The referee thread: discuss referees and their decisions

Think the ref got both reds (second yellows) right today.

Unlike Nani's challenge, Benteke's one was cautioned with a yellow, much like what should have been given to Nani as well...

Yea but what about the challenge though, similar?

Not to Nani's, no. But Ramires' and Benteke's second yellow cards were almost identical, so at least the ref showed some consistency.

Pathetic refereeing in Copa del Rey final...almost all 50-50 situations went on Atletico's side, referee has lost his cool in 2nd half with lots unnecessary cards, he sent off Mourinho for one complaint, after Simeone has been warned few times by 4th official and as a cream on the cake he sent off Atletico's player for 2 yellow cars, while he just had shown him his 1st

Ref had no idea what he was doing by the end.

To be fair to him, there was probably more actions in extra time that went against the rules than within them. Both teams trying every trick in the book - incredible lack of sportsmanship.

this refferee had a vengeance with Mourinho, do you remember the game against Sevilla, during the post-match conference, Mourinho wrote a list of the refferee's errors ..
well, the referee is the same of this final ..

whats about that hit by ronaldo to Atletico defender (don't know his name) ? that was not even near the ball tho , I think Ronaldo should be sent off way much before he was ;)

You gotta love that Mourinho send off  a minutes off the bench . No warning just the marching orders! the other coach was off the box all night :)

think Spanish FA sent Mourinho a clear message with that. "We don't want you here anymore!".

That was shocking. Simeonoe was running all over the place for the whole match, Mourinho once stepped out of his box and was gone.

I like to think the ref just had a vendetta rather than an agenda, but that was hilarious/terrifying.

The penalty that gave Porto the title.

It's definitely a pen. Look closely and you'll see the opponent touching his right foot, which results in Porto's player tripping.
Correct decision and absolutely necessary. The guy would've been through - doesn't even notice the guy behind him, to say he dived here is completely ridiculous.

Great call!

The ref in the Spurs match today gave Bale a yellow card when he should've given Bale a penalty.

Not that it mattered in the end, but Gunners was 0-0 at the time so maybe a Spurs goal could have stressed them enough to make them fail, you never know.

The contact was out of the area though?

Andre, to me it also looks as if there was a slight contact (out of the box), but Benfica lost it not there...they lost it in the match against Porto...

There's a contact Gerd, I can't deny that. However, as you said, it was out of the box. Oh, this should be a red card too, undoubtedly.

Tbh with you, Benfica missed on the title against my hometown and former club (I played football in their youth teams :P) Estoril Praia. People were already celebrating it even before the last 3 matches when Benfica had a 4pts gap and the Estoril game, which resulted in a draw (1-1) at Luz, ended in a complete meltdown.

In a nutshell, Porto deserved the title.

Oh yes, sorry. I was so focused on the contact I didn't even realize WHERE exactly it happened.
That is a shame then.

Now that the European season is over this thread is quiet, but there are atrocities going on elsewhere.

Let me just vent my frustration here watching Copa Libertadores (South America's equivalent to Champions League).
This thing has become another sport altogether. A dive/cheat fest, play stops every 10 seconds for any contact or dive, with incompetent (if not ill intentioned) refs totally spoiling the game.

2 or 3 weeks ago Corinthians had been surgically removed by the refs against Boca Juniors in a match that saw a blatant and intentional handball inside the box (YouTube - PÊNALTI NÃO MARCADO PARA O CORINTHIANS, CONTRA O BOCA: Veja o lance) and a disallowed goal that was onside.

Yesterday it was time for Fluminense to get the wrong end of the stick.
Full match highlights are here:

If you don't wanna waste time, jump straight to 0:55 (very debatable foul which gave Olimpia a first goal)

Then the blatant dive by the Olimpia player rewarded with a penalty (2:20)

And finally there was a real legitimate penalty denied to Fluminense in a tackle from behind which caught plenty of the player and nothing on the ball (unfortunately I couldn't find this video, it didn't make it to the highlights because absolutely nothing was given).

But just check those 'fouls' on Olimpia players, who went down too easy. Is it just me? Or football has gone all wrong in these parts of the world?

that is shit, diving is a cancer to football, i want players who dive banned for 27 games. ban the players and then they will stop, why no one has done this? but also i think football is wrong in most parts of the world not just south america.

Good work from the ref in the England v. Italy U21 match.

In the first half, he didn't give one of the clearest penalties you will ever see for Italy, and in the second he ruled out an England goal for a push, which after 3 replays I can't even identify who touched a single Italian player.

Two key decisions, two complete f*ck ups.

yeah what was that about? i was watching the game with some friends and none of us could tell why that goal was ruled out.... even the italian tv commentators were puzzled!

Italy definitely deserved to win, so justice was done, but no-one had any clue what the referee ruled. The cameramen kept showing a linesman talking into his mic - but that linesman was from the other end! One of the Italian players performed an almighty dive and arm wave, but he actually got taken out by one of his teammates.

As always, refs of course have no reason to tell coaches, the players or the public why they made their decision though. I loved how the ref couldn't even really point at which player had done the foul!

My working theory is he saw the flailing Italian and just assumed it was normal English rough-housing.

He was incredibly poor regardless, so many inconsistent and wrong decisions. You do wonder if the UEFA assessors sometimes just give up.

yeah, that was hilarious! :DD

questionable calls (or even plain wrong calls) occur quite often, but i've never seen a call for a foul that i couldn't even spot after the slow mo replay. i guess there's a first time for everything :P

More excellent refereeing in the Colombia v. Argentina match. Straight double red for the lightest of handbags between Higuain and Zapata.

I'd like to say the standard of refereeing has been so bad this season that it's turning people off the sport, but viewership is probably higher than ever. It is ruining it for me this year though. Just shocking inconsistency.

And more quality refereeing in the Norway v. England match: first a penalty for England which was never a pen, then my personal favourite - England surging forward with the ball, and the ref stops play because a Norwegian player has cramp. Cramp!

It's like refs don't even know the rules!

I Always support referees, but what strikes me now with all the hype around the Belgian national team is the way refs have changed too.
Until 2 years ago, every single time there was a 50/50 decision it Always went against our team, now it's the opposite.
In the 3 last matches (twice against Macedonia and once against Serbia) every single 50/50 decision was in favour of Belgium...
Most ref let themselves influence by the reputation of a team...i guess it's only human, but one should think that these international referees (the best in the world) would be above it...but they aren't.
It's the most difficult job in football, no doubt about it...

The quality French ref that f*cked up the England v Italy match has been given the Holland v. Russia match - and just gave a straight red to a Russian player for the most yellow-card challenge you'll ever see.

I don't care so much that refs make individual mistakes - that'll happen - but when the review boards watch a performance like this French ref put in on Wednesday, and then give him another match on Sunday - which he f*cks up again - it just makes me wonder if they care.

It's just not good enough for a 'professional'
