Arsenal Thread

I was reading a couple of websites' versions of the just ended game and I came upon that of Juventus.com. Its funny how their take on the entire match differs from that I read on all the other sites. Note, I didnt watch the game on television but from what i gathered Juventus were upstaged entirely. The Guardian Unlimited described it as the most comprehensive 2-0 thrashing ever. I have posted Juventus.com's assessment here for your reading pleasure:

A wet night in London was warmed –up by the atmosphere at Highbury, where both sets of fans made their voices heard as Juventus and Arsenal took to the field for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. Despite the importance of the occasion the Juve players did not seem overawed and quickly relaxed into a familiar rhythm, breaking-up the opposition attacks and causing problems with their possession of the ball and slick passing. Both Zebina and Emerson caused problems for the Arsenal backline with a series of tempting crosses, and Ibra went close with a free-kick that was deflected just wide.

However, it was an ex-bianconero that made the difference in the first half. Finding Fabregas in space, Thierry Henry fed the young Spaniard who slotted the ball to the right of Buffon from just inside the area.

After the interval, the bianconeri seemed to add a new determination to their play as they went in search of an equaliser. Within the first five minutes Ibrahimovic had used his power and strength to cause confusion in the Arsenal box but was unable to convert the chances created. Ten minutes later it was the turn of the opposition to attack. Buffon however reacted brilliantly to deny both Henry and Fabregas with a pair of phenomenal saves that employed all the reflexes and intelligence that have made him the best in the world. Indeed, several minutes later he was on hand again, denying both Hleb and Pires in quick succession.

Twenty-five minutes into the second half Fabregas was again involved, providing an incisive pass to Henry from the right-hand side who converted for Arsenal’s second goal. Juventus then pushed forward searching for a goal and went very close when Camoranesi’s chipped shot skimmed the outside of the post.

As the game drew to a close the determination of Camoranesi and Zebina led to both being cautioned for the second time, and as such both were sent off. Despite being two goals down, Juve will still feel that they have a good chance to progress; after all, the second leg is at the Delle Alpi…

Well done arsenal:applause: you outplayed the old lady!!!
viera who:lol: ? FABREGAS is the man i love this player!!!!

Idon't see why we can't get both. Bolton have you lot and I can see you getting a result at the Reebok. Spurs are at St James Park and after thier performance last night we can quite easily make good ground this weekend.

Anywho that's for worrying about another night.

We just bitchslapped Juve!!!!

What a game!

Cesc Fabregas is an amazing midfielder: he's very talented, fast, strong, calm and has a great vision and knowledge. He totally overwhelmed Vieira and their mates tonight! Plus, Henry and Reyes make a great pair together, it's a shame that Titi will probably be playing for Barça next season.

Man of the Match: Cesc Fabregas. Kolo Toure was great though, Ibrahimovic will certainly dream of him tonight. I however did not enjoy Hleb very much: he's most of the time too nervous to figure the best option, he needs to calm down his game. Senderos was great too, especially on high balls. I think Arsenal did a great match.

Juve totally disappointed me: Zlatan tried a couple of times, Camoranesi was too excited and violent (hence the red card), Zebina I think does not belong in such an important team, Vieira was missing in action, as were Mutu and Trezeguet. Zambrotta was a complete disaster, Reyes outplayed him the whole night. Such a sad game for Juve. Only Buffon and Cannavaro did a decent job.

Juve won't have Nedved, Camoranesi, Vieira and Zebina in Delle Alpi. I wonder what is Capello doing to manage a 3-0 win against Arsenal without midfielders... Given that I call Arsenal are through, and that they might as well be able to beat either Inter or Villareal, we can have a Barca/Lyon/Milan vs. Arsenal final. ;) Great game!

Just one question... why does everyone repeat that this has been a good last European night for Highbury? Is Arsenal moving so soon to the Fly Emirates Stadium?

Arsenal- Juventus tomorrow. Sadly, Nedved( suspended)and Del Piero ( injured) are out. So you'll have to face an off-form Ibrahimovic upfront.

You'll likely face the following formation:

Buffon
Zambrotta Thuram Cannavaro Chiellini
Camoranesi Emerson Vieira Mutu
Ibrahimovic Trezeguet

Zebina might play on the right, with Zambrotta taking Chiellini's spot on the left.

Prediction: Juve will let Arsenal attack 90 minutes long, but it will be in vain, as Arsenal is a counter-attacking team(in Europe anyway). Juventus will score a late goal on the break to win the game 0-1.
0-1 Mutu.

Just a bit of advice, never make bold predictions. They have a tendency to bite you on the Arse!!

!

You're right about the rest, but not on this. Reyes and Zambrotta didn't even meet in the match, Zambrotta was the leftback for juve and Reyes the left winger for Arsenal. Meaning they were on opposite flanks. Zambrotta was one of the few who did well, stopping Hleb and adding something in attack. Sadly Mutu was hopeless in combining with Zambrotta.

Cannavaro hit the nail on the head, the team should've been more cynical. In the first half Juve actually tried to go forward, but were ineffective due to being clueless in attack. Had juve, like I predicted, been more defensive, Arsenal would've had a much tougher time.

Anyway, juve's problems are deeper seeded. The managment and the transfer campaigns are all orchestrated for Serie A, in italy juve's 'bark, but no bite' attitude scares away the serie A teams. In europe though, it's sadly a different story.

Ouch, my head is sore but I'm still similing :)

I was shocked by Juve's lackadaisical attitude. They didn't really seem to care that much after the first 15 minutes. Vieria's performance was oh so familiar. This is what non Arsenal fans have never got to grips with this season; selling Vieria was NOT a mistake, not replacing him was a mistake.

But was it? Arsenal play a different game now Paddy's gone. It's taken a while to click but Ab Fab is the new maestro, and with any luck he will be for years to come.

I couldn't believe how knackered they were at the end. Cannavaro and Vieria in particular looked like they were about to collapse. Zambrotta was awesome though, what a player. The rest of the Juve side could learn a lot from him.

Oh and Camoranesi, what a prick. I hope Capello gave him a serious slapping in the dressing room.

EDIT: Just read this. Buffon, on the return leg, before getting on the team bus home:

"We'll have to play the perfect match, but if Arsenal play like they did tonight, even that won't be enough."

:mryellow:

Luvley Jubley...Fantastic performance! got a bit of a hangover at work today...need a sleep.

It all makes it better that Vieira left to get the champions league and now it looks likely that we will knock Juve out! its just so sweet!

Don't want to count my chickens just yet, but with the players they will have out for the next leg it looks promising!

Lets hope we can keep this form through the rest of the season in the premiership aswell.

Are you still of this opinion???
Uhhh....yeah. Why wouldnt I be? Until I see some good Arsenal performances from the current side without Henry, I'm not gonna be convinced. If you take Chelsea or Man Utd, or even Liverpool, you could probably take any one player out of that team and it will still be as good or atleast close to its best.
Maybe in the future Arsenal would be able to say that too but at the moment, some of their key players are very young and others are on the verge of leaving. So Arsenal still seem to rely on certain players.

Arsenal were a joy to watch last night - you made Juventus look like little boys. :applause:

Fabregas is going to be a BIG name in world football.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Yeah definitely true. Liverpool would be sick without Gerrard, Rooney is replaceable at Man Utd and Lampard is superfluous at Chelski.

Rubbish. Any team is not as good without its best player OBVIOUSLY, but if you think that Van Persie, Fabregas, Hleb et al don't pose a threat then you're blind with bias frankly.

Man Utd have put on many great performances without Rooney, Liverpool are now also starting to show they dont rely on Gerrard and as for Chelsea, Lampard seems to play every game anyway but when he doesnt, Chelsea are still as good.

Debatable indeed.

But this is off the point. You said Henry is Arsenal's only dangerous player. That just isn't true.

I never said that. They have other dangerous players as well, but none as important as Henry. And my point is that you need most of their top players out there to do well where as other teams dont. For example, if theres no Henry, the forwards lack something; If theres no Fabregas, the midfield lacks something, etc
Where as the other teams are starting to follow what Chelsea are doing, where they have a team of many key players so that if one is missing, its not such a big loss.
Look at our team right now. Up front we have 3 strikers who are consistantly scoring. For wingers we have about 4 good players who are about equally as good as each other. The same can be said about Chelsea's players too. And at Liverpool, they might not have as much depth in their squad as us but their players are all equally taking responsibility so that the loss of one player isnt as big as it is at a club like Arsenal.

Every team has their talisman - ours is Rooney, Arsenal's is Henry and Chelsea's is Lampard and Gerrard at L'pool. BUT:

Without Rooney we can still turn out performances against the best of teams. Chelsea will do so withough Lampard. A year ago L'pool couldn't even score without Gerrard let alone win but have turned the tables. But all 3 teams have a plan B. Arsenal without Henry? Not the same team, they don't even look top 6 team in my opinion. He adds that extra dimension that Arsenal need - because the way they play their game. Wenger has never had a Plan B, so when Arsenal go 1-0 down without Henry, Plan A is all they have and without the Frenchman it doesn't happen - WITH him on the pitch you see the way he drops back and fills in passes or runs at the defence, or simply shoots. No other player at Arsenal does this.

Oh dear, more generalisation without any actual facts. Gerrard has played virtually every game this season so how do you work that out?
