The Retro-PES Corner

I've already tried it. Your version should be the Fernando English Patch v3, since both versions have the same bugs.
So I think it will be difficult to find something perfect in English... we need of someone that roll up their sleeves and adapt that translation to the JL Asia
championship version.

Bug report: In your JLWE2008 version, players sometimes flicker/pop in and out on the screen. The issue disappears when switching back to the non-high LOD file. Additional note: I am using the PCSX2 emulator. Furthermore, your WE9LE high LOD file does not have this issue.
This is something I've experienced too but I thought it was because of the widescreen patch (they seem to pop in and pop out when they cross the "imaginary 4:3 border" if it makes sense). For now I just decided I'd play the game in 4:3, but I'm giving it a couple more tests when I can.

I didn't use the widescreen patch.

I'm curious how you play football in these games?

1. I mean, do you always act the same way in any version or team?
2. Do you use the same scheme, or do you choose something unusual every time?
3. Do you try to attack the AI with a certain pattern, a habit? For example, attack only with the flanks, and then cross?
4. Do you always play diversely?
5. Do you always sign the same players or “implement a different transfer policy”?
6. Do you use cunning tricks or feints?
7. Do you abuse long-range shots?

Do you experiment with any unusual ways of conducting the match in so many years of playing?

Is everything unchanged? :)

@inidlaM 3 , I mostly use the tactics of the team I pick.

The only time I'll apply my own schema is in ML where I usually go with 4-4-2.

GK
RB CB CB LB
DMF
CMF CMF
AMF
SS AV

Or

GK
RB CB CB LB
RMF CM CM LMF
SS AV

Regarding the transfer, it depends on the storyline I impose to myself. Ex. build a youth team, ... But in general I love to hire re-born players.

Hi all,

For the ones who played both PS2 PES/WE 2008 and PES 5, apart from the AI, is there any other aspect where you'd prefer PES/WE 2008 over PES 5 ?

I don't only mean from gameplay point of view, it can also be content related, ...

J.
Such a good question.

I honestly think that PES 2008 only has the upper hand in a few things:
- Better AI and better AI transfer intensity in ML,
- Better replay cameras but that is pretty subjective to be fair.
- Way more animations, especially for the keepers.
- Snow.

If PES 5 had the AI from the PES 2008, it would have been the definite game for me, but because the AI is so toothles, i just go for WE8LE instead of PES 5 because the AI is actually alright.

My main gripes with PES 2008 is:
- How the ball moves/sticks to the ground during passes, it is pretty hard to describe, but some of the passes are way way too slow. That started happening in PES 6 if i remember correctly.

- The posistioning of users AI defenders is questionable at times where they wont track a player running with the ball through the middle.
That could happen in older PES games, but way less than in 2008.

But that does seem like PES 6 issues converted to an another title.

Quick off topic lol

I really enjoy this thread, i have been reading it whole recently and i just gotta say it makes me so happy that there are so many people still talkting about these older games, especially when the modern gaming market is filled with soulles games, of course there are a few good ones, but they are getting more and more rare.

Some great replies already. A few things I’d add would be:

While the ball physics in general are greater in 5 and @TonyTornado makes a very valid point re passing, the dribbling in 2008 is better IMO than 5. Given we are controlling pro players (ML defaults aside 😉), PES5 is just slightly too loose. 2008 hits a sweet spot, as afterwards from 2009-2014, the dribbling is too close!

I also really like the added animations of goalkeepers in 2008 who pull off different styles of save depending on their ability - although bad keepers are very bad in 2008.

I play on a PS2 so I also enjoy having the crowd visible in 2008, whereas they keep leaving for a beer in 5.

I do feel WE9LE is a fraction better than 5, as is often mentioned on here, and may still pip 2008 to the gameplay title, even though I’m enjoying my love affair with the AI of 2008 😁.

Disclaimer: I hold the right to change my view depending on mood, day, weather etc!

But doesn't the ball bounce too much on the pitch in the older versions?

I could be wrong, but in those seasons the condition of the pitches (especially in Serie A) was terrible for the most part, so maybe PES 5 imitated the behaviour of the ball on a bad pitch?

And then, the pitches improved a lot after Euro 2008 or something, and so the developers reduced these bounces of the ball. Which is inherent in a good surface.

But the older versions of PES are charming with the players who played then...

It may depend on what people prefer to be fair, in the older titles the ball bounces a lot and i prefer it that way because to me the ball feels less on rails that way.

I like your explanation to why that might be lol, and i wouldnt be surprised if the devs wanted to overexaggerate the bounciness but i feel after PES 5, it was a change related to tweaked physics.

@TonyTornado , you've a point about AI own defenders. And also, I feel that playing anything above full manual player selection is wrong in PES / WE 2008 as it would result in your defenders opening the gates to opponent forwards.
i agree with the manual switching, thankfully i learned to play that way ages ago :)

I just dont get why its an issue that occurs way more often in that PES, im playing with a really low (but brave) rated players from second japanese divison in JLEAGUE2008, but i feel like i didnt had these problems that often in older titles like WE8LE (and i remember how much i struggled with the defaults at first lol).

I really like the keepers in 2008 :) Lots of great animations that fit in various situations, as a former amateur keeper, i always focus on them in PES.

Keepers in J.LEAGUE version are very amusing, most of them dont have keeper skills over 80 and they are not that tall, and because of that the saves they make look way more heroic :)

Here is a quick compilation of a few good saves from last few days that looked pretty authentic.

Btw, I've just started to create an OF for PES 5 on the same idea as my other OF's already released for other games :

- Locked / unlocked version
- No transfer or formation change
- No stats changes
- Real names for clubs, players, stadiums, leagues, ...
- Apply call names when available
- Apply preset faces when available
- More accurate kits incl. emblems, logos, ...

Interestingly, this looks like 2009 graphics (text, goals etc) and 2008 gameplay. Are you using the Billy Kong patch or another? I also really like this edition but similarly to Juventino, the allure of playing with national teams keeps me away from it.

Be interesting to hear your views too - clearly a connoisseur of the two great titles!

Im playing the BillyKong version upscaled to 1080 in PCSX2.
