Arsenal Thread

I think expectations are justified, given the financial situation the club is in. With the money Arsenal can spend, bigger things have to happen now. It's not comparable to the years before Wenger, when the club was in a different situation.

agreed +

If, a player can`t fill his expectations they `re sold. So, what`s Arsenal`s true expectation ? 4th spot + knockout rounds

Yesterday just papers over cracks - we always have that result in us.

Drove me mad at the Souless Bowl yesterday. Cost me £110 in return train and tube costs, ticket was 50 quid and you could hear a pin drop.

I miss Highbury, I miss the old Arsenal.

Happy with the win but it only buys Whinger more time. We need to look long term for the health of this club.

The point is that you delend with 11 players.

I just finished Amy Lawrence book about the Invincibles (invincible).
At the end of the book she interviews Nick Hornby. HE basically says that the Invincibles have risen the fans' expectations in an unrealistic way.

The beginning of the Wenger years were exceptional and are a wrong benchmark.

You might be right gerd, I think gooners expect too much from wenger, his 3 Prem titles and 1 champs league runners up are decent reading on a CV, but maybe less so over the time he has had and the resources at his disposal.

chelsea have already surpassed arsenals european record and look like bagging a 4th Prem title this year, even if city win it, that will equal arsenals prem title wins.

playing in the Chammps League and winning the odd cup every few years is way more than the majority of supporters would ever see, see spurs.

Our fans must have been really pissed off seeing debuchy at centre back and us winning 4-1, the poor fans! ;))

Really Rentboy you sound like a broken record, if we lose then you bring out everything you can, if we win then you tell everybody not to fool themselves

We all know what you think of the defensive situation we all feel he same, harping on about it every week isn't going to change anything about it.

Did we sell the game out on the first day? Or did it only fully get sold out a week before the game? Can you send me a screen shot please? Im worried about it and want to see if it is an ongoing problem :PP

Im happy we beat one of the most inform teams in the league and convincingly so. Yes it was at home, yes we have a makeshift defence because of Wenger being a dick in the summer, but a 4-1 win is a 4-1 win well done to the lads and Wenger.

Ah yes, I'll send you the seating plan with status updates for the upcoming 5 matches at the Emirates, cause I've got plenty of spare time!

Bobby, I totally get you and appreciate fans like you. But the problem is that you use humour as a defence mechanism. Like, when we beat Newcastle 4-1, which don't get me wrong, it's a great result, but you get the illusion that suddenly we're gliding over the shit we've been in this season, and then the next time we get battered 6-1 by either Chelsea or City you will find a way to laugh it off or make some jokes about us getting a trophy for sure this season.

I'd like to lighten up a bit and be more positive, but seeing cock ups being repeated every year really annoys me and my patience has ran out for far too long to be making jokes. You're right about this though: ranting here doesn't change a thing, I know it.

The moment we stop getting mauled by the title favourites and start at least to put up a decent fight against them (as many teams more modest than Arsenal have been doing, it has to be said) then I'll lighten up a little and hopefully enjoy our great performances a little bit more.

And what if we go another 10 years of not winning things? Like all of other football clubs.

Are you just going to be in a constant state of being pissed off?

Football and your team are there to be enjoyed, you need to take the happy moments and embrace them when you can.

Sometimes it is physically impossible to do so, my wife got pissed off at me when we lost to Stoke because I got so upset and moody, when we went 3-0 down I threw my phone at the chair and started swearing etc

My little boy was on the floor laughing and playing and my wife reminded me of what I was missing.

So I will still get pissed off when we play badly etc but i have got to enjoy the good times and games.

My boy will be an Arsenal supporter (i am brainwashing him now :PP) just like his granddad and great uncles, uncle are, but if I keep being in a constant state of shittiness if we are in a bad rut, then he will associate footy with negativity which will not be good.

So for the future Arsenal supporters.....stop being a whinging git ;))

Great post. Couldn't agree more.
Supporting a club is also about not winning.
The bad times make the good times even sweeter.

Good points, Bobby. But there is a difference between personal enjoyment and objective criticism.

There is a difference between just being sour because Arsenal aren't dominating everything and genuinely recognizing the team's problems and shortcomings. Because I (or I'm sure same for Rentboy and all other fans) recognize these problems doesn't mean we're depressed and don't get any enjoyment. I still enjoy following the league and watching great players and great football. When it comes to Arsenal, I hope they win and I still have loads of respect for Wenger. But reality is reality.

The problems Arsenal has are far too amateurish and have been going on for far too long just to be excused or dismissed in anyway. Yeah, complaining about the defense situation isn't going to fix it, but it doesn't mean we should just hush up and give Wenger a free pass in the face of his mistakes. How many seasons have we had where we were crippled by injuries, lack of depth in the squad, lack of plan b, etc? These aren't weird random occurrences out of bad luck. They are simple amateurish mistakes that have been going on for half a decade. There is no sign that Wenger even acknowledges them and has any plans to fix them. The defense situation is the most clear example of this. EVERYONE knew the defense was short going into the season. If Wenger personally wanted to take that risk and put the whole season in jeopardy, then he should be ready for the criticism and consequences. If a student doesn't study for a test, then it's not the teacher's fault for failing him.

It's like a forward who has a lot of great skills, but he has poor finishing. He works hard, etc, etc, but always squanders chances in critical positions consistently for many seasons. After a point, you admit that his finishing just isn't going to ever magically improve and you start looking for a A-class replacement. You don't keep having empty hopes that he will just randomly become the next Nistelrooy if you keep giving him chances.

Of course you can criticise, but going over it every game is just annoying.

I also think things are exagerated for effect, which I have explained a million times.

I also think people completely forget the good things he has done recently.

The depth of defence this season is bad (this isn't an ongoing problem). Our actual first choice back 4 imo is one of the best in the league.

We have amassed a great core of young british talent.

He is now trying to bring in World class players now he has the money to spend.

No matter what others think, I believe we have one of the beat keepers in the league;l, he is young and loves Arsenal.

I think our first 11 has a great balance of young and old that we havent seen for a long time.

For me the areas that haven been addressed properly for a while now are he defensive Midfielder and the mental feagility of the team when playing bigger teams.

I am really pissed off with those two things and also the Defensive problems we have today.

But for me the good stuff really outweighs the bad imo

And to say he is ignoring all of the problems we have is exagerating also, because he is addressing a lot of problems with the team also.

Your boy was laughing at how crap arsenal was lol. Bet he was saying to u. Put me on. I can do better than these lot!

Henry officialy retired, he will become a tv pundit.

how he never won golden ball is beyond me... best player in PL history imo.

I witness his brilliance live @Highbury and @Red Bull Arena :WORSHIP: A true ArsenalLegend!
SkySports has another gooner :))

i witnessed his great comeback to arsenal on the league cup goal he scored against Leeds. the whole damm place exploded. never seen that happened before

Don't want to piss on his parade as im admirer (I wasn't 10 years ago though lol) but he really wasn't the best the Premier League's seen thats obviously Ronaldo, phenomenal player though.

Ronaldo doesn't even come close. Maybe if he had stayed at United longer he would've.

People still think Gooners are that bothered by van Persie?

He was a better player by 2008 to the day he left he was the best player in the world, something Henry never was nor could lead Arsenal to a European Cup.

not taking anything away from him.

Ronaldo wasn't even the best United player of the EPL era, that was Cantona.
I prefer Henry to Ronaldo, but Ronaldo won more silverware with his clubs, not with his country of course.

Personally i think Bergkamp was even better than Henry.

I agree !

I always will love Titi though and never will forget the invincible season. I think most Ronaldo fans are from a different era and can`t see past his today`s attributes.

Bergkamp will always be the best for me, but I love Henry.I feel very privileged to have seen him play and it is beautiful to see his love and passion for the club today.

He has had a great career, I can live with him being one of the greatest players the Prem has ever seen ;-)

Thanks for all the memories Thierry. He is certainly in contention for best player in the EPL history.

Between him and Bergkamp, I preferred Bergkamp for his pure magic and class, but the most effective of the two overall has to be Henry. His numbers for Arsenal are impressive!

I know there are many other contenders for this (Klinsmann, Cantona?) but for me, Henry and Bergkamp are the two players who truly put the Premier League on the map as a arguably the most magical league in the world.

There have been a few more skilful/technical players than him, eg. Bergkamp, Zola, Cantona, Silva, but Henry is the best PL era player overall imo. He is also the only opposition player who I have applauded scoring a goal against my team

Ronaldo had that 1 brilliant season (was he as good as last season's Suarez tho?), and it's hard not to superimpose his Real career into the debate, but I never feared Utd Ronaldo like I did Henry. Nor did I ever respect him as much as Henry ...tho that pen strained my respect somewhat
