Luisão should see a contract improvement, and should stay at all costs. We can't sign a good defender with his age, experience and leadership with the money Fiorentina is offering for him.
Besides that, our defense is really young, there's no one in the 25-29 age besides Luisão.


I'm really looking forward for the Milan game. Hopefully I'll be posting our goals directly from the stadium!

Don't agree.
As you said, Benfica have made some impressive signings but Porto and Sporting are worse this year. I mean, Sporting mantain the same squad but they are playing awful this season. FC Porto sold Lucho and Lisandro and there isn't (at the moment) any decent replace for them (maybe Belluschi in Lucho's case).

More than ever I say: THIS IS OUR YEAR!

Don't be fooled into thinking Porto is weaker. Don't forget: there is a huge momentum behind them. Four championships in a row, good CL participations, some domestic cups... They have the mentality, and, well, I don't have to mention the extra football events that tend to occur (Lisandro's penalty against Benfica in Antas, I'm looking at you) when they are at a weaker point.

So, all in all, it won't be easy. If we can keep this winning streak, and with the supporters following and giving it all for the team, it will be difficult to stop us.

Javi Garcia has won me over, big time. I had some doubts, but, after his entrance against Guimarães... What a huge difference.

Also, I'm terrified of loosing Aimar! There is no replacemente for him (if only the Maestro had less 5 years...)

Ate chega a parecer que no ano passado tínhamos uma copia do Aimar deste ano, nem parece o mesmo. A diferença que é meter um jogador destes numa posição adaptada, para a qualidade que dá a equipa na posição natural.
Até agora, só o Ramires é que tem coisas a provar aos Benfiquistas, tem de nos mostrar o que vale e que vale o investimento. Agora é manter a forma e não se deixarem ir abaixo.

Btw, o Jesus parece daqueles players de FM que só curtem jogar com equipas pequenas, quando têm uma grande, compram uns jogadores bons metem uma formação ofensiva e ganham o campeonato, quando digo jesus digo Trapatonni. Espero bem é que o mantenham durante mais anos do que aos outros e sinceramente, parem com os pedidos de "Campeão no 1º ano" tem sido assim desde o Trap e tem sido smpr merda, esperem 1 ano que seja (dirigido a: Adeptos impacientes & LFV/Rui)

I watched the end. Benfica were lucky really. They didnt take their chances and looked pretty average really. I was glad the penalty was saved too as Saviola dived to win it.

I was there, unfortunately at the oposite side of the key plays. Both were penalties? Any other mistake by the referee?
Benfica played well in the second half but the first... hum. Maritímo were very lucky at the end.

@Jumbo: English TV broadcasts Portuguese League?!?! Amazing! Didn't know that.

Crap sunday! First, I was at Estoril seeing them lose and then Benfica draw!

Mantorras would be there only for the first half, then sub him for some1 to the midfield and swap him with Nuno. The rest we haven't really seen and i think that with a 4 goal margin JJ could actually try something along these lines. What do you guys think? will he do experiences or not?

I'd go with:

Julio Cesar, Ruben Amorim, Sidnei, Miguel Vitor, Shaffer; Yebda, Coentrão, Ramires (sub at half time), Peixoto, Nuno Gomes, Keirrison...so, mostly second choices. But still, balanced team.

Mantorras isn't in Benfica list for Europa League, Neo.
I'd also go with your squad, #71. Maybe put Luis Filipe instead of Ruben Amorim just to rest.

Oh yeah i knew i was missing something in there. I missed on Yebda and Mantorras not being in the list. My mistake then. I agree with #71 also.

O Setúbal até parece ter alguns jogadores razoáveis, o problema está no esquema do Azelha, perdão, Azenha.
Quanto a nós, parece que estamos no trilho certo. Mais uma exibição convincente (pudera) com a equipa a mostrar entrosamento nesta fase tão precoce da época. Muito bem.

8-0 e o Jesus a refilar com a equipa aquando dum lançamento da linha lateral do Setúbal porque o Benfica não estava a fazer pressão alta. :)

O Setubal é das piores equipas do campeonato, sem duvida. Nem na segunda liga se safavam...
Já agora o treinador deles não era aquele que o B.Carvalho se ganhasse queria ver como treinador do Benfica?

Acho que vocês estão a ser um pouco duros com o Vitória de Setúbal. Se compararmos este plantel com o da época passada vemos que é superior em termos de individualidades. Kaz, Sandro, Zoro, Álvaro Fernández e Hélder Barbosa são disso exemplos. O problema está no senhor Azelha. O homem deve ter tirado o curso de treinador na farinha Amparo! Ele não percebe nada mas mesmo nada de futebol! Até o tosco (mas sempre dedicado e apaixonado pelos sadinos) Carlos Cardoso percebe mais de bola do que esse tipo a quem chamam treinador. Temo seriamente pelo futuro do Vitória enquanto este senhor estiver à frente dos destinos do clube.

O homem veio com a ideia de imitar o Carvalhal mas esqueceu-se que é preciso ter uma certa estrelinha para defender e contra-atacar. Ah, e ter um peçanha na baliza. Estes vieram para defender com 5 e (outra vez) meter o autocarro na baliza. Mas o aimar, ramires e o di maria tavam endiabrados e partiram-lhes as pernas.
O homem falhou completamente na táctica e os jogadores perderam a motivação nos 3-0, a partir dai só queriam que o jogo acabasse depressa.
Nunca as outras equipas do campeonato, tiveram tanta cagunfa de vir à luz. lol

Would it be possible to speak in 'English' guys? Because Portuguese speaking people aren't the only ones who care about Liga Sagres and the likes of Benfica and some of us are interested and would like to understand what is being discussed when we look upon threads like this. :)

If not, I understand. But it'd be nice if you could all 'try'.

Saviola and Javi Garcia are doing great...I have no idea how Real Madrid fans could rate Garcia so badly...he has been amazing so far. Benfica fans joke about them calling 'Paquetons' to lots of their players. We want paqueton Granero for next season ;)

He's doing great for someone who haven't played much for the past 2 years...2 goals (other 4 in friendlies), a couple of assists, suffered 2 penalties..

Glad to hear! Javi is good. Not great but good and I remember a certain Benfica fan I don't remember who right now, all pi$$ed off when this transfer went through, saying who the hell is he! We don't want Madrid reject, etc.! But with Katsouranis gone, I told him, Javi could be a very good purchase.

Still to early to tell of course. Time will tell. :)

And glad to see Luisao stay! There were talks of him going to La Viola but I think this is best for player and both clubs! He deserves to remain there.

EDIT: Actually, I should correct myself. He wasn't pissed off, I mixed that up with someone else. But him and a lot of Benfica fans I spoke to weren't exactly excited and he was asking for Reyes to be bought rather than him which I don't know if would've been a good decision and were writing Javi off before he even gets a chance saying he's another Balboa just because he's a RM youth player and coming from there.

Of course this is VERY early on. For all we know, Javi Garcia could actually turn out to be a flop.

I personally am more interested in how Matias Fernadez develops at Sporting anyway. I hope he fulfills his potential there but of course you guys in this thread won't want that. :P

Well..of course it's too soon to tell. So far he has been amazing because he does what he's asked perfectly. He just needs to recover the ball and pass it simply to Di Maria, Aimar, Saviola or Ramires..they do the rest. His physical attributes are quite rated on our league since there's not many players like him. So...I hope he keeps this way, but as you said..it's too early to see..(even tho Del Bosque already said that he's impressed with his performances so far and he'll come to Lisbon to watch him live).
Some people were criticizing his signing because 7M € is a lot of money...and he hadn't played much for RM. Maybe it was Balboa's deal last season that made people doubt the transfer.

Manchester City's offer was the best for Benfica..it was impossible to reject it, but thankfully Luisão didn't accepted it. Fiorentina offer was the best for the brazilian (300'000€/month, about twice he's receiving at Benfica, but he refused it too). He's a very professional guy, he's respected here, he plays for the national squad so...

Matias Fernandez hasn't made the best start, but it's too early to tell too..besides, Sporting had a weak start so it would be hard for him to impress right away.
I'm all about good players signing for portuguese teams...it makes the league better and more enjoyable to watch.. I think Benfica has enough quality on its squad to face any portuguese team. Specially some most of people might not even have heard about them, like David Luiz (which is class), Sidnei, Fabio Coentrão, Miguel Vitor...

I just hope we can get some of our players to develop and make some profit for once. We already have a squad full of quality for the future (David Luiz, which i think won't be with us for next season; Coentrão, same as Luiz; Sidnei, needs to be more concentrated and understand when to pass the ball and to actually press; Di Maria, about time...; and Miguel Victor, give him 2 years). All players that sure will give us over 10 million each in about a year or two.

Of course i don't want this to happen, but the current state of the country is affecting clubs so we need to sell our best players in order to keep our finances stabilized.

Im confident that this season will be a 180 turn for us.
