The Retro-PES Corner

all this talk about favourite pes titles makes me wonder.

A question to you guys :)

What is your current PES that you play the most and why?
I think out of all of them that I played,

WE9LE
WE8LE
WE2008
PES2008
JLWE2008CC
JLWE9AC

I think JLWE9AC is the best of them all. For some reaaon it seperates itself from the others. Every match feels different. Every team feels different. It feels and plays how a real football match should be played. I love FIFA 16 and PES 21 / FL 26 but none give me that OHHH AHHH EHHH type of feeling like JLWE9AC does. I truly get upset for making stupid, dumb mistakes when playing this game. TO ME, it has the best bal physics of any WE/PES title.

If I had to rate them all by a system.

PS1: ISS 98 Pro Evo 2
PS2: JLWE9AC
PS3: PES 13
PS4/PC: (a) PES 17, (b) PES 19 (c) PES 21

Overall best game: JLWE9AC (tier 1), FIFA 16 (tier 2), PES 17 (tier 3), PES 19/21 (tier 4).

But if I had to only pick one and never look back it would be JLWE9AC.

Best of the best

Hi everyone! I have a question and I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 2013 patch for PES 2021, and I've unlicensed the entire Spanish League, so I'm getting the default Konami kits. When I try to add my own kits in Edit Mode, look how they appear...
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about kits or how to fix this, or if anyone can help me?

Thanks in advance! And sorry for the trouble. 💪🙏

I prefere to play on PC with PES 2021 or FL2026 only with modded gameplays in the exe directly by me.... I’ve never worn nostalgia glasses for previous titles once new title was released; each year I played and learned to play only on the new game.. I used this method since 30 years I play with konami's soccer games.... Now that I’ve got used to the controls and gameplay of PES 2021, I just can’t enjoy the old games any more; Once each time I try to play with one game of PS2 era I don't finish the first half time of the match for the limits of the game, commands and movements of the engine... very boring.... while at the time I loved them so much... but also on PES 2021 I play only some times because get more enjoyment out of trying to tweak the gameplay and seeing the results in-game (so that’s when I play... when I’m testing them 😜 ) than actually playing the game and getting immersed in it for even more than half an hour… whereas I can spend hours testing new gameplay tweaks just to get a feel for how they work and the feeling I can appreciate with gamepad in my hands...

To be honest, video games in general as a form of entertainment have bored me for some time now (since PES2017 time; perhaps because of my age and the importance I now place on other aspects of life), and I hardly ever finish a 10-minute game… These days, apart from the mood-setting aspect, video games no longer entertain me… only on the odd evening when I’m not sure how to pass 10 minutes and want to relax do I play a friendly match against the CPU… although, to be honest, I’ve always done that, ever since the days of PES6… I’ve never actually played through entire Master League seasons from start to finish.

Mind you, back then even games with just 10-minute exhibition matches kept me more entertained, but even then I spent a lot of time on the more famous forums for pes pc (since 2002 – mostly teaching people how to patch the PC versions rather than anything else

Just so you know, if you’ve had the chance to enjoy the Korean version of WE9LE, it was my fault... 👈😜 (the last link still online as evidence)

– back when I shared the PC version with english patch outside Korea market on all international forums where people still played PES5, nobody in the west world of PES even realised it existed in Korea a version of PES5 with a new gameplay with a better felling through gamepad

Note: I’ve always played exclusively on PC, even when the first games from Japan came out (pirated copies bought on the beach from illegal Moroccan vendors) using emulators that were already quite advanced back in the PS1 era. I never had a console to play wiinning eleven or to other videogames

Nostalgia Googles ? Lol.....this guy told me same thing when I told him football in the 90s and early 2000s was much better than the product we have today. Back in the day you could have 10 players that could win Ballon d'Or award. I was told I had nostalgia googles on as todays footballers are superior.

These newer games offer better graphics and other enhancements but lack the soul, gameplay and the feel of how a real football match should be played.

I've always said this, if PES 21 was so great, it wouldn't need so many different gameplays which many, if not all offer minimal differences and possibly placebo affect as well. Vanilla PES 21 without any mods makes you want to play 5 matches and be done with. Older PES titles were a joy to play out of the box.

To many, fancy flashy animations and graphics don't mean anything is the gameplay is broken.

I wanted to write nostalgia glasses and not Google... You are right... football on 90s and early 2000s was much better than today...

But regarding konami games at the time I played all games you now still love with the same love you have and more... but not today for me... As far as I’m concerned, each one always had its day every year when the new version came out… In my view, many console gamers remained stuck on the PS2 version, never really getting to grips with the new generations of games that followed or learning how to use them properly… but that’s just my personal opinion as a PC gamer who’s patched every game and been able to enjoy each new edition to the full right up to the very end.

Gameplays mods used to be technically unfeasible due to a lack of knowledge… but today everyone (i think most of new generation gamers) compulsively switches between gameplay's mods without ever actually playing any of them only to have the last game-play…

a sign of the times, TikTok-style tossic society

Vanilla PES 21 without any mods makes you want to play 5 matches and be done with. Older PES titles were a joy to play out of the box.

You’re right that the standard gameplay gets boring after five matches… that’s why I play it with mods and initially I created my "back to the past" gameplays… otherwise I’d still be playing PES 2017 on my PC but not but certainly games from the PS2 era and rails movements on only 8 directions stick

So you can have your opinions... mine are differents... so accept also that for me PES 2021 it's better not only for graphic and animations as I think to have explained in my previous post.

But as I said, immersing myself completely in a video game has become boring for me anyway… I have much more fun experimenting and occasionally taking my mind off things with a 10-minute game against the CPU

So now I hope to answered to @TheTonyTornado question without touching sensibility of PS2 era game fans ;)

Opinions are to be respected of course but also debated as well. Again, if PES 21 was a great game even with mods then why is there so many different gameplays ? What are people chasing ? So many players switch these gameplay mods often which tells me one thing: they are not satisfied. They are investing more time modding the game then actually playing it. What once used to be playing is now called modding.

I’ve already given you a more detailed answer to that above however, As I said, it’s a sign of the times…

Personally, when I play PES 2021 or FL2026, I stick to my favourite game-plays (2 or 3 max), but every now and then I enjoy playing also many others gameplays from my "Back To The Past" series for PES2021/Football Life – just as you (with old PS2 games) can now switch from the gameplay of WE9LE on the PS2 to that of JLWE2008CC, and in a week’s time you’ll be back playing PES 6, perhaps… So I could ask the same question here to many who still play only with old ps2 games… why do you do it if they’re so much fun only with your prefered game?

There are many ps2 games fans here that writes they change games and play not only at their favorite one

More possibilities make man eager for a change

Back in the day, we only had one game for the whole year

now also old ps2 gamer lovers and collectors have all games in the same time and can choose to switch in each moment

I'm glad you can find and notice gameplay differences once applied on PES 21/FL 26, because I can't.

As far as going back and forth on PS2 title, I'm sticking with JLWE9AC as the primary football game. If I get bored with that, FIFA 16, FL 26 will get some attention.

For pure SKILL based football game, to this day nothing can touch Dino Dini's Kick Off 2 which I also play on my Amiga 500 system. From time to time I also hop on SWOS 2020 system which is GREAT. Having choices is great.. But I also do believe the fun factor decreaaes each year we get older. I'm 41 yrs old now. Gaming thirst definitely decreased. Lol

maybe you have installed a not worked mod... or you haven't deleted your SYSTEM00000000 file before switch to new mod

However Football Life 2026 has it's proper native gameplay by smoke team, respect latest pes2021 v1.07.02 by konami; so It's impossible you can't feel differences between two "native" versions of game if you played enough with vanilla pes 2021 v.10702

I too loved so much kick off 2 and Goal! by Dino Dini at amiga 500 era... but also with emulator today i can't play them anymore... as I said, for me, it's only nostalgia time...

As Yoda I'm 900 year old so i can understand... 😜

That was an interesting discussion, at the end of the day everyone has the right to have their favourite :)
Im 26 and most of my youth i played the newer games, even after the fall of PES i played FL 23/24 nonstop but something clicked, it felt to stiff and i wanted to explore ps2 games more, i started in january 2025 and i still play them, something about them being a time capsule of 00's football with a fun gameplay makes it click for me, but it does not mean that the FL or other "new" titles arent good, they just dont click for me.

I always had issues with PES 3 not recognising my xbox controller on PC
xbox controllers are XInput gamepads, while very old games on PC used and was developed for old direct input gamepads... maybe you can solve your issue by installing this drivers:

https://github.com/samuelgr/Xidi/releases

Xidi

Xidi improves the gameplay experience when using modern XInput-based controllers (such as Xbox controllers) with older games that use DirectInput or WinMM to communicate with game controllers. In more technical terms, Xidi provides both DirectInput and WinMM interfaces for games to use and communicates with XInput-based game controllers natively using XInput, translating between the two interfaces as needed.

Xidi is implemented as a library that games should load instead of the system-supplied versions. As such, it is a very localized fix: no installation is required, and no persistent system-wide changes are made.

Key Features

 • Fixes issues encountered in older games, such as broken analog controls, phantom button presses, or complete failure to commmunicate with the controller. Without Xidi these issues can come up in DirectInput-based or WinMM-based games when used with an XInput controller.
 • Enables customization of game controller behavior, including simulating keyboard key presses. This can help make controls more intuitive and bring full controller support to games that only implement partial controller support.
 • Allows controllers to be changed while a game is running. Older games do not normally support this, but with Xidi controllers can be plugged in, unplugged, and swapped seamlessly during gameplay. Without Xidi this would require exiting and restarting the game.

Limitations

Xidi is not useful if:

 • A game already uses the XInput API to communicate with controllers. These games would not benefit from Xidi.
 • The problem arises with controllers that are not XInput-based controllers. Xidi will not communicate with non-XInput controllers.
 • The problem arises from an older non-XInput controller being used with an XInput-based game. This is the inverse of the problem Xidi solves, for which solution like the Xbox 360 Controller Emulator or WoJ xinput emulator are needed.

you can try also this:

https://github.com/mentalfoundry/xinput-ffb-driver/releases

Installation

 1. Download xiffd-setup.msi from the Releases page.
 2. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
 3. In the feature selection screen, enable the entry for your controller.
 4. Complete the installation.
 5. Enable vibration/rumble in your game's settings.

xinput-ffb-driver

A COM-based DirectInput force feedback driver that bridges the gap between legacy DirectInput force feedback APIs and XInput-based Xbox controllers (360, One, and Series X|S). Allows games using DirectInput force feedback effects to drive rumble on Xbox controllers via XInput.

%ProgramFiles%\Force Feedback Driver for XInput\x64\xiffd.dll
%ProgramFiles%\Force Feedback Driver for XInput\x86\xiffd.dll
It also writes the COM server registration and per-controller registry keys under:

A COM-based DirectInput force feedback driver that bridges the gap between legacy DirectInput force feedback APIs and XInput-based Xbox controllers (360, One, and Series X|S). Allows games using DirectInput force feedback effects to drive rumble on Xbox controllers via XInput.
Thanks a lot for this l!

I can't recommend Pepe WE MX's patches for Winning Eleven 2002 enough... his work for the 2026 World Cup, which is completely free, has been giving me so much fun, especially now that I moved and have no console on me, only weak and/or old hardware that can't run anything besides this, or Netflix's title, which was more fun for me than for most people to be fair... but retro Winning Eleven is still 10x better. I love playing this classic, trying to do a run with Paraguay now and it's been fun, the 1-2 is very OP even on the Extreme 2.0 AI that was added by Pepe WE MX, a PS1 Winning Eleven staple.

Nice! Which PES 3 patch is that ? I always had issues with PES 3 not recognising my xbox controller on PC
its this one :)

it is made with love and even has tweaks to the gameplans of the teams, which made the game more challening i would say

When it comes to controller issues;
I had issues with analogs on my ps4 controller, i had to push them all the way for the input to register.

You could try using ds4windows and then it should be visible in the game.
If you would have trouble with analogs, then change the deadzone of the analog to 10% :)

I have the same problem with the xbox 360 controller on pc.
Bought a total new xb360 controller to play on 360 and on pc.
PES5 on xb360 plays like a charm obviously, but on the pc i have invested hours in this xinput problem (Dozen of drivers, tools you name it), and no matter what i play, somehow the controller doesnt work as it should be.
But nevermind (for now). Im gonna work it out somehow, sooner or later.

I have somethong else to say, though.
It is about WE6FE for the NGC.

I have translsted the game years ago (until 10 years ago, pretty much around this time), when i suddenly got heavy health problems, and since then, even though i beat the illness, i never felt "normal" since.
If its about life and death, at least in my case, i didnt think about gaming or anything else. Im sure the patch wouldve been finished already a long time ago if it wasnt for becoming (potentially terminally) ill.

A few month ago itried to look into everything again, but its overwhelming. I forgot about the majority.

And i would need help anyway, to finish this.
Especially with the bitmaps.
But im also looking for someone who might be able to make an option file editor for the NGC Version of WE6FE. That would be amazing.

I never wouldve put in so much work onto it, if it wasnt worth it.
WE6FE for the NGC is not only by far the best football game on the ngc, but it is also the superior version of the existing two (The other being the PS2 version).
And aside from WE9LE (and WE9JL), its my favourite football game ever.

So i would continue with the project, but only if i get some help from people who have the knowledge and who are serious about it.

There is obviously a lot more to talk about.
I also have some other ideas to improve the game. i tried out a few things, but wasnt actually very succesful.

Also im on my phone right now, and it sucks to type longer posts on the phone.

I haven't got any relevant skills to help but i just wanted to say well done on persevering through such a long period of ill health. It takes a lot of strength to do that and come out the other side

Also I have found an option file for we6fe on gamecube but I don't think that's what you're wanting after reading your post a second time

That is amazing! Well done on the translation. I know from my own experience how long and tiring that can be to. Out of all the translations for WE6FE on GC, which admittedly there aren't many of, yours is the most complete and comprehensive. Do you have a download link you can share?

I came across this,

Found it on this YouTube clip

Eager to now download NGC emulator and try it

A goal from today, you could feel the goal coming the moment the ball left the boot of Suganuma with that bounce.
I feel like it is sometimes too easy to score absolute stunners in this game but boy they are still satisfying.

I switch between JLWE2008CC and PES3, dont know if i ever scored a true long ranger in PES 3 lol

Hi Tonyy
Pls. I'm looking for where to download the Winning Eleven 7 International PC (English) The Wolf 2004-05 Patch or PES3 WOLF patch.

I'm looking for this specific WE7 patch. Has U2 beautiful day as the replay music.
here is the description : https://soccergaming.com/forums/threads/we7-i-pc-the-wolf-2004-05-patch.106386/

I've tried all platforms, so now Im just replying to people that may have played them recently

I think Winning Eleven 6 International was close, but not 100% accurate: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps2/562479-world-soccer-winning-eleven-6-international/faqs/19882

World Cup 2002 is a bit of a hole in this era of games in my experience, so I think a Winning Eleven 2002 patch for it would be your best bet: https://evoweb.uk/threads/winning-e...tch-world-cup-2002-and-season-2002-03.104115/
I thought there's an WE with the WC squad. Actually here's no.
Even WE 2002 was released before the final squads were submitted.

The only PS1 game that got it Pro Evolution 2.
