It was a terrible performance, Bayern didn't exactly play well either but we could have easily have lost this 4-0, thats how bad it was.

Some observations:

1. Why play Freddie up top when he is in-effective in this position? It takes him away from his most effective position on the wings where can cut in and support the front two.

2. Pires on the right, it don't work.

3. Reyes, his form is shocking at the moment, he doesn't warrant a starting place.

The fact that we scored a consolation away goal near the end shouldn't cloud the fact that unless we can keep a clean sheet at Highbury then we are out. On last nights display, what is the chance of that?

Of course, dont get me wrong you never know whats gonna happen, now the league is out of your hands and your playing for third, you should be able to concentrate on Europe.

Do you not think though, that with your current team past its peak that the chance has gone?

Yeah, I agree to a certain extent. I think our best chance for CL glory was last season, but we fucked that one up as well.

Playing for third? ha ha very funny. I could say then that you are playing for second. Just like us.

Absolutely f*cking gutted...

Wenger believes his side have the character to recover from what he admitted was their worst ever Champions League display in losing 3-1 in Munich last night.

Lets begin by looking at our team...

- Campbell may not play in return leg.

- Toure's loss of confidence.

- Edu also having suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury.

- Dennis Bergkamp appeal rejected - a three-match ban.

- Jose Antonio Reyes could also be suspended for the next three games

We had 56% from the whole game, yet couldn't manage a decent attack! I wonder if Roberto Kovac has any lint left over from Rio's pocket... 2 big games, and Henry in 2 international defenders pockets.

Sorry, but in all the time I have watched Arsenal in this competition, it is clear that not one lesson has been learned.

...I would love to say I was surprised by Arsenal's performance, but this is a continual problem in Europe. Individual and collective defensive errors were once again at the fore, but it would seem churlish to continue harping on about the same old deficiencies without addressing why they are not going away.

Without a doubt two of the most important men at Highbury failed us last night. Arsene Wenger and Thierry Henry have been and will continue to be vital cogs in the fantastic achievements that Highbury has been and Ashburton Grove will be privileged to see. However, I would like to deal with their flaws individually.

Thierry Henry...was unbelievably poor last night. It was not just his performance that was wrong, he was a negative impetus on the entire team. The lack of effort was manifest and the fact that Gael Clichy, Jose Antonio Reyes and Flamini kept trying was a credit to themselves rather than one of their supposed leaders.

In fact Henry's attitude was so negative that he even proactively demoralised his own teammate. I do not know if anyone else noticed the free-kick that Reyes hit just over the bar in the second half, but Henry's gesticulations about the best way to claim a free-kick cannot have done his confidence much good. Does this highlight a split in the dressing-room? Henry must not hide in the big games, he is now one of the leaders of the team and must take that mantle not just in his performance, but in his behaviour too.

I am sorry to say this but Arsene Wenger...has has a terrible season. In the last four or five years Arsenal have lost: Seaman, Dixon, WInterburn, Bould, Keown, Adams, Kanu, Wiltord and Parlour. In the summer they seem set to lose Edu. None of these players have been effectively replaced in terms of depth of influence.

When Arsenal were playing their beautiful football and could do no wrong it made no difference. There is no motivation needed for a succesful team. However, the backbone of the team has changed to such an extent that for the new players being schooled at Highbury there is no such thing as 'the Arsenal way'. That is not necessarilly a negative thing. If Campbell, Vieira, Bergkamp, Pires, Ljungberg and Henry under the guidance of Wenger created a new Arsenal way. However, I am not sure if any of them know what that way is apart from a vague affiliation to fast, attacking football.

Many will ask what I mean when I say a vague affiliation to fast, attacking football. In big games particularly in Europe and often against Manchester United, Arsenal have been found wanting. Why? Arsene Wenger admits he is perplexed and this is a major worry.

It is very simple. In an important game big players and big coaches develop very specific plans to deal with the threat of their opponents. Arsenal do not do this. I wish we were good enough not to have to, but we are not and no one ever is. The lack of specific plans demonstrate the lack of a cohesive 'Arsenal way'. You should set aside time to work on a plan B, but we have none. A European knockout game is not the place to try out a new formation that just doesn't work... just ask Sven when to use it.

You must plan for your opponents' stregnths and weaknesses as well as exploiting your own stregnths and working on your own weaknesses.

This brings us on to the final Wenger fault. He does not do the last thing either. Why do Arsenal not work on set plays - defensive or attacking. Is there something wrong with it? Clearly not, but I am waiting to see the result.

Finally, I just want to say that Arsenal are a fantastic team and Henry and Wenger are worthy of all of our respect, but no one is above criticism.

Purtton is an idiot. He does a terrible tackle on Pires, which should be a direct red, but decides to attack the linesman. Doesnt he realize what he had done?

On Italian Sky they even called him an "Idiota". He can ruin people's careers. What an idiot.

ps - and what an ugly hair cut.

PRATton. What a retarded fuck. The second tackle was horrible and the first could have been so much worse for Flamini if it wasn't for his awareness in avoiding the bulk of it. Then, that silly-as-fuck behaviour after he was sent off. He pushes the referee then has a go at the linesman and even when Redknapp and Smith are trying to restrain him. To think that Reyes and Dennis get 3 matches each for handbags and Prutton will likely only serve the mandatory one match ban.

The worst that's come out of it, though, is the injury to Pires though. It looks to be ligaments though which is bad, bad news.

All this and I haven't even started with the game yet. Lehmann had a good game right up until that corner. Another goalkeeping error. Senderos and Cygan played very decently, eventually, though for a pair that get very few first team apperances and even fewer together. Flamini was class throughout. Cole played tremendously as the drifting winger too, after Van Persie's sending off. Good to see we didn't give up the fight and without some exceptional goalkeeping we would have won that tie but that's our luck at the moment.

Also, Van Persie's sending off was justified.

Nasty, Dont suppose you could post Fabregas and Laurens tackles from the games last week could you ?

Oh and post Reyes' slap aswell please!

What the fuck has that got to do with today's match? Neither were playing!!

Gutted we didn't win after all those chances, but as much as Lehmann will get criticism, I blame Van Persie, what an idiot. :applause:

Wenger looked pissed at Van Persie after his sending-off, does anyone have any idea what he said to him?
Did you guys see how Ljunberg made fun of Bernard after he fell early in the match?

i just have a question. when people like robin van persie received his first booking (elbowing rory delap after the saints defender beat him) and they argue with referee alan wiley about receiving the card, what on earth could they possibly be arguing about? this isn't just about van persie, but anybody who tries to plead their case when receiving a yellow for an elbow, what are they thinking?

yea, exactly like that. what goes through the minds of the players when they protect themselves like that? did they honestly feel that what they did was right? what with the shrugging of the shoulders and the hands raised up like "wot? ME? A FOUL!?"

Im extremely pleased to be through th the quarters as it represents our most relaistic chance of a trophy this season.
When it went to pens. I seriously thought it wasnt gonna be our day. But Almunia came through and saved the day.

Dont know why but i thought the Sheffield Utd keeper looked pathetic in the shoot-out. Almunia looked alot more confident he was gona save something.

To me, it look like their keeper's injury was hampering him a bit. His right hip was bothering him and surprise, surprise all our pens went to his right, he dived to his left everytime.

Glad to be through, bring on Bolton.

i was thinking about buying an arsenal dvd the other day, since i admire their style of play at that time. so what do you lot say,

Kenny played well, but Arsenal dominated the game and should have scored atleast one goal during regulation time. If they make the same mistake against Bolton and don't take their chances, it will be good night Arsenal and anyhope of silverware for this season.

i have alot of respect of henry

You are right, as well as being a genius on the pitch, Titi has proved to be a very intelligent human being. His views\arguments on this subject are very well thought out and I for one have tremendous respect for the guy.

Good performance from the lads today nice to see Henry's back to his scoring ways. Come on Gunners, this thread was bustling a few months ago when things were looking much more rosy. Makes me wonder how many real fans vs. fairweatherers are up in here. Anyway, hope this win sets a good attitude for the match against Bayern.

arsenal could've done 50 unbeaten , that would've been straight.

Who the Fuck are you? Mr 44 posts. Perhaps if you contibuted more it would be a bit more bustling as you put it.

TBH, in a twisted sorta way im actually really enjoying watching Arsenal at the moment. It was almost like the unbeaten run was hanging a bit heavy around the team's neck, Arsenal were the 'team to beat', everyone was goin out of their way to try and stop the ridiculous 'unbeatable' superlatives that were being thrown around willy nilly.

But the whole circus has now passed over the team and Arsenal have been forced to play back to basics football. Also the run of injuries/suspensions has given opportunities to younger players like Fabregas, Senderos and more recently Quincy MD. Its likely that we would have seen all these players in at least some capacity this season, but not in such quantity without all these first team absentees (count your blessings I guess).

I personally think you can only REALLY judge the true character and spirit of a side when things are not going so well. Its easy for everyone to be all smiles and hugs when you dont lose for a whole season, but when the chips are down (even tho they've had some poor results here and there) I genuinely believe that Arsenal have handled themselves admirably. We dont defend like we used to, but the strike force is as sharp as ever really. When we get all the old heads back in the team and spend some of the £20 million promised in the summer I reckon we'll be back to challenge for the highest honours again next season. So chin up Gooners! This is probably the reality check the team really needed to get our feet back on the ground, end all this rubbish talk about 'unbeatable' and just play proper football again.

Wenger said today that he only wants to buy older 'star' players, who can have an immeadiate impact, so as not to push the young players back down the pecking order with more young, work-in-progress style talent. Personally Id like;

Ledley King
SWP
Javier Mascherano
A new keeper, preferably Carlos Kameni or Antti Neimi

Thoughts?

Ledley King and Sol Calmpbell at CB. lol

Yeah im glad hes come out and said that hes going to buy older players, coz thats what we need.
Our youth team is already sorted.
