What about Alan Smith from Leeds? Surely he would be ideal, although I don't think we can afford 8million.

I'm not convinced about Smith as a top notch goal poacher, he seems more of a link man and hence the fact he has been playing in the leeds midfield for a season or more. i think defoe would be ideal, there are also rumours that a number of clubs have put bids in for Louis Saha, altho Fulham have said they are not selling.

Well I think Alan Smith would be great for Arsenal, especially as we would play him in his prefered position. :D

Yeh its on Sky Sports News just there, Fulham say Saha is going no-where, yeah right, as if they could afford to turn down an offer of around 8-10 Million for him. Personally I dont think he is a great striker. Id go for Kluivert for Arsenal as I said before on this topic and Larsson for Man Utd.

As I said a couple of weeks back, the rumours are Pennant and £3million for Smith

Well that would be a great deal, although I like Pennant. ;)

Hhhmmm maybe, they brought back bridges last nite so maybe they are thinking take the money but they wont sell Viduka and Smith, and with Fergie going to watch Viduka last nite it look slike its him who's gonna leave not to mention Smith being a supporters fave and being leeds fc thru and thru.

Don't think Wenger rates him though, he could also go off the rails too if you know what I mean.

So do I, he's a big talent for England and we're gonna dump him for a peroxide psychopath from Leeds.

Yeah, i've always thought Pennants a bit of a party animal. ;)

Nah, I don't think it would be a great deal because:

i) I still think that Pennant could do a very good job at Arsenal if given the chance, which actually is highly unlikely because of Wengers tendency to dump the english lads and go for the Frenchies.
ii) I don't think Alan Smith is a goalscorer which is what Arsenal should want to take the burden off Henry. Also doesnt Smith have a little itty bitty reputation problem, The last thing Arsenal need is another player with discipline problems.

Guti

hehe just read my message, I said he doesnt have an itty bitty reputation problem, which although is a Typo its true, he doesnt have a little problme, ITS HUGE!

Arsenal don't need a yob from Leeds, But I did hear Newcastle were interested in completing the 3 Muskateers...

Both teams are yesterdays news... Chelsea look like a decent bet for the double this year (League and CL), if they dont then they'll come very close at any rate. Also dont forget they'll probably buy more players this summer, ive heard theyre after Totti, Nedved and Fernando Torres if they get any of them its difficult to see them not winning everything in sight.

Man Utd and Arsenal cant compete financially, Man Utd have the money but because theyre a plc they cant spend it, at the moment theyre not too bad, but with Rio heading for suspension what happens if Brown or O'Shea for example pick up an injury. Their form dipped a bit when Scholes was out, and it could do the same if Van Nist got injured... its hard to see them shelling out loads on a quality replacement. They could do worse than trying to buy Adriano in the Parma January sale, but I dont think hes the sort of player AF would go for.

Arsenal dont have the ability to spend money because theyre saving for a new stadium which will cost an absolute packet. Their main problem is the defence, Lehmann's an ok goalie but he doesnt have enough protection in most matches. They really could do with one more decent experienced defender, someone like Southgate perhaps - it was a mistake to let Upson go. Up front theyre ok, but the big question is what happens if Henry gets injured. Wiltord doesnt want to be there, Bergkamp only goes to half the games and Ali Alialidiare seems ok but is untested. Perhaps they should have picked up Elber off Bayern.

Chelsea are the only team who can afford an injury in every position (with the possible exception of GK) and still put out a team that is as strong. At the moment Duff injured but its not really a problem coz theyve got Joe Cole, Geremi etc who are almost as good. Similarly if there is an injury to Mutu or Crespo they can play Hasselbank or Gudjohnson, if things get really dire they can bring back Forsell.

Yeah I thought with us not buying anyone that we would really struggle this season, but the lads have proved me wrong. I know Man Utd are top, but they did spend about 20mill and we've spend nothing. I know this may sound strange, but us being second could be a good thing.

We have turned every player we signed to gold.. just think about it :

Henry - a decent left winger turned into a dominant striker and basically the best player in the world

Toure - unknown Ivory Coast international who has been a rock in defence this season

Vieira - another example of pretty much unknown lad to World Cup winner and Arsenal captain.

Ljungberg - he has been greatly improved while playing for us.

Pires - same thing

The list goes on and on...

Erm "even better" than last year... how do u figure that out ? Youve lost Beckham, your biggest provider of goals, and Veron (his usual replacement) and replaced them with sub standard players. Your defence is worse now Ferdinand can only play 2-3 more games and then he'll be out for the rest of the season, Keane and Scholes are struglling with injuries - the only position where your stronger than last year is in goal. If you dont sign players this Jan it will cost you - either in the CL or the league.

Not to be a supporter of United or anything here, but Beckham's contribution goal-wise last year was not nearly as good as previous years. Considering FKs are Beckham's most famed attribute, in the league, Man Utd. only scored one last year, and it wasn't from Beckham. His assist count was fairly high (9) bit Giggs' (13) was better (Henry was top with 23).
United aren't in the days of Cole and Yorke anymore where Beckham's crossing ability could be used to it's fullest extent, and it was clear he wasn't as effective to United's cause last season as he had been in past years so the sale was probably a good move albeit influenced by Ferguson's hatred (some would say jealousy) for Beckham's lifestyle under Victoria.
