The PC Building Thread

Does the DS offer much over the DG?

Like I said, it will only be for headphones as my gpu passes 5.1 to my amp, in effect making my amp the soundcard.

Fair enough, if you don't feel confident doing it.

As I just would't buy a pre built one from a company as you will get crap spec for you mohonies.

Shame really because it's so easy to put a pc together and the results are very worthwhile and rewarding.

Your loss unfortunately. Current gen consoles are well behind what a half decent pc can do.

Saying consoles are well behind is being abit generous.

You only have to see BF3 on console to give yourself a bloddy good laugh, it is actually incredible just how bad BF3 is on console is compared to PC.

But Steel only really wants to play PES so it's abit of a big call to upgrade just for one game. Even though he would end up playing alot more games on PC if he was to purchase one.

Did you get round to buying a sound car Jamez?

Consoles are WAY behind PC Games. The only issue is that a lot of people wont want to spend up to £1000 to build a decent Gaming Rig when for a couple of Hundred Quid they can buy a console.

Gaming rigs don't cost £1000 though, that is a complete myth, I don't think mine even cost me £1000 and I have a £400 graphics card in mine.

You can easily build a decent PC for £600 even £500 if you want to be a wheeler dealer.

The consoles are cheap yes, but it isn't just gaming you use a PC for.

+ Mods alone make a PC well worth a purchase, you can't play DAYZ on a console or PES with all proper kits and players.

No thats true bsmaff. My PC build though with a £350 Graphics card came in at well over £800. Thats probably due to the Overclocked bundle that I bought from Scan as that was £400 odd quid alone! Then again that did come with the ASUS P8Z68, Intel Core i7 2600K @ 4.6GHZ, 16GB of DDR3 RAM 1600MHZ and a Dark Rock Pro Cooler.

Sounds like you have exactly the same setup as me I have P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3, 2600k with the same cooler and 16GB of ram. I have mine overclocked at 4.5 though, I could goto 4.8 and runs cool enough but don't want to damage the processor.

I think mine cost about £400-£500 for all that as well, but I bought my 2600k pretty much when the Sandybridge came out because of the massive difference in performance.

What's the cheapest I could buy all the parts to build my Mum a new PC? Her current one is about 9 years old and on the way out. I said to her rather than keep paying for it to be fixed it'd be better to buy a new one, and hopefully won't cost too much as I will build it for her.

She literally just uses it for internet browsing, iTunes, Microsoft Office work stuff and printing!

What temps do you get at Idle and full load lad?

£200-£250 if wanting a semi decent cheap one.

No mate, I was thinking about it after I posted. Not sure if I really need a sound card. My motherboard can do 7.1 out via S/PDIF so I should be able to hook my Turtle Beach headset up to that. I have the DSS unit which does the surround sound processing so the mobo only passes through the sound, it won't have to process anything.

I'll give it a try and report back. Not been on the PC much with the weather as it is.

I wanted to buy a pc and in the end became confident about building it.

But in the end the cost got higher. I was looking at nearly £700.00

Don't get wrong it would have been the nuts but also I wanted it on finance and the v12 finance on that aria site wanted £50 just to set the finance up - even though it would have been me setting it up online.

I only play pes. Nothing else. So laying out all that money just seemed a bit crazy.

My laptop however is shite and old so I'll be looking to get a new one soon so maybe pes on that?

For the while ill stick to 360

You won't regret getting a sound card.
The creative X-FI's are cheap on ebay now and give amazing sound quality.

The new creative Recon soundcards are meant to be amazing for headphones and gaming but shit for everything else.

Like I said, I don't think a dedicated sound card would be of any benefit to me.

My PC is hooked up to my amp - a decent Yamaha AV receiver - via HDMI, so my GPU sends the sound to my amp over HDMI and the amp does all the processing.

Similarly, my Turtle Beach headset has its own amp in effect, so hooking it up to the optical port on the motherboard should suffice.

Therefore I think a sound card would be redundant in my setup as I would be asking it to do any sound processing.

Something must be up with my setup. I get up to 40c Idle and up to 75c when at Full Load for a while.

My i5 2500k (@ stock speed, 3.7 in turbo) ides around 30-35, although it can be 25-30 in cooler weather. An hour with Prime 95 took it up to 58-61 across the four cores.

That's air cooled (Gelid Tranquillo).

Do you have any case fans?
I have noticed after I bought some decent ones my CPU ran cooler.

You also should think about underclocking your CPU down abit as the Intel recommended threshold is 70c.

Yeah I have a 2 case fans. One of them is supposed to keep the hard disks cool and the other one is an exhaust fan up near the CPU and the Cooler. Ive set the Profile for the fans in my BIOS to turbo to speed them up and try and keep the temps down...

Maybe Scan have done something wrong with the fitting of my CPU Cooler?

I have not tried my CPU at 4.8 to see what temps I get but will give it a go later and let you know what temps I get.

But you shouldn't have your CPU running above 70c if you strictly follow Intel guidelines.

Here you go:

I am not 100% sure what you need but if you already have case, HD and CD drive that will be a complete bonus.

Here is a really cheap CPU, Mem and Mobo which will do perfectly just for web browsing and general use.
The RAM is 4GB as there isn't any real price difference between 2GB and 4GB an extra £5 for much better performance.
The CPU is a good budget one and MOBO is a cheap one with onboard sound and graphics. Just don't try and play BF3 as it would look as bad as the console version.
