Arsenal thread

I heard it was near £35mil.. but i may be confusing this with my FM2005 budget :):)

I hope he looks at Mascherano. Brilliant DMF. Absolute monster at River. There is also Essien and Mavuba in the reckoning.

You think he may move for Abbiati as GK? I've also heard Seba Frey's name pop up on more than one occassion, but he will prob go to Inter. What about Morgan de Sanctis? Carlo Cudicini? Who knows.

I just want to see a CB with authority in the middle. When Sol is absent, NO ONE takes command at the back. Givet or Squillaci coming in? Ledley King would be class, but who knows what would happen if we take Tottenhams Captain.... again ;)

"Who the Fuck are you? Mr 44 posts."

Whats posts gotta do with anything you immature twat.

Absolutely nothing, apart from the fact that the guy was complaining about how quiet our thread was!! The point I was trying to make was - perhaps if he had posted more then the thread wouldn't be so quiet. Its not rocket science. Maybe I came across a bit strong, sorry for that.

Anyway, back to more important stuff. If we can score first against Bayern then maybe we can overturn the deficit. However, I just feel that we will concede at least 1 so we will need 4 to go through. Its gonna take something extra special to do it. Can we do it?

Iceman - I would love to see Cudicini between the sticks, he is class. Not too old either, plus he's a free transfer.

against bayern arsenal should try to come over the wings clearly more frequently.

in the first leg too much was tried through the center and as a result many lost balls did arise. arsenals defence isn't strong enough to cope with bayern having more of the game. so it all depends on arsenals ability to keep in possetion and be patient, because imo they can't afford to conceive a single goal. 4 against munich? no.

for the next season they should look after a sovereign young keeper, who also brings along some experience and consistent performance (!). they should not again buy a keeper aged around 32 who's gonna retire in 2 or 3 years, because team and gk must be more brought in. therefore wenger has to stop switching between lehmann and almunia every 3rd game.

and btw, wenger is missing an alternative to lauren (evra, essien, lahm?)

exactly, and eboue is only 21 i believe. he will surely still develop and also senderos is a big talent, but arsenal urgently need a class defender with experience who proves to be a real alternative to sol or toure.

not the "sol is out for 2 weeks -> our defense isn't competitive anymore" stuff. look at BM, your opponent on wednesday: kuffour, linke, sagnol, lizarazu, kovac, lucio. no coincidence that the first match ended 3:1.

if arsenal wants to win the champions league within the next few years, the can't settle with talents only.

On the Goalkeeper front, why doesn't Wenger try Taylor? he is a great keeper, I thought he would finally get a go seeing as the other two are bungling bufoons!

Abbiati is leaving for good, but it seems Palermo is his destination. Frey is going for good, but then again Inter seemed to have snapped him as Toldo was already relegated to the bench on the weekend.

Too true...

Wenger just doesnt seem interested in him but I think he's a top draw keeper. Needs more first team exp tho, and there's only one way to get that!

Its quite clear that Wenger just doesn't rate Taylor, believe me, if he did then he would have had a decent chance by now to stake his claim. He played a few games in our 2001/02 title win as he got a medal. But this was mainly down to an injury crisis in his position with both Seaman and Wright out at the same time. Taylor was 3rd choice then and he is still 3rd choice now.

I would love to see him have a few games but tbh I think his chance has gone. Its sad when Wenger seems to rate Almunia above Taylor.

I remember Taylor playing really well, when he had his liitle stint in goal. I'm sure he will be off soon if he doesn't get a game, if he doesn't get a chance now I don't think he ever will!

Is a shame, We will probably sell him and he will be great for another team!

I remember Taylor playing in goal for the CL game against Valencia that costed Arsenal qualification for the next round. He was terrible in goal, and let Carew score twice.

If memory serves me right, he couldn't do anything with either goal. It was Wiltord's error that gifted Carew his second.

When he was a regular, he was a great keeper. He then began to lose his spot to Dida. He was one of the reasons why Milan won the league in 1998.

I think Abbiati is a decent keeper, hes got good shot blocking abilities... and was once the 3rd GK for Italy. Hes not world class, but imo hes better than Almunia and Lehmann.

Forget Lahm, he is going back to Bayern after this season!

lahm needs to watch out that he does not share tobias rau's fate in munich. the competition and quality in bayern munich's defense is surely larger than in the most other european teams. but we will to see how he develops, i regard philip lahm as one of the most talented german players of the last years.

I was watching the Chelsea last night and after they went 3-0 up I was thinking "We need something like this tommorrow!". Still not sure what to think about tonight, I feel we have goals to score but can we keep a clean sheet? This is the key to the tie.

Bergy is back and if he plays well, we play well. If he can pull the strings for Henry, Pires, Ljungberg then we have a great chance of progressing. Toure\Senderos have a chance to show that they are a good enough pairing tonight.

Basically, we need a monster performnace tonght, like Inter away 5-1.

i'm definetly looking forward to this one tonight. from what i've heard, bayern does not know yet exactly whether they should start with one or two strikers. makaay is injured, and i think pizarro will be the only striker tonight, as he is in top form and with one striker they can bring another midfielder, who will be deisler.

who do you think is going to replace pires? will it be fabregas or even van persie? and will it be cygan for sol campbell again? if i was wenger, i might switch toure for center back set cygan as a side-back. pizarro will be a dangerous threat tonight, and munich also have this youngster - guerrero. plus michael ballack is back from injury, maybe viera needs to take care of him because he's always in for goals.

arsenals biggest problem tonight will surely be the defence again, and they need to make one or two goals quickly, which leaves them in a dangerous postion. you're always in a rush, and vulnerable at the back. they should pop off a rapid start like chelsea yesterday.

Indications are that Pires will start, if not then he will be on the bench and Reyes will start. Cygan is injured. Edu is a doubt. I expect the team to be something like this:

Lehmann

Lauren Toure Senderos Cole

Ljungberg Vieira Flamini\Edu Pires\Reyes

Bergkamp

Henry

We need an early goal

is that a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1? looks a bit defence-orientated, not like scoring an early goal. on the other hand, we saw how werder bremen got trashed by lyon yesterday. they were in a similar situation as arsenal before the match, although they lost 3-0 and at home. but the needed three goals, too - and quick. the 7-2 was mostly a reward for their offensive lineup, a 4-3-3 without a densive midfielder.

don't you think that senderos or flamini might be a weak point against the experienced bayern midfield?

i suppose munich begins with pizarro as the only center. Beside demichelis, torsten frings plays in the defensive centre zone, in order to make the areas close and to hold away arsenal right from the start. the quick ze roberto and deisler might support ballack in the centre zone.
or they play with deisler as an offensive midfielder or even hanging forward behind pizarro. ballack, frings and ze roberto as a compact central midfield behind him, and demichelis trying to make space for ballack.

i think it also depends on henry's form, as his performances sometimes differ like day and night. two weeks ago he was non-existet.

Its 4-4-2 but Bergkamp plays a little deeper than Henry. I am not sure how you can say its defence orientated with Henry, Bergkamp, Pires, Ljungberg in the team.

Senderos is maybe a weak point, but we don't have anyone else. Flamini is quality, he has been excellent lately and played in the Marseille team in the UEFA Cup final last season, so he is young but has big match European experience.

The key is Bergkamp, if he plays well we play well. I don't think its fair to single out Henry for his performance in Munich, as every player had a bad game, not just Thierry.

i know what you mean, but it seems as within 15 minutes of the match played, you can guess if this is a good or a bad day for henry. he's not one of the strikers who does not seem to be on the pitch for most of the game, just to score the winner in the last minutes (like ronaldo, makaay or crespo): he's no phantom

sometimes henry runs and fights like hell, scores and sets up one magic goal after another (inter 5-1, great game aginst celta vigo last cl season), and the other day it seems as he completely loses interest in the whole game (e.g. when being covered aggressive, or when the first passes don't come and arsenal does not play well). as an arsenal fan you know what i mean, because i often read on here that "henry seems a bit overplayed" or "tired". from a worldstar like henry i expect more than that.

about the defence-orientated thing: the 4-2-2 with henry and bergkamp upfront isn't defensive in general, but don't forget that arsenal needs two goals and you said by yourself that a fast goal would be helpful.

now you have a regular 4-4-2 with 2 wingers (ljungberg, pires/reyes) and 2 strikers (bergkamp/henry), but also 2 defensive midfielders. not particularly offensive-orientated considering the fact that you need at least two or three goals, that's what i mean.

basically the same formation as two weeks ago with bergkamp for reyes, flamini for edu (why doesn't he play btw) and senderos for cygan or am i wrong?

Yeah you are right about Henry, he needs to be in the mood to play well. But to be honest if he ain't in the mood tonight then he might as well retire now, its the CL 2nd round. Henry, we need you tonight.

Yes its the same, but Edu is injury doubt I expect him to play Flamini for his experience but don't be surprised to see Fabregas come on as his extra creativity could be the difference.

We need an early goal.. that would boost the team i reckon. It's time we did something quality like Butatista said, 5-1 v Inter.

excellent first half by munich, they have arsenal in the pocket apart from henry's chance and the last 5 minutes. arsenal seems well better than two weeks ago, but still not enough to threaten the bayern defence.

nice effort by henry, this guy's a rocket. good save by kahn aswell as he clearly aimed for the long hand corner. if arsenal can keep up the drive of the last 5 minutes in the second half, it'll be a though fight. looking forward to it!

Not determined enough in the last 10 minutes. TOure was too relaxed. Henry on the other hand was Arsenal's best. His pre-match words were useful as he seemed to be the most determined on the field.

Nice run, but not quite this season.

A depressing end to a depressing season... what happened to the Arsenal of 03/04.

Bollocks.. fucking bollocks :(
