2010 FIFA World Cup

so far i'm liking the demo,

the atmosphere is good, i have the crowd noise a couple of notches higher than the rest. it makes it sound like the clive and andy are having to talk louder to be heard over the crowd.

the new chest animations are alot better, chesting and turning is good and also it takes less time to bring the ball down.

the pitch and general lighting and look of game is far superior to 10.

the game feels a bit more weighty in general, which is good.

also got the keeper sent off for taking me down in the box, finally. but still haven't seen a penalty for a standing challenge and i should have had a couple.

Only played about 10 games so far due to me having a great night with the Blu Rays on Fifa Clubs.

I guess the first thing that impresses is the look of the menus. Made easier as its a World Cup with an African theme to it but i hope Fifa11 can in some way get a similar make over. Obviously not with an African theme but hopefully you catch my drift.

Graphics look gorgeous. The pitch has nice texture and colour and looks very realistic. The players faces from the 2 teams we have to choose from are really impressive. Casillias (spelling?), Del Peiro, Torres just to name a few look so much better than in Fifa10. EA have upped their game on this area but i guess as these are 2 of the big teams they will be much better then say Belgium and the like (no offence to the Belgians).

Entrance to the match is nice. I love the sweeping view over the stadium, blimp view and all that. Think the confetti is overdone a bit.

Gameplay wise the game does feel improved although not greatly. As expected though so im not dissapointed at all. Only played 10 games so havnt noticed to much in the way of changes but with a 2 min half i dont expect to. Shooting seems better but not managed to get off many long rangers as of yet. Scored a nice sliding goal with Alonso which looked nice. Ive heared moans about the replays having a bad framerate but in my ps3 they play out smooth and seems improved over Fifa10.
What does concern me is the speed of the game. It still plays too fast, even on slow. Pressure is still too high from the cpu which leads to having to by pass any build up play. Why cant EA get this right. Reduce the speed and pressure and the game will play out more tactically. Once again players like Pirlo, Xavi and Ineista will have no more advantage over your Barry's. Which results in less player individuality, again something that Fifa has been lacking.

Yes to the new sub animations. Finally. A small addition but it all adds to the experience.

Love the Managers. The 2 managers look very realistics but i do think the manager cutscenes are a little to frequent. Maybe this will be tuned down a bit with the final release version.

I also like the stat layout at the end of the game with the player ratings etc layed out in a formation style. Very clear and i hope that is in Fifa11.

Why no penalty tryout in the demo. Its a massive inclusion this year, shame. I have not yet had a penalt in game so cannot comment on them.

Overall i like the demo. Not a huge leap but more of a few steps in the right direction. If only they addressed the speed/pressure then this game would be truly awesome. I will be buying it though thats for sure.

Oh and the atmosphere....nearly forgot.....I LOVE IT!

PS; 2 min halfs EA? C'mon!

Are lobbed shots still overpowered? I keep going for possession play, getting around 80% of the ball over the course of a match, rather than actually attacking!

I did score a lob with Rossi that was actually more of a dink - keeper was coming out and I dinked the ball up to about chest height to beat him. I've also hit a 'lob' that didn't even leave the ground - my player was under pressure at the time.

I noticed that lob passes (not lobbed through balls) seem to be a lot lower and faster, to the point where you can't just dink the ball over a player to find the guy behind him. Don't know if that's what other people have noticed too...

Everything is pergect for except the game speed. It has quick player reaction, even on slow speed. I hope they can tune it down a bit. Can they make it or the game is finished and gone gold?

Gone gold I'd have thought. It's out really soon isn't it? Or have I imagined this? Not followed this game at all really.

When I get a chance I'll upload some simple left stick dribbling. As I said, it's not really for beating several players; just working out of a tight spot and creating space for yourself.

Out 30th April I beleive. Which means that it's probably gone gold but also that the demo is not the final build.

3- Lame defending AI. Now look closely the 2 players that are following Torres. First, they are unaware of the pass. Second, they suddenly stop following him by no reason and seem to go somewhere else or simply face a completely irrelevant direction. And once the CPU realises Torres is controlling the ball, then they get activated again towards him. How sad... it makes what should be a decent goal replay turn into a joke.
Yuck.

Pause at 3 seconds, just as Torres is about to control the first pass. There are three Italians in the left back area, none within five yards of Torres, and there are two more Italians holding hands on the edge of the D, nowhere near Villa and five yards deeper than the rest of the defence! The midfield is completely disjointed as usual, too.

The main comedy comes when the dark-haired Italian (Grosso?) starts to track Torres' run but decides to give up and run the other way, and the bald Italian (Cannavaro?) who starts to move across to cover Torres then also stops and runs in the opposite direction, despite the fact that Torres is about to collect the ball in front of goal.

In fact, just focus on the bald Italian defender for the entire replay. In no-man's land, not marking anyone, not in line with anyone (first he's the deepest, then he ends up ahead of both fullbacks), and not anticipating the runner. A world class centre-back.

I disagree Nerf, besides Cannavaro's stutter when the ball is played through, I see mostly the CPU covering space in a suitable way.

It's not perfect, but it's not unacceptable to me (besides the stutter)

Grosso does indeed stop chasing Torres when the ball gets passed to the latter though...and such behaviour makes very little sense, seeing as he couldn't have intercepted the ball anyway (so why would the AI tell him to stop in first place...that's a glitch right there).

Yes, I agree, having looked at it again, he also does the stutter/jerky backwards and forwards motion like he's forgotten which way he's defending - fair point

Beyond the defenders not tracking things and being unaware of danger (when the ball is loose inside the area it's a joke to see some defenders going to absurd directions) and beyond speed and high pressure, people seems to be ignoring the big flaw of always having strikers unmarked. If in multiplayer one of the two (or both) use it often, the game turns a shoot-fest. It is damn clear this is broken.

I must be the only person that thinks the game speed is ok.:CONFUSE: And I play on normal.

Modern football is played at pace, and besides, most people will play 10 minute matches so perhaps the game speed has to be faster than real-life in order to simulate all the events of a real match in a short space of time.

Ok, let me have it.:COAT:

Problem is that there is no reason to not pressure the CPU (or the CPU pressure you), because your players don't get tired.

Look at the high pressure Barcelona put on Arsenal, after around 70 minutes of that pressure most of them started to get tired and had to stop doing it. That is how it should be, we shouldn't have to pretend that we don't pressure because the players would get tired.

Edit: Also the reason for full 70 minutes of pressure is because they win back the ball so quickly. If they didn't they could never do it that long.

nah, i agree with you.

if you don't sprint everywhere and don't pressure the AI constantly the game slows down in general.

Exactly, I've been playing some nice build-up play in the midfield, playing along the back line when there's no openings - to me the game can be slowed down. While the AI pressure in this game is overdone, I appreciate that time on the ball is precious in real-life football. It's not the seventies where players walk around the pitch and your playmaker has 10 minutes on the ball to make a pass.

True. But I don't pressure the opposition continually because I don't want my team to lose it's shape.

If the pressure is the same as FIFA 10, I'm going to hate this :( I'll give the demo a go later but I'm not optimistic.

that statement is spot on, i always try not to commit players.

i usually try and control a player that is covering a run and use the secondary pressure button to put a little pressure on the ball carrier (i don't just hold down the secondary pressure button)

I think the game is fantastic.

had some "magic moments"

Put del piero on so start a match and he scored 2 screamers- one outside the box, on an angle, arrowed into the top corner. Second, he chested down a mid height cross on the edge of the d of the box, and swept it first time in the bottom corner.

done some great dribbles with Silva.

That said I also had a Pirlo penalty, thought I hit it right, and i skied it.

Need to play more of this as everyone seems to love it... :CONFUSE:

Mind you that was the way with 10 too...:JAY:

Just play it a few times more mate. Play it like you would a real futbol match; pass the ball around, switch the field with long balls to an open player on the wing, build up your play tactically, do some one two's, send some wicked crosses, set up your forwards with some lovely through balls, or unleash a belter from outside the box. Yes, I know...You only have 2mins to do all this, but just try it. I find this game very rewarding and fun.

Feel the game mate, feel the game..

try holding close control and walking about in the centre circle, i find i get loads of time on the ball and can pass around for ages.

i play full manual on world class (not boasting, just in case anybody was wondering)

Pictures speak louder than words, so I'll throw these up. Perhaps not the right thread, but while we're on the subject...

Here are two separate examples from this week of the moment a player is about to release an attempted through ball from about 30/35 yards out. Look how Arsenal's defenders set up (even if the line isn't perfectly horizontal, it's their intent we're looking at).

1.

2.

To contrast with FIFA Italy's trademark 'startled starfish' defensive approach to the exact same scenario:

Do these screamers people speak of actually feel good or is it just going to be the same 'sweetspot' style of Fifa where you know that in certain situations you can't miss.

A real factor of Fifa 10 that bored me quickly was that you can only score about 5 different types of goals and they always feel the same.

Screamers still don't have the up and down of real life, and you don't get bouncing shots that worry the keeper, but otherwise they do feel better.

Regarding the pace of the game, Im happy that it's representative of real football. I use slow settings and I play possession football, and I think the play feels great. Passing inaccuracy is what slows me down when I use semi assisted and I think my play is at an ideal pace; however on assisted it naturally gravitates toward something that is just too fast and pingpongy.

The problem people have with pressing is that hard pressing is not really seen as a tactic with it's own pros and cons, but as something that is par for the course. I wasn't expecting WC 2010 to be the one to change this though.

i scored a shot from about 25 yards out with De Rossi, it bounced right in front of the keeper and flew under his hand (fully extended dive) and into the corner, never saw anything like it in 10.
