The Retro-PES Corner

Is there any official guide made by Konami during the PS2 era regarding how stats work?
Since PES 2009 PC/ PS3 had the same match engine as the PS2, I would say its official guide had the better explanation. But still I doesn't satisfy my curiosity.
I would add Teams guide section on PES6 guide as addition

Still I need to see if Winning Eleven 2010 and the early the PES guides have something different.

I’m also interested in the master league structure. Are the leagues A-D 20 teams then with 12 teams in D2? I’d have to create 12 Championship teams if that was the case for full ML immersion.
There are 12 teams in the D2 league, I can confirm. I don't know how many in the D1 league, but I think it's 16.

As far as I know, 20-team divisions exist in later versions.

I see the CPU dribbles in a straight line a lot when in your half, where you can maybe too easily stand and make a standing tackle. I know playing can feel different to watching though.
It's hard for me to compare, because I started playing these versions relatively recently. But I will take your observation into consideration to have a better vision for the gameplay.

But on the other hand, could this be a peculiarity of the tactics used by the AI-controlled team in the second division?

Hi, I'm playing your ISO. I wanted to ask. I see that after Sao Paulo, the Boca Juniors and River Plate kits are shown at approximately unknown 8600, but they don't appear in the game.
Do you know how I can activate those kits in-game?

Try Winning Eleven 6 FE PS2 with great gameplay, AI, graphic, vibe, animation and so realistic…I love it a lot!
Winning Eleven 6 FE ps2 is amazing game.
Beautiful stadiums, amazing and hard AI, great and addictive gameplay.

Also the toughest ML in my opinion.
You have 3 league divisions. You start with default team in division 3, and to play in division 2 you have to be in top 2 in division 3, then beat playoff teams from division 2, which is hard.

After that you go to division 2, have to be in top four, and then you play in division 1, and to win division 1 you have to beat the strongest teams from all top 5 European leagues, that is just extremely hard. And then you have Champions cup to win also.

Hello guys, fantastic thread!
One question: I'm a coach mode guy and I'm interested to know which PES has the best AI to mimic strikers like Ronaldo, Weah, Shevchenko, Collymore... And forwars(wings like C.Ronaldo or Ginola, able to start running with the ball at their feet from a distance and dribble past more opponents.
Let's immediately remove the garbage like PES 2018 to PES 2021!

I look forward to some interesting suggestions!

Hey mate.

I've never did coach mode, but will try to give you suggestions based on how the AI plays.

Undiscussed kings of CPU dribbling frequency are certainly Pes 12 and 13; given their rather separate nature from the rest of the saga in terms of physics and "enviroment", they are hate or love chapters, so as 360° titles you'll find mostly strong endorsements or harsh critics, however I can confidently say there are no other chapters in which AI dribbles so much and so consistently (some would say even too much perhaps). Of the "modern" titles PES 15 had CPU dribbling a lot as well, I'm not a fan for other reasons but you could give it a try.

Other good mentions are WE 2008 and Pes 2008 (both PS2 and the infamous PC edition, which I personally completely revalued) and Pes 2009 (can't say I played it too much lately, but it had very well characterized superstars). WE7/Pes 3 had a very smart CPU in possession (one of my favourites ever) that knew when to place a beautiful, natural dribbling, but it was more rare to see it take the ball in let's say the last 35 meters and start dribbling with the idea of a goal. I would make exactly the same point, word for word, for Pes 17. Pes 10 and 11 (the latter in particular) had very good sparkles of individual dribbling as well, but they fall more in the territory of those last above iirc.

As for the "historical" chapters past 3; Winning Eleven 8 Liveware Evolution had a good CPU in terms of indivduality and dribbling, but replaying it a bit lately the latter part is less marked than my memories suggested (maybe I should play it more to confirm it or not). We9 chapters unfortunately are super lacking in this (given how bad is AI in possession, I suspect while a masterpiece to play in first person it's probably one of the worse for coach mode, but I'll just leave it as a thought), WE 10 had a good AI (way better than Pes 6, which is kind of bland) and maybe you could give it a try too.

That said, again, I've never played coach mode so perhaps one of those I underestimated could surprise you ;)

Regarding the AI in classic PES games you can't go wrong by picking any between PES 3 - PES 2013 (WE included). Those classics in comparison to modern PES games (FOX engine games) they had superior AI positioning, variety in plays that can change the pace of the game, better contact creating injuries, and scenarios where you can have those unique 1v1 or 1v2 situations with explosive dribbling. PES 2013 even included a mechanic like player ID to differentiate players by individual animations when they were in specific situations. As for the modern versions, PES 2017 is the last game that had a decent and enjoyable AI overall...

I've noted that in a previous post thread , I'm currently playing j league dlc on we 2013 since a month I think and even almost every japanese player including second division have his own player id with different movement can you even imagine how detailed is that ?? we're talking about second division teams ..

Nice! Great work. They did some of the players badly there, Sato Hisato and Okubo Yoshito should have a bigger overall, heck they're not all time leading top scorers for nothing. Apart from that here's the (arguably) japanese goat. I remember him being the biggest LIAR in virtual football. In real life he was banging ~3 goals in a handful of games, which is normal, he's a veteran, but in J.League 2008 and 2009, he used to bang 20 to 27 goals, having a league top scorer season. I got curious, and so searched for some of his goals at the time, very few, but, in 2009 he had two goals, one in favor and the other was an own goal. While in the PS2 spin-off he was topping the charts.

hisato sato is a literal beast in this game , he is unstoppable.. , every game against sanfrecce hiroshima is a live nightmare !
His stats are low because he is so weak in the physical body attributes but he's so fast in terms of dribbling and scores so smartly last match he scored a hatrick against me and I think I saved the replays of the 3 goals he scored .. they're simply smart and beautiful goals, yoshito okubo is a very powerful striker in this game also and can score from any chance unlike sato who receives the through ball 90 percent of the chances are a goal , miura has his own not only movements and not only player id and not only celebration but he is a literal captain inside this game , he as a lot of high teamwork attributes and can play in weird positions like wing or midfield
I'm playing this hidden gem since I activated it a month ago and I'm still addicted to it playing it daily although I'm currently busy and can't visit this beautiful website that's why I replied to you late

Well the first thing to say is thank you very much for your detailed reply!!!
Much appreciated Madmac79 👍

I completely agree with you on PES 2012 and PES 2013!
I downloaded both, simmed a match between City and QPR and it was an absolute joy to see a player like Taarabt do his tricks, even in his own midfield! The diffrence between Silva and Wright-Phillips was ultra evident!
And I really enjoyed watching these games.
But here's the problem (because there is always a "but"...): I don't care about the current or recent seasons, I want to play (or coach) with teams from the '90.
And I didn't find any retro '90 season for PES 2012 and 2013... Only an historical retro one but I'm not into that.
Is there something related to these titles? Is it just me who hasn't found what I was looking for?

So I discovered that PES 6 has various retro '90 season mods.
I downloaded this great one by Vasovic https://evoweb.uk/threads/pes6-fifa-96-patch-95-96-finished-euro-version-version-latina.91387/
I think it has a modded gameplay because the matches are very fun to watch (or maybe 'cause I come from that utterly crap called PES 2021 :D ).
But even a "God Mode" stats Ronaldo hesitates to dribble past his opponents... Strikers do the "stop, pass backward and run forward" bs too much for my tastes.
Is there a gameplay editor or anything that can be used to edit the gameplay?

I'll take your suggestion about PES 5. I saw some '90 patches for it, time to take a look!

Just one last question about "Pes 2008 (both PS2 and the infamous PC edition, which I personally completely revalued)".
I think I din't play it when it was released but for everyone, the PC version is terrible.
May I ask why you have reevaluated it?

Thank you for getting back to me.
You're completely right, recent PES games are horrible compared to the old ones!
But as I said to Madmac, I want to play with a '90 season mod and apart the beautiful ISS97 created for PES 2021, I've seen some only for PES 5 and PES 6...

We10le has a better a.i too in comparision to pes6.
It keeps a better possesion on attack, while it is not enough clinical, and it is better at defending.

You are welcome! I remember we both love a CPU that dribbles from other Pes 21 threads 🙂

I think there should be some retro patch for Pes 2013 buried somehwere, unfortunately I have no idea where or if it was somehow complete. If it'll ever surface I'll make sure to tell you.

About Pes 5/WE9, perhaps I didn't express myself clearly😅, I think given the lacking CPU in possession on paper it should be one of the worse ones to play coach mode. But.. trying don't cost a thing 😉

Regarding PES 2008... I think it's fair, or at least logical, that it flopped when it came out. It was the first “next gen” title, EA was rolling out the revolutionary FIFA 2008, and PES, in addition to having no particularly striking new features (except for Team Vision AI, which was swallowed up in the disappointment of the rest of the game), was also poorly optimized... ugly to look at. Even I, at the time, despite glimpsing something vaguely good, was deeply disappointed.

I picked it up again out of curiosity a few years ago, with the Virtuared Patch and kitserver, therefore in high resolution/fully licensed, and with today's eyes... I was able to appreciate it. It's nice to look at, it has good inertia, it has the heart of the PS2 PES games, and Team Vision, which, in the two ML seasons I played (to be resumed sooner or later) buying only older players for challenge, gave me a lot of competitiveness and various intense, surprisingly good moments from the CPU. Perhaps it can't be stacked among the masterpieces, but pad in hand, in my humble opinion, it's certainly not the disaster that is painted every time it's discussed, quite the contrary.

Depending on what version of PES but since you're asking in the retro thread, players with the abilities of Dribble (They will attempt to keep the ball and dribble) and Tactical Dribble (they will attempt to keep the ball and dribble until they find a team mate who is in a good position)
Of course this doesn't mean they will do this every single time, it means they will favour it.

You are welcome! I remember we both love a CPU that dribbles from other Pes 21 threads 🙂
I found a way to make the AI to get past through various defenders but I never shared anything because it's necessary to "break" the game :BRICK:

Tested PES 5 in coach mode using the Legends V2 patch and I didn't see any particular differences compared to PES 6...
Ronaldo scored a goal by beating two defenders and made some interesting actions.
Not as much as I want to see by certain players but I think it's possible to get more with the right skills and tactics.
But you know what? Are coach mode matches in PES 5 and 6 sim? No, but they're damn' fun to watch!
The AI does everything you want to see in a football game and every goal is different, exactly like PES 2021...,,,,

Crystal clear. Shame there isn't any retro season for PES 2008 but I found one for WE10!
You suggested it to me thanks to the good AI, I have to try it!
