Arsenal Thread

I think the problem is how stagnant Arsenal have become and that's probably the most frustrating thing about being an Arsenal fan. They're not going backwards as a club but they're not making much progress either, which calls into question Wenger's policy of relying almost solely on young players, the point of which is that the team as a whole is supposed to improve in correlation with the development of these young players.

Some Arsenal fans have forgotten that Wenger and the board took the decision to bild a new stadium. By taking that decision they have been thinking long term and not short term. Short term would have been staying at Highbury and buying more expensive players...in the long term that would not be a good strategy.

If Arsenal finish fourth, that would be logic, since at least 5 clubs have spend more on players: Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City and Spurs...Arsenal are clearly punching above their weight since being at the Emirates...but the expectations of the fans were higher.

I must say that i understand the fans' deception: each year it seems Arsenal will be contenders and then they throw it all away stupidly, not because a lack of talent, but because a lack of winners mentality...in the upcoming transfer window Wenger should change that...he must buy good players with a winners mentality who are not injury prone...

well so far gerd 6 years of sweet fuck all is not good. do you honestly think arsenal will become the new manchester united any time soon i.e win like 10 titles in the space of 15 years?

Good post Gerd, The stadium was always going to be an issue vs success . Hence why Dean knew lack of silverware would be the down side. Dean didnt want to sacrifice that at the time, but boy! was he wrong having the 2nd biggest stadium in the league. Especially when revenues plays a big part in the near future . IMO Wembley would never of been an option

If Mutd had 8 title vs 18 Lpool ,How realistic is 13 titles vs 18! The hardest part in getting a stadium is real-estate .As OT added tiers I`m sure the Emirates could do the same :BOP:

I know 1 trophy at a time!

been consistently in the champions league without barely even spending,i'd think when everyone else has to watch what they spend, yes.just need a decent goalkeeper,a center back and a defensive midfielder(a hard fucker).would love to have had wengers philosophy at our club years ago.i'll bet its gonna pay dividends in one or two years.stick with wenger or you'll end up with another rioch...or worse graham

The question is if being succesfull does automatically has to mean winning silverware like Man Utd.
I think most fans would be over the moon if their club would win 3 out of the remaning titles in those 15 years you mention (it's only an example).

It seems as if nowadays every fan wants his club to be the best in the world. Imagine being a fan of a Belgian team?

Why always compare Arsenal to the likes of Man Utd and Barcelona?
Their are thousands of teams (with millions of fans) who dream of being as successfull as Arsenal...

And concerning long term security i would rather be an Arsenal fan than a Man Utd fan. With the Glazer "construction" the future is financially rather shaky for Man Utd.

I just read on the Guardian website that the accumulated loss of the Premiership has never been as high as now (and i don't remember what "now" is) and that at a time when the revenues are higher than ever...English football is more and more a bubble and i have the distinct impression that Arsenal are one of the safest clubs in financial terms.

I think arsenal are in a good position, okay the trophy thing is becoming abit of an albatross round ya necks but everything else at the club is in place and regular champs league (1/4 & 1/2 finals) isnt to be sniffed at.

one of most successful and best run clubs in england.

Thing is Wenger keeps gambling on his current crop of players. Almunia for 6 years REALLY! I think most fans are frustrated by Wenger saying " I`ll buy if the player is there" I think he means we need to pay towards the debt as much as possible before dipping into the transfer kitty. Don`t forget what Wenger said WE`LL WIN the ... I`m at the saving grace point w/ Wenger I trust him to lead a little less . If , he was honest w/ transfer policy I would be 100% behind him is where I`m getting at. I`m at 85% :COAT: By August 75% Chimbo 60% ...July Jonney % :SMUG:

haha love it

Looks like you are about to sign Ricky Alvarez a tall elegant attacking midfielder from Velez Sarsfield.

He is predominantly left footed , holds the ball up well and is hard to knock off the ball. He has a nice burst of acceleration and an eye for goal as well as a pass and some neat tricks ie flair.

He did suffer a nasty knee injury that hindered his early career but at 23 he is blossoming and has been called into the domestic based squad.

Can he play at CB? DM? if not then pointless signing. We need defensive minded players for fucksakes

Well he is obviously going to replace someone in midfield possibly Arshavin and at 6'2" he is no midget either.

Song and Denilson need to be moved on as well. You could have signed Mascherano at one stage but Wenger decided not to follow through his interest.

Yeah, I thing Wenger is looking to bring some more S. Americans now and leave out the Africans. We have Samuel Galindo 6`3" n Wellington 5`6.5" . Vela should stay or go out on loan again. I don`t mind going the S. American route only danger is they would want Italy or Spain after making a name of themselves here.

This Alvarez bloke plays very similar to Pastore on fluency movement-wise a lil gifted he seems to have a good burst in a jam situation I`ve never see him or heard of him before. Never would of thought Wenger would notice him in the Primera Division . We need height for set pieces nothing worst than seeing cesc, nasri and arshavin taking the post ,because backing the back of their head into an attacking player waistline is embarrassing.

I know Wenger will spend big on defensive players and these S. American bring down the wage bill . We need squad players that can make the difference when it counts.

Arsenal like every other European club have their own scouts in South America who they rely on. When it is of a particular interest the manager is following through on they send their own man to run the rule over the player.

Alvarez should be no surprise considering his performances over the last season and in the Libertadores.

As much I understand he will only join us on february! If i don't mistake!!
I think a very good replacement for Arshavin!

Ooh nice draw to end the season with...;))

Can't wait for the summer, although we will probably wait until the last moment to get anybody

Or nobody and Wenger will believe that the team has matured over the Summer and he feels they have the belief and mentality to win the league. :))

Well Denilson will be going at least :DD apparently he is a winner and needs to move away from the club

There is too much speculation going around about who we are going to buy and bring in. I think that and the way Wenger has acted during the end of the season will mean changes.

If Barca stump up the cash then I think Fab will be off and Nasrri doesn't look like signing a new deal so he will be off aswell. So we will have to get in a couple of players at least :))

Big changes ahead me thinks! hopefully for the better.

If we do have that many changes though, the likely hood of them gelling for the new season might not happen?

So if we do make changes, bring in good players and play well next season and banish the frailties of this season (and the last 5) but still do not win things, would people still want Wenger to leave? or are people's views basically on just winning things as a barometer of Arsenal doing well?

It will be interesting to see.

If Wenger really doesn't look to improve the squad in the summer and the same old frailties stop us progressing, then his time will be up as I have said before. But I really do think things will change :DD

just hope you get some experienced players, not some 17 year old to first team..

just "finished" top players, not "in the making" who won´t consider Arsenal as team to grow and then go to better club..

@Bobby
I dont think Nasri will leave!
Fab maybee if big offer arives!!But not Nasri!!
If these two leave i would be crushed !!

I was just about to say! Fabregas is likely but if Nasri leaves then your in a pretty bad situation. Were would Nasri likely go? Italy?

Yeah its not great if they both leave (understatement :DD). But if they dont want to be here then they should go.

Hopefully Nasri is just waiting to see what we do in the transfer market before he signs a new deal? but at the moment it isn't looking good and Arsenal won't want to lose him for nothing next season.

If they both go then we will have alot of money to spend on quality replacements, but obviously we never know how those players will play for us and how long it will take for them to settle.

Going to be tricky.

Myth. You need to tell Wenger how to properly train your Defensive line. The errors that you make are childish but clearly reveal that your not working your defensive tactics well enough.
That why i keep saying that your a narrower Barcelona that completely lacks pressure and defensive notion. You could have Pique + Nesta + Maicon + Ashley Cole f.e. in your line but if they are not coordinated and guided well, its worth nothing. Wenger season after seasons displays the same mistakes, over and over again. Its not a question of having experienced defenders or not, its a matter of having people understanding their role and what they should do in certain situations.

dont think wenger could do much there other than get a few decent defenders other than what he has.arsenals defending hasnt really been the main issue over the years.matter of fact they are sound there.lets not forget they lost gallas(whos been outstanding for spurs),vermaelen.starting cb gone and a dodgy goalkeeper to boot.whilst i think koscielny is pretty decent albeit rash,he isnt helped by whoever he is playing with.an a dodgy goalkeeper.with vermaelen back next season, could see the arse tightening up the back(no pun intended)with maybe another cb.but in all,yes thru the spine is where the problem lies.my two cents......

I also think Arsenal's defensive problem is not a problem of defenders. You need a winner in midfield.
I think i've already mentioned him (but maybe not in this thread): Jan Vertonghen.
I know young Belgian football players are often overhyped, but this one for me is our biggest prospect.
He currently is Ajax' captain and was voted by his colleagues as the most influential and decisive Ajax player in their championship winning season. Vertonghen can play CB, LB, DMF, CM and LMF. And on top of that he is used to play together with Vermaelen and is a very good friend of Vermaelen...go for him Arsène.
