have been running free onto a header, 10 yards from goal.

Anyway, is it a foul by the letter of the law? Absolutely. As is just about every single free kick and corner situation in modern football. If you think that UEFA are happy with the official's decision, I'll bet you £20 that particular ref doesn't get another game in the CL this or next season.

I disagree with Lo Zio - refereeing in football has to be more about consistency than just adhering to the rules as they're written. Unlike most sports, part of the beauty of football is the interpretative side of officiating. Some refs are more lenient than others about physical contact, some give cards rarely, others issue them like blackjack dealers. Because it's a human being making decisions, there will always be differences between human beings. But there shouldn't be differences between the way that a single referee judges decisions. And in this case, there most definitely was.

Anyway, I just believe he was a weak ref, and gave into the pressure of the occasion. There's no conspiracy of any of that crap.

It's a shame really to go on about referees, but when there's too much talk of it is because the ref wasn't good. When the ref "steals" the show becoming the topic of the week, then you know how bad he has been.
If it wasn't for that penalty, probably Barça would still win it. But there's the thrill of seeing the other team playing to their strengths and we know anything can happen in football. All the ref did yesterday was killing all the fun out of it. I almost fell asleep during the 2nd half.

I'm not a Barcelona hater, in fact I supported them and followed them closely in 99-2000-2001, with Rivaldo, Kluivert, Figo, Cocu...
But now I'm more of a neutral and, as a neutral, I hate to see refs spoiling the game. After the 2nd penalty I started rooting for Milan instead, as it was so unfair.

As I said, this takes the brilliance out of their performance. This current Barcelona is brilliant, legendary, one of the best of all times. It's hard enough to beat them without the interference of referees.

Pep Guardiola pointed out how Barcelona has been in the semis for 5 consecutive years and this is the result of hard work. Fair enough. But just look at those knockout stage encounters: every year there's controversy and more often than not it's Barcelona being benefited. Whether it's a dodgy penalty, a red card for Van Persie after shooting on goal fractions of seconds after the whistle was blown in a 100 thousand capacity stadium, Chelsea having 4 denied penalties at Stamford Bridge... wow, well done Pep! ;)

Benfica has all 4 center backs injuried (Luisão, Garay, Jardel and Miguel Vitor). We'll be using defensive midfielder Javi Garcia and left back Emerson as CB... Our chances are reduced to 15%, but...

Bold prediction: Emerson will step up and become a top cb after this game. :P

We're f*cked. :(

man, i used to love Barcelona. I really did

people like this Ronaldinho_23 guy (believe me, everyone here in mexico behaves like that since EVERY-FREAKING-ONE jumped on the Farça bandwagon), and blatant FC Saintalona bullshit in the last few years definitely changed my mind. Now even if they are the best team ever, they still act like saints and defenders of football while being bigger pussies than the jonas brothers.

i mean, just look at this crap:
ie2d7s.jpg

totally unbelievable.
why would the best players in the world would need to do that?

if i were Messi, i would kick the penalty to the stands.. they dont need that crap, he could have scored a beautiful goal anyway as he always does.

i dont know, i'm just sad and frustrated.
here in mexico had to made up something at work to go watch the game during mealtime, and it dissapointed me how it ended.
i mean, it looked promising when Milan scored.. looked like it was going to be epic..
but meh, this Barcelona dissapointed me more than PES1012.. and that's saying a lot!

:(

Always, always the same. UEFA better select the teams they want before the start of the competition.

What a "fucking disgrace".

The duality of the ref is mind blowing. MIND BLOWING. I can't stand watching this shit anymore.

I hope Barça destroys Chelsea in the semis.

If we had been awarded the clear penalty we should have in the first leg, and without the disparity of tonights ref we would have a chance.

This way, there's nothing we can do.

SLB are , well were playing Chels off the park. Aimar looks so 70ish along w/ their coach , what up w/ that hair style.

What a goal by KAKA :O amazing really , world class , good to see this guy scoring and backing in his old days
