why didnt he just hoof it clear at times?
Partly because ping-pong assisted passing usually makes it so easy to move the ball up the field while keeping possession, I guess.

On a similar note, I was wondering the other day... why do most gamers opt to take short goal kicks so often rather than launching it long like the vast majority of real goal kicks? We all do it, probably without realising that it's not what you'd normally see on a Saturday.

I was at a sport conference once and they showed possession statistics for short/long goal kick in different time range (let's say 5 sec, 10 sec, 20 sec, 30 sec etc).

no surprise short goal kick have a great advantage in ball possession.

Having said that, i usually go long range in footie game to avoid the boredom of short kicks and to open up the game as much as possible

One, is that it's genuinely more effective in football games to just pass the ball forwards knowing you can find targets with relative ease, compared to the lack of control involved in just hoofing it up. This is just as true of PES which actively encourages passing short (hence Konami force your strikers to be right near the halfway line at every gk). There's also generally little advantage to hoofing the ball up unless you are playing Clubs and the supporting striker makes the right run in behind the defence. One of the things I've suggested recently to EA is to try to better tie in their awesome deflection system to flick-ons and to trying to get a toe onto crosses etc. Combined with better AI runs onto potential flick-ons I think it'd make a world of difference for the less technical teams.

The second reason of course is that it's more fun to pass it about than hoof the ball.

Anyway.....I really noticed the difference between home and away last night, playing some qualifiers with Australia.

Tw*tted Iraq 6-1 at home (4-0 up at half time and just playing it around to keep possession/save energy) then the next game was the return "leg" - they beat me 3-1.

I seemed to get less decisions go my way and found the whole game quicker.

The mouth drools imagining this with club teams!

Watch a live game... unless you are watching Barcelona (and possibly Arsenal, Man U or Chelsea), then the amount of aimless balls lumped forward is quite surprising.

And especially in that video - he is under pressure at the back and ping pong passes it around to get it away. That would NEVER happen (unless you are Brazil '70 :LOL:), so I dont mind mixing it up with a big hoof, especially when under pressure at the back.

Its percentage football and in my opinion, looks better (more realistic), than inch perfect passing between centre halves to get the ball out of danger - and as happened to the knob here, you get caught in possession (then start swearing at the TV).
 
Anyone know if there's a way to select World Cup 2010 stadiums in online multiplayer mode? I've noticed the stadiums are randomly assigned by the system. I have yet to play in a South Africa Word Cup stadium. Love the pitch textures on those.
 
pboreham - I'm not disputing that at all. I was talking about football games, not football. Long goal kicks are favoured in real life because it means you gain a lot of ground in a short space of time and can either win the ball high up the pitch or pressure the other team deep in their half. If teams always passed short at goal kicks the other side would push right up to start pressuring them as soon as possible. They drop deep at the moment because they know the long ball is coming.

My point was that in football games (PES included) the relative merits of long balls vs short passes is misrepresented, so, unlike real life, there is less benefit to be gained playing that way.
 
Sadly I think shipping to Gravesend from Prizren means it will cost more than 19.99 even if Tim imported it.

Ah fair enough! I just like to play realistically if I can to make the matches look good and it would do my head in 'pinging' it around like that, even if it made the game 'easier to beat'.
 

Nice ones! I've scored a beauty of a volley yesterday while playing vs. a friend of mine online w/ manual controls. Unfortunately, the camera angles suck and so does the general quality of my vid cause I was dancing all over the place and stuff. But still you should be able to comprehend what happened here. It starts with a long cross from the far left side towards the edge of the penalty area where one of my Mexican strikers is only waiting with a serious plan in mind...

I'm also totally in love with this update. Absolutely exceeded all of my expectations.

I'd say they've got the shooting physics almost spot on, really can't see much room for improvement, proper sense of shot power now, can really thump a ball the way we used to in the old days with that other game.

Haha, thanks :) It was definitely the best goal I've ever scored in any football game in the last ten years, I'd say. Still, though, too bad the quality of the vid stinks. Oh, and you're a bit better off watching it on youtube instead of the embedded link here.

Do you not think the ball still seems to travel really flatly? I know shots can move like that in real life, but the lack of dip or drop on many of the shots is why shooting from 40 yards is still far too accurate.

I definitely agree the oomph is there now, though it needs to be improved for 70 degree shots a la Robben cutting in on his left; I just think the ball travels too often as if it has been hit perfectly.

A lot of first time shots on the full/half volley can have loads of dip in WC10 from what I've seen, seems to depends on how you approach the ball and how your foot strikes it, scored a lovely equaliser v Argentina where Huddlestone ran on to a Gerrard knockdown to half volley it with the outside of his right foot :)
