Arsenal Thread

Henry was immense today i must admit and to be honest we get a fair amount of whack over being a one man team because of gerrard, but i have to say, i think Arsenal without Henry and the Mancs without Rooney would be distincly average, because those guys are world class and make them tick no question.

Ahh but you had Viera then...he made you tick too.

This kind of talk is ridiculous. In which team would Thierry not stand out in? Or Rooney? Or Gerrard? No team would be the same without there star player, and Henry makes a particular difference because of how good he is. Barcalona wouldn't miss Ronnie?

I totally agree. Arsenal were superb against the scum yesterday.

Isnt that what i just said?

Take Henry out, Rooney out and Gerrard out and you have average sides. I think only Chelsea can boast better.

Barca i dont agree with, they have lots of top, top quality.

Fran Merida:

Arsenal are ready to capitalise on another Barcelona contract blunder and beat Real Madrid to the signing of 15-year-old wonder kid Fran Merida.
The Spanish champions fell out spectacularly with Arsenal over Arsène Wenger's signing of Cesc Fabregas two years ago and are on collision course again as the Gunners boss exploits Barca's inability to make their youngsters feel wanted.

Merida's impending arrival bears further testimony to Arsenal's phenomenal scouting network. He was discovered by Francis Cagiao, the man responsible for recommending Fabregas and Jose Antonio Reyes.

A midfield playmaker in the Ronaldinho mould, Merida has been with Barcelona since he was 11.

Two years ago his parents signed an affiliating contract on his behalf but sources in Spain have indicated the contract could be null and void as, in a potentially disastrous oversight, it was not signed by a club executive, meaning he could walk away for free.

When Wenger signed Fabregas in September 2003 he exploited the loophole in the Spanish system that says a player cannot sign professional forms until he turns 18. Barcelona eventually received £1million in compensation for grooming the player.

Manchester United moved in identical fashion for teenage defender Gerard Pique, with Barcelona again receiving a nominal fee of around £250,000.

Merida has grown disillusioned with the lack of interest the Spanish giants have shown in his future career and he has stayed away from training since August 11 citing "personal reasons".

Real Madrid were eager to sign him, despite a slur campaign which claimed they had gone off him "because he was a bad student", but Arsenal were quickly alerted by comprehensive reports from Cagiao and their hand was strengthened further by the fact Merida shares the same agent as Fabregas.

The Spain youth international is aware that a move to Madrid is unrealistic due to the strong rivalry between the clubs. He knows he could be forgiven by Barca supporters if he left for England but not if he chose the Bernabeu.

Instead, he spoke with Fabregas and Pique and, after hearing glowing reports on life in England and how he would be given the opportunity to make the first team, he is now determined to complete a move to the Premiership.

This article is from October 2005. However, the Merida story has resurfaced in the last day or so as Fran is now fast approaching his 16th birthday, when he will be in a position to sign a youth contract with the Arse. To stir things up a notch, the internal match played against Brighton reserves on Tuesday to give RVP and Sol some match fitness featured 'A Trialist' on the Arsenal team sheet:

Was this Merida? He has apparently already trained with the team since falling out with Barca. Has Wenger done it again? Most Arsenal fans are pretty sick to death of hearing Barce harp on about capturing Henry, but how fuming must Barca fans be by the Gooners nicking their future stars :mryellow:

But what's he actually like? Take a look:

I can see it now, Arsenal 2012 front line of Lupoli and Van Persie the veteran, supported by Merida in the hole, Walcott on the right flank, Fabregas with a roaming central role, Zidane style and Diaby as the rock DMF :D

One day...

Yeah, i saw on sky sports the other night when some guy won the chance to be the first fan to sit in the stadium. Apparently, all the seats are cushioned and thats a first for a UK stadium!

just something trivial...will the bergkamp testimonal 'christen' the emirates stadium? If so...I WANT TICKETS!!

i heard there are two matches being played in the stadium before the new season, bergie's testimonal being one of them.

Such a shame, these things are happening with satdia. Losing a lot of tradition. I know things move on but its a shame we wont see highbury again, its what makes clubs synonimous. I'm dreading if we have to leave Anfield...

Well the game against Charlton seems to be going great. 3-0 up right after half time, Arsenal having about 65% possession. Nothing sweeter than an Arsenal that puts its chances away, huh?
