Arsenal Thread

So Fabianski is off to Swansea then. He was the perfect back-up to Szczesny, but he deserves to be first choice. Reckon Vorm will go to Liverpool.

Also Morata seems to be getting close. Not quite sure if I really fancy this, as Real have a buy-back clause meaning we're only really developing their prospect.

To be honest I don't really mind Sagna leaving. He's been great for us but it is the right time to replace him with a younger right-back. Aurier would fit like a glove.

The writing was on the wall for Bac. Good luck, au revoir and all that, but let's move on quick. We need a RB, I don't think we can keep Jenkinson as first choice RB yet. He improved a lot, but he's not quite there yet.

Fab leaving was also expected. Will be interesting to see what Wenger does. He surely has to buy a keeper - what caliber of keeper will it be though?
Right now we have only Szczesny and Damian Martinez, with Viviano returning to Italy from his loan with Arsenal.

If we get a youngster or an unknown quantity keeper who's guaranteed to play second fiddle to Szcz, I'll be pissed.
Szcz, bless him, is a cheeky bastard as it is. If we don't bring anyone to provide proper competition for the #1 shirt and keep him in check, I fear for his development.

He's already 24, not exactly a youngster, but goal keepers are a different breed. Many keepers have their best years from 28 to 38 years old, and Szczesny is far from being the finished article.
If we look at Fabianski, his best form for Arsenal only came in the last 1 or 2 years. Now he's what, 28?

It's a shame he left, but now it's done. We need to sort the goal keeper pecking order, or else I fear for Szcz's performances.

I hope we try to sign Cardiff's David Marshall. Very impressive last season.

Looking likely Fabregas will be at Arsenal next season, you think signing him will effect your efforts to sign a CF?

We have to get another striker, so it can't.

It is the number one position we need.

If he doesnt get another striker in then he is mental :PP

It seems we do have priority on him via a clause inserted in his Barcelona contract. It's just a matter of whether Wenger will make use of it or not.

The way I see it, Fabregas is surplus to our requirements right now. We got Cazorla and Özil since he left, plus Ramsey emerged like a top notch midfielder. His transfer would claim £30m of our transfer kitty. We're packed with midfielders (although we did have the simultaneous absences of Ramsey, Wilshere and Özil at one point this season).

Squad depth never hurts, but I'm not sure we're about to shell out £30m for a player who won't be a guaranteed starter.

Would be interesting to see how he fares if he returns though. I think he has been below par all this time with Barcelona, and there's no doubt he was a much more influential player when he was at Arsenal. Could he go back to that form he showed between 2008-2011?

I don't know why but I can see us performing well with a false 9 like Fabregas up front. I hate this system but I think it could work for us.

I am not too sure tbh, I feel like the false 9 formation will be fundamentally doomed to fail in the premier league. The style of defending in England would mean the lack of an absolute fixed attacking outlet in the striker position would lead to a dire lack of goals.

Of course, I also believe that if any club in the league would be able to run it effectively it would be Arsenal so there is that I guess.

I want the false 9 crap to fail worldwide. The world needs more Batistutas, Romarios and Van Bastens.

That said, I wished we would buy Cesc back and find him a place. It's not easy, I know he's superfluous right now, given our cast of midfielders, but Cesc is too good a footballer to let go for 30m. In an age when Soldado cost 30m, bringing Cesc back for that fee, and at 27 years of age, is good business.

If that happens, we still would have an awful lot of business to do, mind you! 2 defenders (RB and CB), CF and maybe another DMF to rotate with Flamini.

I'm not even counting a GK here, because I've given up hopes... I guess Wenger considers Szcz his undisputed no.1 now.

Giroud is already playing somewhat like a false 9, or target man to be more correct. One of his primary roles is winning aerial balls, holding passes, and serving as a wall for one-two's. His play is so much focused on developing the team attack. Which is great, but we also need pure attacking prowess like Suarez or Higuain, etc.

We, now, need a RB and GK for sure due to the players we've let go.
Another DMF for Flamini rotation.
Possibly another CB since Sagna used to cover there as well.

and...

Top Class attackers. Preferably 2 of them.

This may sound pessimistic but I fully expect these signings only:

Random back-up goalkeeper
Aurier
Rémy

It wouldnt suprise me if those are the players we get in.

The chances of us getting 5 players in are very slim.

Isnt cescs assist record and scoring record good since he has played for. Barca.

I think i read he has the second highest assists in la liga last season and at barca since he has been there scored in a 1/3rd of all his games?

Anyway i would love to have him back and seeing him go to Chelsea would be horrible :((

But i completely understand why we wont go for him if we dont, we simply need to spend in other areas much much more.

The chances of us spending over 60mill in one transfer period are slim and to put half of that amount on a midfielder where we already have lots doesnt make sense........unless we can have him, a striker, right back defensive midfielder.

Cesc to chelsea

Cesc has been involved in 60 goals in the last 3 La Liga seasons, and this is some kind of record among midfielders.
And that may include Özil, if we compare the 2 years when he was at Madrid.

Özil leads in assists overall in the past seasons all across Europe, but Cesc has plenty of goals in him too.

A pitty Wenger won't be going for him, and it would suck if he moved to a Premier League rival, especially Chelsea.

The problem in bringing stars is the money involved in the transfer fee and the salaries, agreeing terms. And I'm pretty sure that the latter was a done deal as far as Fabregas is concerned. It seems he was keen on returning and the salary wouldn't be a problem - since he apparently took a pay cut to join Barcelona.

Well, I doubt we will have another Özil type of signing, but if Cesc does join a club like Chelsea, it will put more pressure on Wenger to spend on someone at least as good as him.

Let's hope Wenger has something up his sleeve. I wouldn't mind Pogba at all, for instance :D
Even if we have to shell out big time.

Keep your hands off! My mate takes his kid to gym on Sunday morning and the only other bloke there is Marshall. Says he's very happy and settled here. I know that means nothing as if he's offered a lot more money he will be gone and I wouldn't blame him one bit. He's too good not to be a starter though so unless he's going to be first choice it would be a stupid move for him.

This is why we love Thierry Henry

We might regret this. Now the pressure is on Wenger to sign players of the same calibre at least. And good luck trying to do that with 30m!

As long as we actually use the 30 mil in positions we need reinforcing in, such as CF, DMF, RB, etc, then I don't care about Cesc going to Chelsea or any other club.

I think he is a very good player, but I think there lacks much evidence to show that he is the type of world-class player like Messi, Iniesta, Ronaldo, Suarez (or even Ozil of '10,'11 in Germany & Madrid) to bring the team to the next level.

I don't mean to crap on his legacy, he was a leader in that era and was a huge part of the reason we kept making the CL knockout stages and remained in the top 4. But let's remember that we haven't been above 3rd place since 04-05 season including the years that we had Fabregas, Van Persie, and Nasri!. And we remained in the Top 4 for the years he left. In addition, he has good statistics at Barcelona, but his stay there has not been far from influential as he struggled to get a cemented place in the squad and failed to win over the fan's support.

Again, he would have been a good addition regardless. But, is he what we need to challenge for the title? I don't believe so. I believe we need a
CF and we are linked to Jackson Martinez, Balotelli, and Mandzukic. If we get any of those, that would really be fantastic. In addition, we need the replacement for Sagna, and an alternative/improvement to Flamini. These are the musts. Then secondary additions would be another CB, LB, and then finally, another physical attacker or Cesc for the midfield/offensive line.
